Culture Of Excised Embryos Of Pinus Ponderosa, Virgil K. Howe Jan 1962

Culture Of Excised Embryos Of Pinus Ponderosa, Virgil K. Howe

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Embryos of Pinus ponderosa Laws. were excised and placed on a nutrient agar medium to which auxins in varying concentrations had been added. Results indicated that when the auxins were dissolved in and diluted with 40 per cent alcohol there was inhibition of seedling growth and development. Techniques were devised which eliminated the use of alcohol. In the absence of alcohol, morphologically normal seedlings were produced which were transferred to quartz sand after 60 days and at 113 days were transplanted into soil. Apparent normal growth and development continued throughout the duration of the experiment. The addition of auxins produced …

Vernal Breeding Of Cottontails In Iowa, Paul D. Kline

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Studies of 399 cottontails (Sylvilagus floridanus mearnsii) taken during the winter and spring of 1958 through 1961 have established the early portion of the breeding season for the species in Iowa. Males attained breeding condition starting in February. Pregnant females occurred late in February. Most females became pregnant for the first time in March. All females examined after April 1 were pregnant. Differences in commencement of the breeding season from one year to another were noted. A statistically significant difference in average size of first and second embryonic litters was noted. Litters from northern Iowa averaged larger than those …

A Post-Kansan Peat At Grinnell, Iowa: A Preliminary Report, Ben F. Graham Jr. Jan 1962

A Post-Kansan Peat At Grinnell, Iowa: A Preliminary Report, Ben F. Graham Jr.

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In June, 1960, a 2-ft. post-Kansan peat deposit was exposed in a building excavation in Grinnell (Poweshiek Co.), Iowa. A Kansan gumbotil lies beneath the peat, and approximately 16 ft. of loess lies above it. Well-preserved wood and pollen of coniferous forest species are abundant. Because there is no overlying till, the deposit is tentatively classified as of Buchanan age.

Radiochemistry And Removal Characteristics Of Radium Isotopes In Iowa Well Waters, R. L. Morris, J. W. Klinsky Jan 1962

Radiochemistry And Removal Characteristics Of Radium Isotopes In Iowa Well Waters, R. L. Morris, J. W. Klinsky

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Significant concentrations of radium -226, a naturally occurring isotope which has no relationship to fallout, have been detected in a number of deep wells in Iowa. Wells that have significant radium concentrations are located in smaller communities mostly in southeastern part of the State. Several of the towns have municipal zeolite softening processes which remove radium down to low levels. In some cases where the raw well water shows relatively high concentrations, zeolite softened water distributed to the public has had approximately 90 percent of the radium removed. Wells tested so far show that the average radium values are in …

Measurement Of Xylary Fluid Movement In Elm By The Thermoelectric Method, Harold S. Mcnabb Jr., John H. Hart Jan 1962

Measurement Of Xylary Fluid Movement In Elm By The Thermoelectric Method, Harold S. Mcnabb Jr., John H. Hart

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The thermoelectric method was used to determine the effect of external conditions and diurnal variation on the direction of xylary fluid movement in elm branches. Upward movement was detected under conditions favoring normal transpirational rates. No movement was detected during darkness or rainy conditions. Possible downward movement of branch fluid was indicated during late afternoon. Further refinement of the technique is needed for clarifying the latter observation.

A Useful Planting-Jig And Plot Design For Experimental Plantings, Ben F. Graham Jr. Jan 1962

A Useful Planting-Jig And Plot Design For Experimental Plantings, Ben F. Graham Jr.

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In experimental plantings intended to demonstrate interactions between plants it is desirable that the distance between plants be uniform. A planting pattern is suggested in which each of 100 plants is equidistant from all of its neighbors; and a simple planting-jig, which is readily adaptable for spacings up to one meter, is described.

Semi-Controlled Hunting Of Waterfowl At Lake Odessa, Louisa County, Lowa - 1960 And 1961, James G. Sieh, William Aspelmeier Jan 1962

Semi-Controlled Hunting Of Waterfowl At Lake Odessa, Louisa County, Lowa - 1960 And 1961, James G. Sieh, William Aspelmeier

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In 1960 and in 1961 two "controlled" shooting areas with a total of 25 '"blind" sites were established at Lake Odessa, Wapello, Iowa. The remaining "uncontrolled" portion of the public hunting area was open without special restrictions. Checking stations were operated at each of the two main access points. A total of 6,014 hunters harvested 6,499 waterfowl in 33,968 hours, averaging one bird for each 5.2 hours of hunting in 1960. In 1961 a total of 3,391 hunters killed 3,391 waterfowl in 17,618 hours, averaging one bird for each 5.2 hours of hunting. Hunter success, expressed as the number of …

