Study Of Peronospora Trifolioum Debary On Species Of Leguminosae, I. E. Melhus, M. K. Patel

The downy mildew, Peronospora trifoliorum deBy. of alfalfa, Medicago sativa L., is a widespread disease occurring in almost all countries of the world where alfalfa is grown. This disease assumes importance in the middle-west during wet seasons, particularly in the spring and fall. In Iowa it is most destructive on fall seedings and on the first cutting in the spring. The present studies were undertaken to throw light on the relation of moisture and temperature to spore germination and infection, the possible host range of the downy mildew, and its method of overwintering.

The variation in the method of oosphere behavior as well as the method of germination of the conidia in the Oomycetes has been a field fruitful of speculation as well as observation by mycologists. The members of this group are exceptionally susceptible to external conditions so that there is considerable diversity in reported observations and the interpretation which has been placed on them. There has also been considerable diversity of opinion as to the taxonomic value of some of the observed peculiarities.

This subject in order to be of real value must be an actual study of plants and animals. I have observed in my teaching that pupils, when given recognition characters of trees, may be able to pass a satisfactory examination on these characters, but fail to recognize the trees they describe when they see them in the field. They have simply memorized words that mean nothing to them.

Laboratory experiments in Density require the following apparatus: beam balances, meter sticks, graduates, calipers, tumblers, test tubes, and hydrometers. There should be as many of each as possible· in order to reduce the amount of group work. The objects for study should include pieces of lead, zinc, marble, paraffin, beeswax, glass stoppers, shot, gasoline and solutions of salts such as blue vitriol.

Considerable criticism has recently been directed against the commonly accepted methods of teaching Biology in our secondary school and colleges. John Burroughs once re- marked that he had never dissected an animal and was glad of it, implying by this, I take it, that we do not learn Nature by dissecting her children. Now that the seed corn is selected for next spring, and the frost has put an end to grasses and other outdoor crops, the agricultural instructor often feels that little outdoor material is available for further study. With this in mind I would like to present a laboratory exercise that will provide for some valuable outdoor work, and can be used as the basis for much classroom study as well.

Color photography by the screen-plate method belongs to the additive processes. The principle is based upon the fact that all color variations can be obtained by the mixing of the three primary colors - red, green and blue. It is not the purpose of this paper, however, to present a discussion of various screen-plates, but rather to show some of the results which may be obtained by the use of such media.

During the winter of 1920 and 1921 a count was made of the Baltimore oriole nests to be found in the trees within the city limits of Mount Pleasant as published in the proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science. A recount was made during February of 1927 for comparison with the first census taken six years earlier.

The utilization of such crop residues as wheat and oat straw presents a perplexing problem, especially to the grain farmer who would maintain the organic matter content of his soil. It has been generally observed that such materials added to the soil decrease the yields of the following crops.

Recent developments in soil science have called attention to the importance of studying and describing soils according to their profile characteristics. The various horizons or layers represented in each profile have certain definite and significant characteristics which may aid in the classification of the soils and may also have some effect on the fertility or crop producing power of the soil. The chemical and physical properties of the distinct horizons in typical soil profiles are being studied and some interesting data are being secured. Soil vita (soil life) is a preparation on the market for the inoculation of all crops. It is claimed that this culture "grows better and larger crops of all grains, vegetables, beautiful lawns and luxuriant flowers." The culture is supposed to contain all desirable soil organisms except the legume bacteria and the introduction of these organisms into the soil is supposed to bring about a great stimulation in the production of available plant food and hence in the yields of all crops.
