Some Biological Effects Of Certain Nitrogen Fertilizers, P.E. Brown, F. H. Mendell

Numerous investigations in the past have shown that nitrogen fertilizers may exert a rather pronounced stimulative effect upon certain biological soil processes. The results of such a stimulation may prove distinctly beneficial to crop growth and the effects of the treatment may, therefore, be of economic significance.

A great deal of work has been done on the distribution of copper in plant and animal matter. It is not the intention of the authors to critically review all of the work of a biological nature concerning this element but only such as applies to the problem at hand. Investigations concerning the presence and role of copper in marine life are numerous. Harless found this metal in combination with protein in the blood of Eledone and Helix Pomatia and concluded that it functioned in a manner similar to that of hemoglobin of higher animals. It is hoped that this article may be but a start toward supplying definite records on what fish exist today in our Iowa streams. Our old records for the state are good, but we need recent records on which to base our ecological studies and to establish a sound program of conservation. Some neighboring states have been very active in ichthyological surveys, which have to a great extent made such work here seem less urgent. There are many reasons why colleges of agriculture should offer an unusually fertile field for scientific exploitation by the protozoologist. It seems to me that the situation is a reciprocal one. In the first place, the agricultural college and the field it serves stand to benefit by any contributions made toward a solution of the many problems relating to agriculture in which the protozoa play a greater or less part. For thirty-seven years we have noted with regret the gradual increase in the pollution of our river, in fact the increase has been quite rapid during recent years. During that time the inhabitants on the banks have increased three-fold while the amount of pollution that is put into the river has increased probably three-thousand-fold. A third of a century ago the Chlorine as Chlorides was three parts per million, the normal amount for unpolluted water in this region; now it is ten. In Iowa, practically all of the swamp land and many of the smaller lakes with which the early pioneers were familiar have been drained and there agricultural crops are grown. Whether the greatest economic benefit may be derived from appropriating for agricultural purposes such a small proportion of the land as lake beds represent, or by conserving and developing their natural resources is a subject for consideration. With one exception (that of Wall Lake in Wright County), Little Wall Lake is the only lake of any size within an area with radius of at least fifty miles, and in view …

We look for some other assemblage of letters to express our thoughts. And in selecting a title for this brief paper, we hesitated at "evolution," but as nothing else seemed so well fitted to meet the claims of our subject, the heading, as announced, was adhered to.

Notes Of Oxygen Consumption In Turtles Chrysmus Marginata Belli And Chelydra Serpentina Linn, Francis Marsh Baldwin

In an earlier paper read before the Academy, data were given on the comparative ratio of oxygen consumption in certain fishes and other marine forms. These figures were obtained by analysis of samples of water in which the animals had been kept, using the chemical method devised by Winkler. As is customary in such work, the figures of consumption were reduced to the volumetric basis at uniform pressure and temperature and were expressed in cubic centimeters per gram of body weight per hour. There resulted from these studies an interesting comparison in metabolic rate in the different fishes, being greatest …