The Control Of Nuisance Aquatic Vegetation With Black Polyethylene Plastic, J. K. Mayhew, Sylvan T. Runkel Jan 1962

The Control Of Nuisance Aquatic Vegetation With Black Polyethylene Plastic, J. K. Mayhew, Sylvan T. Runkel

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Large sheets of black polyethylene plastic were to control nuisance aquatic vegetation in small farm ponds and lakes. The plastic was floated over vegetation beds and left unattended for a predetermined number of days. Adequate control of all species of Potomageton was achieved in 10 to 18 days. Ceratophyllum demersum was eliminated in the control plots in 18 to 28 days. Control was unsuccessful for Chara vulgaris and Saggattarius latifolia. All control plots were revegetated with filamentous algae within 30 days after the covering was removed.

A Central Iowa Pheasant Nesting Study, 1961, Vernon Wright, Paul Otte Jan 1962

A Central Iowa Pheasant Nesting Study, 1961, Vernon Wright, Paul Otte

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A study of nesting success of pheasants (Phasianus colchicus) on three areas in central Iowa in 1961 showed that the peak of nest establishment occurred between May 16 and May 30. Hatching success varied inversely with pheasant population density. Twenty-four of the 96 nests found hatched successfully. Roadsides sheltered the highest percentage of nests on a per acre basis (46 nests/100 acres), followed by hayfields (24 nests/100 acres) and oatfields (4.7 nests/100 acres). Idle land and fence rows contained the fewest number of nests. Most nests were located in cover from 16 to 22 inches in height. No significant …

Effects Of Continued Selfing On Hymenolepis Nano (Cestoda), Wallace A. Rodgers, Martin J. Ulmer Jan 1962

Effects Of Continued Selfing On Hymenolepis Nano (Cestoda), Wallace A. Rodgers, Martin J. Ulmer

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The effects of selfing on Hymenolepis nana were investigated by establishing single infections in mice, thus ensuring self-fertilization. Selfing appears to increase the frequency of cysticercoid abnormalities. The proportion of eggs developing into cysticercoids in Tribolium confusum appears to decrease with continued selfing. Similarly, the proportion of cysticercoids developing into adults in mice decreases with continued selfing. Selfing causes no observable variation in the size of either adults or cysticercoids, nor does it cause changes in the frequency of appearance of certain morphological variants of the adult worm. The variant of reversal of genital pore appears to cause sterility of …

Active Transport Of D-Galactose And 3-0-Methylglucose By Turtle Lntestine, Alice Marie Fox Jan 1962

Active Transport Of D-Galactose And 3-0-Methylglucose By Turtle Lntestine, Alice Marie Fox

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Isolated segments of the intestine of turtle (Chrysemys picta) were found to transport D-galactose and 3-0-methyglucose against a concentration gradient in vitro at 30° C. Uptake of both sugars by the mucosal epithelium was directly dependent upon the concentration of sugar in the external fluid. Evidence indicated that 3-methylglucose is not metabolized by turtle intestinal tissue while D-galactose is. Both sugars were absorbed well by upper or middle intestinal segments, but 3-0-methyglucose was absorbed at a faster rate than D-galactose. It was concluded that neither substitution of the hydroxyl group at the third Carbon of the ring by a …

Creel Census Of Des Moines River Fishermen In Boone, Dallas, And Polk Counties, Iowa, Harry M. Harrison Jan 1962

Creel Census Of Des Moines River Fishermen In Boone, Dallas, And Polk Counties, Iowa, Harry M. Harrison

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Creel censuses were conducted on the Des Moines River during the open water seasons, usually April through November, from 1953 through 1961. The data indicated a relatively constant catch of fish. The rate of annual catch varied between a minimum of 0.26 and a maximum of 0.61 fish per fisherman-hour. The data were also analyzed by "proficiency categories" involving (1) all fishermen, (2) fishermen with one fish, (3) fishermen with two fish, and (4) fishermen with three or more fish. The most proficient fishermen (those with three or more fish at the time of interview) constituted l3 per cent of …

Development And Comparative Morphology Of The Gonopodium Of Goodeid Fishes, Clarence L. Turner, Gullermo Mendoza, Rebecca Reiter Jan 1962

Development And Comparative Morphology Of The Gonopodium Of Goodeid Fishes, Clarence L. Turner, Gullermo Mendoza, Rebecca Reiter

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The Goodeidae, one of four families of the cyprinodont fishes and all of whose species are viviparous have a modified anal fin in males for intromission of sperm. This gonopodium, with structures specific for each species, develop under the dual controls of genetically determined patterns and endogenous androgenic hormones. In males of all species of the family, rays 2 to 7 of the anal fin are shorter than the other rays and in some species they are single instead of bifurcated. The rays of this complex are strongly recurved and slender in some species. A comparative study of rays 2 …
