Preliminary Studies Of The Physiology And Morphology Of The Germinating Foliar Embryos Of Bryophyllum Calycinum, James H. Craft

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A critical review of the literature pertaining to the germination and growth of the foliar embryos of Bryophyllum calycinum, Salish., has revealed that in most cases the influence of certain physiological and environmental factors upon these structures was not carefully considered. For instance, the history of the plants prior to the experimental period was not fully elucidated and, in absence of statements to the contrary, must have been largely ignored. Yet the work of Dunn (1937) indicates that the influence of "hardening" treatments may extend over as many as three following generations in this species. A common experimental error …

Within easy reach of practically all colleges and high schools of Iowa and all prairie states there is a wealth of little used biological material for botany and other biological courses. This situation is especially true with respect to the simpler plants as the algae, fungi, lichens, hepatics, or liverworts, mosses, the ferns, and the fern allies. For this neighborhood growing material, commonly if not generally, there is substituted preserved material from the laboratory shelf and bearing the label of some company foreign to the state.

Mona Van Duyn graduated from Iowa State Teachers College (ISTC) in 1942 with three majors: English, Speech, and French. More importantly, she began to take herself seriously as a poet at ISTC. She often made the three-mile walk west of Cedar Falls to visit poet James Hearst. After college, and a Master's Degree from the University of Iowa, Van Duyn went on to teach at the University of Louisville, and Washington University in St. Louis. She has won every major U.S. poetry prize, including the National Book Award and the Pulitzer. UNI awarded her an Honorary Doctor of Literature Degree …

The Measurement Of Visual Phenomena By Means Of The Electroretinogram, Theodore Louis Jahn

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Whenever light strikes the eye of an animal there is a voltage difference produced between the front and back of the eye. This voltage difference originates in the retina of the vertebrate eye and in the sense cells of the compound eye. A record of the voltage change may be obtained by means of an oscillograph and is referred to as an electroretinogram (ERG). The electroretinogram may be used for the study of various visual phenomena.

In undertaking a discussion of biology in education it is highly desirable to view the subject against the general background of American education as a whole. Among the nations of the world, the United States possesses the unique distinction of having mass education. We owe this policy to the shrewd foresight of the fathers of the American Revolution, to their recognition of the fact that the success of representative government depends upon an enlightened electorate. Discussions of the meaning of intelligence frequently begin with attempts to separate heredity from environment, or nature from nurture. Such studies can be carried out only in a population in which control can be exercised over the two sets of factors. The control of hereditary factors increases as we go from unrelated children to siblings to twins. When we think of the individual child, we must recognize at once that he is a product of nature and nurture. It is not feasible to assume either that the human organism can develop independently of its genetic basis or that any set …
