The Cooperative Committee on Science Teaching published a very interesting report entitled "The Preparation of High School Science Teachers." This report pointed out that many of the science teachers in America are inadequately prepared for their jobs. The writer has long felt that that was particularly true of the Iowa science teachers. He has also been disturbed by the fact that our state requirements for certification of teachers were such that one .could teach high school biology with only five semester hours of college credit. Ground Beetles, as this Coleopterous family is called, are for the most part terrestrial and hide in almost every conceivable place. They are particularly abundant under stones and objects on the ground and wherever other small invertebrates are found. Practically all of them are carnivorous and mostly nocturnal in habits. Many species are attracted to lights, and may be easily collected at night or by the use of light traps. The Carabids are predacious on worms, snails, caterpillars, grubs, maggots, and in fact almost any living animal that they can overcome. Recent observations indicate that, on two occasions at least, two species of wild flies came into houses and acted like species we regard as house flies. The two species are: Cochliomyia americana Cushing and Patton and Ceratoxys latiuscula (Loew), which will be discussed in the order above. Cochliomyia americana, the screw-worm fly, a Calliphorid, is usually a wild elusive, swift-flying, out-of-door creature, occasionally attacking man, but more frequently ovipositing in the wounds of domestic animals. Studies On Iowa Spiders, Karl A. Stiles, Doris Helen Luber

The spiders reported in this paper were collected by Professor H. E. Jaques and his students in the summer of 1940. From this collection twenty-five species and fifteen genera representing seven different families have been determined. Of the one hundred and twenty-eight 'individuals reported, there are sixty-three males, sixty-three females, and two immature. These spiders came from twenty-nine counties; their geographical distribution is indicated in Plate 1. All determinations were checked by W. J. Gertsch of the American Museum of Natural History, New York City, and it is a pleasure for the authors to acknowledge their appreciation of Dr. Gertsch's …

The Selection Of Prairie Areas In Iowa Which Should Be Preserved, Ada Hayden

In 1933, the Iowa Board of Conservation and the Iowa Fish and Game Commission now known as the Iowa State Conservation Commission prepared a report known as the Iowa Twenty-Five Year Conservation Plan. It was designated as a program for the judicious use of Iowa's natural resources. In the section of the Twenty-Five Year Plan listing and describing Scientific Preserves one type is recommended which had not been included previously. It is the Prairie Preserve.

A Thirty Year's Phenological Record Of The Spring Flowering Plants Of Henry County, H. E. Jaques, Doris Hilleary

Each spring since 1915 a record has been kept of the date of appearance of the first fully opened flowers of our seed bearing plants found in Henry County. The spring of 1944 completed the thirtieth year of this record. The record is the result of a Spring Flower Contest among the students of the botany classes at Iowa Wesleyan College. The competition is usually keen, (Jaques, 1931), so although we are not insured that the very first plant in bloom was recorded, we do have one of the earliest. The IOWAVE [newspaper]

The IOWAVE was a newspaper focused on the activities of the WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service) who were being trained at the Naval Training School temporarily located on the campus of Iowa State Teachers College (later the University of Northern Iowa). The IOWAVE newspaper includes many articles regarding the day-to-day life of the WAVES trainees, as well as articles chronicling the ongoing progress of the war effort.

The pre-war developments in the growing, harvesting, and marketing of corn in the United States necessitated a carry-over of large corn surpluses from one year to the next as a means of price and supply stabilization. Iowa, alone, had a carry-over of corn greater than all the other corn producing states together. Much of this corn was government owned and stored in large quantities in shelled form for indefinite periods in elevators and specially constructed steel bins. The unprecedented nature of this venture and the likelihood of its return prompted an evaluation of the problems in corn deterioration. The present …

In speaking to you as a representative from the Mathematical Section of the Academy, I have a feeling of hesitance which is quite usual among mathematicians when they address a mixed or non-mathematical group of scientific men and women. It is a well established tradition that scientists may complacently separate themselves from mathematics and it is equally true that mathematicians are timid about discussing their work with scientists outside their own circle. Many of the vitamins in the blood have been investigated by chemical and biological methods including vitamin A by photo-electric colorimetric analysis (1), vitamin B1 by a fermentation method (2), nicotinic acid by a microbiological assay with Shigella paradysenteriae ( 3), pantothenic acid by measuring the growth of such bacteria as Proteus morganii (4), and Lactobacillus casei E (5), vitamin C by 2, 6-dichlorophenolindophenol (6), (7), (8), vitamin D by a colorimetric method (9), and vitamin K by measuring the clotting power of the blood (10). According to the above methods, these vitamins are present in blood and some of …
