A Progress Report On The Preservation Of The Prairie, Ada Hayden

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In accord with the specifications of the Prairie Project sponsored by the Iowa Academy of Science, the following recommendations for preservation of prairie have been co-operatively formulated; a number of the most desirable remaining tracts of prairie representative of virgin soils, flora, and fauna have been described and photographed. Not all of the tracts reported in the survey of the state by counties have been yet inspected.

The trends in high school science teaching may be grouped under the headings curriculum, teacher training, and methods of teaching. Although no one is likely to object to this grouping, there are undoubtedly many individuals who will object to the following statement of trends. This is true because it is human to emphasize those educational trends which seem to be going in what the prognosticator believes is a sensible direction. Curriculum trends of the last 100 years have resulted in four reasonably well standardized courses in present-day high schools. From the ninth through the twelfth grade these courses are general …

An ecological study of the leaves of Quercus coccinea Muench. and Betula lenta L. was undertaken by the writer during the summer of 1945 at the Mountain Lake Biological Station of the University of Virginia in Giles County, Virginia. The writer wishes to express his appreciation to Dr. I. F. Lewis, Director of the Mountain Lake Biological Station, and Mr. Ruskin S. Freer of the Department of Biology of Lynchburg College, Lynchburg, Virginia, for their invaluable aid in the pursuance of this problem.

Volumes have been written on this topic and it would be the height of temerity to assume that anything really new could be contributed in this paper. Opinions, of course, differ and one justification for this discussion lies in the exchange of ideas which it may provoke. Another reason for discussing this subject stems from the present movement in colleges and secondary schools to inject the concept of so-called "general education" into the curriculum. The best-known effort of this sort is centered in Harvard College and has been reported in the volume "General Education in a Free Society." The general …

Sparing Genes For Further Evolution, J. A. Weir

The first step in biological evolution, according to the classical concept, was the ability of an organic entity, the gene, to duplicate itself by utilizing available inorganic molecules which themselves were incapable of reproduction. The next step was the acquisition by the gene of the property of catalyzing the production of a substance other than itself to be utilized as its host. In this way an aggregate of genes, each responsible for a specific reaction, could give rise to more complex structures. The manner of development of a simple organism would then depend upon the actions of the genes which …

Noteworthy People of UNI Documents

Herbert V. Hake attended graduate school at the University of Iowa, where he earned his master's degree in scenic design in 1933. In the summer of 1936, he began his career at the Iowa State Teachers College (ISTC) with the Theater Department. From 1938 to 1942 he served as technical director, scenic designer, and instructor of speech courses. He was a pioneer in radio and television.

Notes On The Egg Laying Habits Of The Soft Shell Turtles, William M. Goldsmith

During the summer of 1940 the writer with six students had an opportunity to study in the vicinity of Dubuque, certain nesting habits of the smooth, brown, soft-shell turtle Amyda mutica. The river was low during June and early July, offering ideal conditions for study when the sandbars and sandy shore lines were exposed. These are the most favorable nesting grounds of Amyda mutica. Since the conditions for field study were so favorable in this locality, it was decided that before the close of the next breeding season more thorough observations would be made. The latest directory has appeared during the war when many fields of science are marking time and when we have adopted a policy of interrupting the production of scientists. Knowing the names of plants and animals and their phylogenetic relationship to each other is highly essential for success in any field of biological study. In spite of the immense numbers of species of plants and animals, it is surprising how much can be accomplished in learning to recognize the common species of a region, by giving it some consistent attention. It would seem that plant and animal recognition should have a fairly large place in nature study work in the grades and m biology classes in high school. During the summers of 1938 to 1942 inclusive the writer was in charge of the course in Field Biology at the Iowa Lakeside Laboratory on Lake West Okoboji. The first two or three weeks of the course were spent in studying the breeding habits of the birds of the· region; this was supplemented by much informal work during the· rest of the season. The dates covered are approximately the last three weeks of June; all July and the first three weeks of August. On Transplanting Prairie Species, W. A. Anderson

Among the properties of prairie plants emphasized by Shimek (1925) was that of persistence. He referred several times to the way in which prairie species would persist in undisturbed strips and reinvade land which had been cleared of them, (1913,) (1931). This depends, however, upon natural sowing of seeds with subsequent establishment of colonies. This note deals with actual transplanting of living plants.

It is quite clear (Beeson, 1941) that factors other than the availability of a nutrient influence the concentration of that nutrient in the plant. If the concentration in the plant of a given nutrient is to be used as a measure of the availability of that nutrient in the soil, then the other factors affecting the concentration must be evaluated so that correction factors can be established or else a method of sampling must be evolved in which the influence of the factors is negligible. Previous work by several authors indicates that sampling error can be reduced if the morphologically …
