The concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is normally about 0.03 per cent but the soil atmosphere usually contains considerably more than this amount especially in the vicinity of roots of rapidly growing plants. The carbon dioxide produced by the plant roots and by microbiological action diffuses from the soil and increases the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere immediately surrounding the above-ground portions of the plant. It is this carbon dioxide from the soil which the plant utilizes in its growth and hence the significance of an adequate supply is at once apparent. The influence of carbon …

The pocket mouse, as near as we can determine, has not been reported as occurring within the state. The purpose of this report, therefore, is to give a description of the species Perognathus ftavescens obtained in Black Hawk County, Iowa, during the summer of 1936.

When viewed from the aspect of its relationship to other biological fields of either a pure or applied science nature or when taken only as associated with an avocational program, an understanding of the problems of classification of plants and animals is highly essential. Specialists in other fields of biology need not be expert taxonomists but the ability to readily handle some simple classification problems is very desirable and may spare one some awkward embarrassments. Since the afternoon of April 28, 1933, which I spent in collecting plants along the banks of Copperas Creek in Van Buren County, Malcolm McDonald and myself -working under the direction of Professor Charles Carter - have been doing the foundation work preparatory to the publication of a Flora of Southeastern Iowa. In the course of this work we have built up a herbarium, of more than three thousand specimens, which is now preserved in the Biology Department of Parsons College. The activities of microorganisms in the soil are affected by a large number of factors and one of the principal ones is the hydrogen ion concentration of the soil. The decomposition of organic matter may take place at a low pH as well as at a high pH; however, the type of organisms responsible for decomposition varies at different pH values and the rate and character of the decomposition may also change considerably.

The family Syrphidae constitutes one of the largest families of the order Diptera. The individuals are medium to large in size and may be bare, pilose, or covered with thick pile. Some species are metallic blue or green in color, while others are vividly marked with yellow bands, spots, or stripes on all parts of the body, but especially on the abdomen.

The Effects Of Mechanical Jarring Upon The Embryogeny Of Chick Embryos, Karl A. Stiles, Ray L. Watterson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The results of this study indicate that jarring at frequent intervals throughout the first day of incubation exerts a deleterious influence on the developing embryo. Only in one instance did an egg jarred from the fourth to the twelfth hour of incubation develop normally and hatch. Sixty per cent of the embryos thus jarred died sometime between the second and third day of incubation. The others ceased to develop between the third and eleventh day of incubation.

Unsporulated oocysts of Eimeria nieschulzi, E. miyairii, and E. separata were taken from the caeca of albino rats which had pure infections; unsporulated cocysts of E. tenella were secured from the caeca of experimentally infected chicks; unsporulated oocysts of E. arloingi, E. faurei, and E. ninakohl-yakimovi were obtained from fresh fecal droppings of young goats. They were concentrated by flotation in sugar solution and submitted to different temperatures (ranged 46° C. - 56° C.) and at various length of exposures in an electrically controlled water bath. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the value of abandoned gravel pits in Iowa for the propagation of bluegill, Helioperca machrochira, and black crappie, Pomoxis spariodes. These observations were made at the Lake View fisheries station, located in Sac County. This area formerly constituted a series of thirty pits varying in size from a fraction of an acre to five acres. Several years ago the Iowa Fisheries Division stocked a number of fishes in one of the pools to ascertain their value for fish production. An outgrowth of the method used by A. V. Hill to determine the next liberation accompanying the passage of a nerve impulse has resulted in the development of an apparatus by which the osmotic pressure of as small quantities of fluid as .5 cu. mm. may be determined to an accuracy of .1 per cent NaCl. The principle consists essentially in the differential cooling effect produced between the experimental sample and a standard solution when placed in a standard, constant temperature, constant humidity environment. As indicated in Table I, a preliminary meeting looking toward the organization of an academy of science in Iowa was held in Iowa City in 1875. According to the records three professors and four doctors were present at the meeting. Two of the professors were from Ames and one from Iowa City, while Ames, Iowa City, Davenport and Des Moines were represented by the four medical men. Five other persons, two of whom were in academic work and three in medical practice, stationed at Iowa City, Tabor, Clinton, Davenport and Dubuque, respectively, had previously expressed their approval of the proposed …

For some ten years the Iowa Insect Survey has been collecting specimens and data from all parts of this state in a study of the geographic and seasonal distribution of the insects of Iowa. Comparatively little has been done heretofore with most of the families of the Hymenoptera and the Diptera of Iowa. With the hope of stimulating a more general interest in these groups, preliminary lists of the species now known to occur within the state are being submitted. Magnetic Velocity Analysis Of Potassium Atoms Scattered By A Magnesium Oxide Crystal, Alexander Ellett, Victor W. Cohen

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A beam of neutral potassium atoms is directed to the surface of an MgO crystal, incident at an adjustable angle of from 20 to 80 degrees. Perpendicular to this beam is a slit system which defines a second beam of atoms which have been scattered by the crystal. This second beam is directed to the region between a pair of Stern-Gerlach magnet pole pieces. The intensity of the beam is measured by means of a Langmuir-Taylor surface ionization detector.

A study was made comparing the fauna and flora of a southeastern Iowa pond during the years 1933 to 1935, inclusive; that is during a complete cycle from conditions of abundance of rain and ground water to a very arid condition of drouth and then back again. With this was combined a study of the development and change in fauna during the period from March to June, 1935.

Rare And Unusual Plants From South Eastern Iowa, Charles Gilly, Malcolm Mcdonald

In 1922 Professor Charles Carter, of Parsons College, and the late Dr. L. H. Pammel, of Ames, began a botanical survey of south-eastern Iowa. During the years following, collections were made and the specimens sent to the herbarium of Iowa State College, where the headquarters of the survey had been established. After Dr. Parnmel's death in 1931 the project was abandoned; but in April, 1933 Professor Carter revived it and the authors began the collection of specimens for a Parsons College Herbarium. In the past three years they have collected and identified about 800 species of plants. The greatest portion …
