The Time Of Embryonic Determination Of Sensoria And Antennal Color, And Their Relation To The Determination Of Wings, Ocelli And Wing Muscles In Aphids, Karl A. Stiles

Intermediate-winged aphids of the species Macrosiphum solanifolii were studied in an effort to determine the time of embryonic segregation of the sensoria and antennal color, and their relation to the determination of wings, ocelli, and wing muscle. Dark antennal color and increased sensoria of winged aphids are considered to be characters closely correlated in development; for in general, when there was a darkening of antennae, there was a corresponding increase in the number of sensoria. In practically all cases increased sensoria were correlated with a relatively large amount of nondegenerate wing muscle. It is concluded that embryonic determination of dark …

The cultivation of lupines has been practiced in Europe for over a thousand years. Impoverished Greeks and Romans used lupine meal in their bread and farmers have long grown the plants for forage and green manure. Extensive cultivation of these plants would be expected because the seed, which consists of from 30 to 40 per cent protein, is high in food value and because relatively high yields can be obtained even under unfavorable conditions. Stock poisoning, however, has frequently resulted from consumption of these plants owing to the presence of harmful alkaloids. Such substances could be removed from the seeds, …

It is intended rather as a brief resume of certain problems that have been studied, at least in part, by the Dairy Industry Section of the Iowa Agricultural Experiment Station. Ammonoids are among the best of index fossils and are particularly useful for intercontinental correlations. Five major ammonoid zones are recognized in the Permian, all of which are of world-wide significance. In Texas and northern Mexico the Permian is particularly well developed and is abundantly fossiliferous, and the section in this area serves well as a standard for the rest of the world.

Science teachers generally consider teaching the scientific method as one of their chief objectives in a general course. But too often after setting up this objective they leave it. The most widely used textbook of zoology in the Midwest is Hegner's General Zoology and yet there is not one word in this popular text on the scientific method. Two of the newest texts of zoology are Textbook of Zoology by Potter, and Animals without Backbones by Buchsbaum. These books have received much favorable comment yet Buchsbaum's does not contain one word about the scientific method and Potter's devotes about one …

Influence On Oocyst Production Of Concentration And Kind Of Yeast In Rations Of Rats Infected With Eimeria Nieschulzi, Philip C. Waters

Previous investigators have shown that a liberal supplement of yeast induces higher production of oocysts during an immunizing infection with Eimeria nieschulzi than either certain other supplements or complete lack of supplement. The question arises, however, whether lesser amounts of yeast would result in lower oocyst yields, and conversely, greater amounts in higher yields. Furthermore, because of the seeming association of the substance that produced the conditions requisite for higher oocyst counts with vitamin G, and sometimes B also, it was evident that a study with two strains of yeast differing in comparative content of vitamins B and G would …

The incubation period of birds varies from approximately two to four weeks with three rather well defined periods known; namely, two, three and four weeks. Some of the factors suggested by others responsible for this variation include size of egg, condition of young at the time of hatching, temperature, etc. An evaluation of these factors will be discussed. A study of the histology of the digestive tract of an English Sparrow at the time of hatching (14 days) was carefully compared with the digestive tract of a chick incubated for the same length of time. In a survey of 150 Western Painted turtles (Chrysemys marginata bellii) 56 per cent were found to be infected with one or more species of coccidia. Species found were: Eimeria chrysemydis n. sp. Incidence: 34 % Oocysts oval, 23µ x 15µ; differs from E. delagei in that the granular mass does not form a crescent and vacuole, in that there is no definite arrangement of sporocysts, and in host and geographical distribution. Eimeria delagei var. marginata n. var. Incidence 6.7 per cent. Differs from E. delagei in that segmentation does not result in five equal spheres and in that there …

A case of symphalangy has been traced through six generations. In the course of six generations, seventeen out of nineteen individuals are affected with this trait. In all individuals, with the exception of one young woman, the fifth finger is bent mesially to a very marked degree at the junction of the middle and distal phalanges. In this exceptional case there is no ankylosis in any of the joints of the index finger of the right hand. Symphalangy is symmetrical in all other members of the family.

Euglena rubra is one of the species of Euglena in which a color change from green to red may be produced in a few minutes by the migration of pigment granules from central to peripheral positions. The purpose of the present study was to determine the color of light most effective for bringing about this change. Light sources used were direct sunlight and a 500 watt lamp. The organisms were placed between a glass slide and coverslip, and the color change was observed macrosopically and microscopically.
