Data upon the first four instars of Thermobia domestica (Packard) appeared in a previous paper (Adams, 1933b). The rapid growth of the sensory appendages was emphasized. Nothing was written, however, about the duration of these early instars or the variations to be found in the dimensions of individuals within a given instar.

The work performed in this laboratory and elsewhere during the past fifteen years has shown conclusively that a diet adequate for growth may not necessarily fulfill the requirements for lactation. The excellent work of Evans and Bishop (1) has conclusively demonstrated that a specific vitamin is required for reproduction. The fact that lactation is not normal on many synthetic and even natural diets suggests the possibility that all of the factors necessary for normal development are not known. Diagnosing The Phosphorus Needs Of Soils By Biological Methods, F. B. Smith, P. E. Brown, H. C. Millar

It is a well-known fact that the total phosphorus content of a soil is not a measure of the amount of available phosphorous. Some soils that contain a low total phosphorus content may be supplied with sufficient available phosphorus for present crop needs. On the other hand, some soils that contain a relatively high total phosphorus content may be deficient in available phosphorus.

Considerable work has been done in this laboratory on the reactions of chlorine derivatives of nitrogen compounds, particularly nitrogen trichloride, monochloroamine, monobromoamine, dibromoamine, and the alkylchloroamines.

The first list of Iowa Orthoptera was entitled "A Preliminary Catalogue of the Orthoptera of Iowa." This was published by C. E. Bessey in the Seventh Biennial Report of the Iowa State College in 1877. The list included about forty species.

The Reaction Of Potassium Amide In Liquid Ammonia With Diarylbromethenes, George H. Coleman, William H. Host

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The behavior of certain diarylchloroethenes with potassium amide in liquid ammonia has been reported previously. A rapid reaction occurs and the ethenes are changed with the loss of hydrochloric acid to tolanes. Thus 1, 1-di-p-tolyl-2-chloroethene forms p. p'-dimethyltolane. A series of such para substituted compounds was studied and as anticipated only symmetrical tolanes were obtained.

Hydroxyfurans, particularly the mono- and di-β-substituted types (prepared from furans and by ring closure procedures) have been examined biologically, particularly for their growth stimulation effects on bacteria, yeasts and various higher plants. A discussion is included of the synthetic procedures and the proof of structure of the variously substituted hydroxyfurans.

Heavy Water Obtained By The Combustion Of Dried Biological Specimens, H. L. Keil, A. W. Ralston, M. T. Kelley, W. E. Catlin, W. H. Jennings, J. Straley, H. Gilman

Dry, finely divided plant and animal tissues were oxidized by passage over hot copper oxide; the aqueous condensates were first distilled from potassium permanganate and then alone. If necessary, oxidation and distillation were repeated until there was no significant change in density. Densities were determined by a modification of the submerged magnetic float procedure, and the accuracy was one part per million. The specimens examined were practically all of the chief organs of cattle; yeasts; dairy products; and some parts of plants like corn and melons. The study is being extended to other biological specimens, normal and pathological.

In the Iowa 25-Year Conservation program a series of artificial lakes were planned for Southern Iowa. On August 26, 1932, the Betz Construction Company of Sioux City, was awarded the contract by the Iowa Fish and Game to build the dam for the first lake under the supervision of the Brown Engineering Company of Ottumwa. All other dams have been built by the State Board of Conservation and the Fish and Game Commission, with the aid of Federal agencies.

Some Embryonic Abnormalities Caused By X-Rays, Titus C. Evans

In the course of an investigation of the effects of X-Rays on embryonic development of Melanoplus differentialis, it was noticed that abnormalities appeared in some of the individuals. More eggs were rayed, dosages comparable to those given the embryos in which abnormalities appeared, and the following observations have been made. (1) There was a critical stage for the production of abnormalities. Eggs rayed when the embryos were extremely young usually resulted in only deficiencies of various degrees. Eggs rayed when the embryos were just a few days older resulted in embryos exhibiting many abnormalities. Still older embryos produced no abnormalities …
