Wet Thermojunctions For Measuring Relative Humidity, L. A. Richards

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Using wet and dry thermojunctions instead of wet and dry thermometers for measuring relative humidity is a rather obvious variation in experimental procedure. A. V. Hill (4) used thermopiles of fifty junctions for this kind of measurement but his sensitive elements were slow in response because of large thermal capacity and large thermal conduction between junctions. Lanning (2) and later Woodrow (3) successfully used single copper-constantan thermocouples for measuring relative humidity in restricted space. Bal des (1) and McCracken (7) have used thermocouples for measuring osmotic pressure by wetting one junction with the solution to be tested and placing the …

A Gas-Type X-Ray Tube, L. E. Pinney

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The tube is, in general, of the Wyckoff type but the design has been re-worked for the purpose of better adaptation to the particular problem in hand. Simplification of machine work and utilization of standard parts have also received attention. The tube is being used by John W. Gowen for irradiating biological materials.

A Survey Course In The Biological Sciences, C. W. Lantz

A review of a Survey course in the biological sciences which is being given at Iowa State Teachers College. It is a course extending over a period of twelve weeks, meeting five times a week including two double periods. The following five points are considered: (1) objectives of the course, (2) the major units, (3) methods of presentation, (4) some results obtained, (5) criticism of the course by the students.

Hygroscopicity As A Factor In The Thermal Conductivity Of Loose-Fill Insulators, H. Stiles, H. E. Ruff

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

There has been constructed a thermal conductivity apparatus of the guarded hot plate type employing a compensatory heating unit and designed to test samples having low values of thermal conductivity. Tests on various types of loose-fill thermal insula· tors reveal that there is a linear increase of thermal conductivity with increased moisture content. Depending upon the particular type of sample under consideration, a hygroscopicity of 20 to 30 per cent by weight completely vitiates the efficacy of loose-fill jnsulation.

Several years ago while teaching in the high school at Grinnell, Iowa, I found the "Grinnell Flora" and "Our Trees" by Prof. Conard very useful devices for teaching and particularly for motivating an interest in outdoor life. After moving to Davenport, with only a forty-five minute class period, and an impossible walking distance from desirable spring flora, one choice for the out-of-door study was the trees. Since students like field studies and the trees demand to make themselves known in the spring, I set to work to construct a guide to the common native and cultivated trees of our locality. …

The Dolichopidae are small flies not exceeding eight millimeters in length, and are almost always bright metallic green or blue in color. The adults are found especially ahundant on plants around sand and mud, as well as on rocks and plants in the water. They are predaceous flies living on small, soft bodied insects. The genera Laxina, Condylostylus and Sciapus may be found on leaves of shaded flowers in search of food. These flies may be readily distinguished from the members of other families by the absence of a cross vein between the discal and the second basal cell, these …

The family of Diptera known as Tetanoceridae or Marsh Flies includes medium-sized flies, most species of which may be readily recognized by the shape of the head. It is fully as broad as the thorax, quite short, and has a "retreating chin" which gives a characteristic profile. The adults frequent ponds, streams, marshes, and other moist places. The larvae are aquatic. The family is a small one and but remotely economic. The Iowa Insect Survey has been giving especial attention to this family for several seasons. Progress Report On A Survey Of The Spiders Of Iowa, Karl A. Stiles, Beulah Detwiler

The senior author began a study of Iowa spiders in the fall of 1936 when a black widow (Latrodectus mactaus texanus) was collected in Linn County. This was reported in Science (Stiles, 1937) and constituted the first official record of the black widow for Iowa. This record was of special interest because Minnesota and Iowa had been listed as the only states from which this spider had not been reported officially. It was discovered at that time that the spider was one of Iowa's most neglected animals. Only three papers on our spider fauna have been reported to the Iowa …

A study of the content and rate of decomposition of organic matter in soils is of considerable practical importance. The benefits derived from a supply of rapidly decaying organic matter in the soil include increased microbial activity, greater availability of nitrogen and other plant food constituents and the maintenance of good tilth in the soil and hence better crop yields. Under continuous cropping, as with corn, the rate of decomposition is fairly rapid and the content of organic matter drops to a low level unless regular additions are made. Most of our agricultural plants contain from 10-20 per cent of a complex material, called "lignin." It is generally accepted that the rigidity of plant stems is due to this lignin which is found in the walls of the xylem cells. Thus, all of the plant residues added to soils contain an appreciable quantity of lignin. The exact chemical structure of this complex is as yet undetermined. In fact, it is even doubtful whether we can ever obtain one chemical formula which can be said to represent lignin. For the soils worker, however, the importance of lignin lies in the …

It is well known that Nymphaea mexicana Zucc. and Nymphoides aquaticum (Walt.) produce brood bodies, hibernating bodies or organs of vegetative propagation. In both species the bodies consist of a cluster of fleshy roots more or less resembling a "hand" or a small bunch of bananas.
