Apparatus For Distilling Alcohol From Biological Fluids And A Calculator For Harger Titrations, T. U. Marron, C. S. Banwarth

For the determination of alcohol in body fluids the Harger (1935) titration is extensively used with distillates obtained in various ways; e.g., by steam distillation, desiccation, distillation from picric acid, picrate-tartrate or tungstic acid. Gibson (1939) has combined it with the simple distillation from picric acid solution (Nicloux, et al. 1934) to produce an essentially satisfactory and rapid determination. Clinical simplicity with research accuracy has been achieved by the use of a specially designed distillation apparatus with the method (Johnston and Gibson, 1940). A recent analysis of the nine most recent textbooks on the Psychology of Religion revealed a dearth of the commonly accepted findings in the field of psychology. Early authors omit topics of personality, mental health, personal religion, and religious expression. Childhood and adolescence were discussed in a minor way. Much emphasis was given to mysticism, immortality, primitive religions, prayer and other topics of considerable interest to theologians. The needs and interests of children, adolescents, and adults are readily recognized as basic to any adapted psychology of religion. Likewise, ideals, character values, methods of influencing youth, etc., should be rated as …

Perhaps the clearest definition of thinking in a field of study as the preferable educational approach is to recall Hazlitt's essay "On the Ignorance of the Learned" where he says, "If we wish to know the force of human genius we should read Shakespeare. If we wish to see the insignificance of human learning, we may study his commentators." Strong words, but they bring out the point. If not, think in terms of pure text-book learning.

The relatively clear and simple developmental pattern of the frog gonad (Witschi 1914, 1924, 1929) makes it a good basic type with which to compare the sex glands of higher vertebrates. The origin and development of the elements of the sex glands of higher vertebrates, especially mammals, are not as clear as in amphibia.

The Mouth Parts Of The Firebrat Thermobia Domestica (Packard), (Thysanura), Roberta O'Harra, J. Alfred Adams

The purpose of this paper is to present detailed drawings of the external form of the mouth parts of the adult firebrat, as a representative lepismatid. That the Lepismatidae, or silverfish insects, are of great significance in insect morphology, is well known to students of the subject. In certain respects they are the principle morphological link between the Apterygota and the Pterygota. While any of the widely distributed, domestic species of Lepisma or Ctenolepisma might well be used for morphological study, the firebrat, Thermobia domestica, is the species which seems to us the most likely to be practical for use …

The physiological properties of rotenone have been extensively studied by Van Hasselt (1), Haag (2), and many others¹. The history, distribution, and chemical properties of the alkaloid, which has been isolated as a white crystalline material (Greshoff, 5), are adequately reviewed by Leonard (4) and also by Van Hasselt and Haag. Rotenone first attracted scientific attention when it was found that preparations of powdered derris root had excellent insecticidal properties. Subsequent experiments were devised to test its action on various vertebrate animals, in order to make certain that the lethal concentration for insects would not be deleterious to …

Vivid word pictures of personalities have ever been portrayed in biographies and character studies. But until the present half century, no standards had been established for analyses, evaluations or comparisons. Bases for present endeavors in those lines were laid in the nineties by pioneers in general psychology. Progress was accelerated by the maturation of methods of mental measurement from 1908 to 1927. Since the latter date, research men in personality have advanced largely by means of methods developed within their own field. Present tentative standards come from the following sources: (I) Imitations of proved methods of mental measurement. (2) Fulcra, …

Relation Of The Structure Of Sugars To Their Dissimilation In The Butyl-Acetonic Fermentation, James F. Guymon, L. A. Underkofler, Ellis I. Fulmer

The dissimilation of starch in corn mash by Clostridium acetobutylicum produces butanol, acetone and ethanol, commonly called "solvents"', in the approximate ratio of 60:80:10, respectively. Although corn mash is the usual substrate, fermentations of certain pure carbohydrates by Cl. acetobutylicum have been investigated previously to some extent. The studies of various workers (3, 4, 5, 6, 9, 10, 11, 12) have shown that a considerable number of sugars are fermented by the butyl organism in semi-synthetic media. The sugar fermentations are somewhat slower than for corn mash, and the final acidities arc somewhat higher with yields of neutral products correspondingly …

This paper is a continuation of a series of winter bird lists of Sioux City and the surrounding territory. The series was started by T. C. Stephens in 1916. Dr. Stephens covered the six winters from 1916 to 1922 in four papers¹. Charles J. Spiker wrote a paper listing the records of the four winters from 1922 to 1926²; William Youngworth, the four winters from 1926 to 1930³; and Wilfred D. Crabb, the eight winters from 1930 to 1938⁴. Advances in human genetics are taking place on several fronts; and despite the diversity of attacks on the problems involved, the author of this paper will limit himself to a few areas in which he and his students have either done some research or have a special interest. Every year some advances are being made in our knowledge of the inheritance of physical traits and an attempt will be made to briefly indicate some of the achievements and problems encountered in this field of study. The writer has been making a number of studies of the inheritance of physical traits.

One of the problems commonly encountered in the preparation of tissue for histological studies is the tendency for it to become excessively hardened before sectioning with a rotary microtome. The purpose of the investigation was to discover by as objective a means as possible not only the hardening effects of various agents on tissues, but also the influence of the time element. The approach to this problem has been to test the hardness of the tissue with a standard penetration needle after each step in the various techniques used.

Further Studies In The Technique Of Evaluating Biological Background (Abstract), Richard Schweet

A six-category test of biological background, consisting of terms, names of men, etc., was constructed. Three alternate forms, marked by the same key and of equal difficulty, according to an item analysis, were made. Correlation of odd and even items gave reliability coefficients of + .88 and + .90. Statistical analysis of 500 tests of college and high school students in the state showed significant differences, by analysis of variance, among the following groups: graduate students, juniors and seniors, freshmen and sophomores, and high school students. Norms are given for these groups. No significant differences were found among different comparable …

The big-headed flies, as these small insects are commonly called, are easily recognized by their very large, almost spherical head. They are small black flies four to five mm. long with wings two to three mm. longer than the abdomen. The basal cells are elongate; the anal cell reaches almost to the wing margin and is rarely incomplete. The apical cell is narrowed at the tip, but is never closed. There are three posterior cells with complete veination in all the genera except Chalarus Walker.

Selective or assortative mating has been discussed under the term "homogamy," which has been defined by Harris (3) as "the mating of physically or psychically similar individuals." The phenomenon has been observed in the plant kingdom [see D. F. Jones (5) J and in several phyla of the animal kingdom, including Protozoa and Chordata. Willoughby and Pomerat (9) have reviewed homogamy with respect to physical characters, and the evidence for influence of psychic factors in mate selection has been summarized by H. E. Normally, the process of mitosis is an orderly, integrated series of events, that is, karyokinesis and cytokinesis are usually linked together and function as one continuous process. Occasionally, however, either one or both of these processes may be interfered with in some way so that a dissociation takes place between the two. This gives rise to an abnormal situation so that each process may proceed independently of the other or one may be inhibited while the other goes on uninterrupted. The most common abnormal condition of this type is the inhibition of cell cleavage while nuclear division continues, resulting in …
