The Effect Of Lime On Nitrification In The Grundy Silt Loam, R. H. Walker, L. G. Thompson Jr.

To secure information preliminary to the laying out of field experiments for a study of the value of liming and growing inoculated legumes on the Grundy silt loam, an important soil type in Southern Iowa, tests have been conducted on this soil during the past winter in the greenhouse and laboratory. These tests were planned to study the effect of various amounts of limestone and to determine the influence of lime alone and in combination with certain fertilizers on crop yields and on the biological and chemical conditions in the soil.

The Status Of The Biological Sciences In The High Schools Of Iowa, C. W. Lantz

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

By means of a questionnaire a study has been made of the biological sciences in 130 high schools in Iowa. The relation of the biological sciences to the other high school sciences is considered, and information has been collected concerning methods of presentation, content of courses, objectives, and training of the teacher.

It is generally conceded now that microorganisms play a large part in the transformations through which various plant food constituents pass, in the soil. They are the agents which are chiefly responsible for the production of available plant food. They break down organic matter, liberating the plant food constituents contained therein. The products of this decomposition react with the complex mineral soil constituents and change them into soluble, available compounds. Certain microorganisms also have the ability of utilizing the free nitrogen of the atmosphere, fixing it in the soil, to serve later for the feeding of plants.

The Spontaneous Culture Method For Studying The Non-Symbiotic Nitrogen Fixing Bacteria Of The Soil, R. H. Walker, John L. Sullivan

During the years which have elapsed since the discovery of the non-symbiotic nitrogen-fixing bacteria there have been extensive investigations on the characteristics and activities of this group of organisms. They have been found to be of great importance from the fertility standpoint, adding appreciable amounts of nitrogen to the soil annually where the conditions are favorable for their development. In many cases too, a correlation has been found between the ability of a soil to support a vigorous Azotobacter growth and its crop producing power.

The work of many investigators has demonstrated the fact that nitrate nitrogen disappears from soils to which organic materials of a high carbon-nitrogen ratio have been added. Doryland in 1916 claimed that soils have a definite nitrate consuming power and that additions of organic matter such as straw, dextrose, or other soluble sugars stimulated the disappearance of the nitrates. He attributed this disappearance to the fact that the nitrates were assimilated by microorganisms but not lost from the soil.

The downy mildew, Peronospora trifoliorum deBy. of alfalfa, Medicago sativa L., is a widespread disease occurring in almost all countries of the world where alfalfa is grown. This disease assumes importance in the middle-west during wet seasons, particularly in the spring and fall. In Iowa it is most destructive on fall seedings and on the first cutting in the spring. The present studies were undertaken to throw light on the relation of moisture and temperature to spore germination and infection, the possible host range of the downy mildew, and its method of overwintering.

The variation in the method of oosphere behavior as well as the method of germination of the conidia in the Oomycetes has been a field fruitful of speculation as well as observation by mycologists. The members of this group are exceptionally susceptible to external conditions so that there is considerable diversity in reported observations and the interpretation which has been placed on them. There has also been considerable diversity of opinion as to the taxonomic value of some of the observed peculiarities.

This subject in order to be of real value must be an actual study of plants and animals. I have observed in my teaching that pupils, when given recognition characters of trees, may be able to pass a satisfactory examination on these characters, but fail to recognize the trees they describe when they see them in the field. They have simply memorized words that mean nothing to them.

Laboratory experiments in Density require the following apparatus: beam balances, meter sticks, graduates, calipers, tumblers, test tubes, and hydrometers. There should be as many of each as possible· in order to reduce the amount of group work. The objects for study should include pieces of lead, zinc, marble, paraffin, beeswax, glass stoppers, shot, gasoline and solutions of salts such as blue vitriol.
