The Effect Of Kinetin On The Multiplication Rate Of Blepharisma Undulans, Mary Annunciata Mcmanus, Mary Sharon Geraghty

Kinetin, 6-furfurylaminopuime, has been found to promote cell division in plants, and has also been reported to increase the rate of division of animal cells. In previous studies of its effect on the rate of division of Paramecium caudatum, some workers have found a stimulatory effect, whereas others have found inhibition. The effect of low concentrations of kinetin (K) on the rate of division was tested for another ciliate, Blepharisma undulans. No significant stimulation of division was found. A significant inhibition of division was found after treatment with 0.5 ppm K and with 1.5 ppm K.

Bobwhite Quail, Winter Weather And Agriculture, M. E. Stempel

Bobwhite quail are still found in most of their historic range which extends north into Minnesota. The best Iowa populations are in the three southern tiers of Iowa counties. Their peak abundance occurred before 1900. Long cold winters and deep snows usually decrease quail numbers. However, in the best brushy cover near grain fields, they have persisted in good numbers even though the bitter cold winters of 1912, 1936 and 1960. The 1960 winter losses were estimated at about 70 per cent in scanty cover, but as low as 10 percent in high quality cover.

Detection And Measurement Of Air-Borne Radiation At Grinnell, Iowa, Michael P. Schulhof, James Wolfson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A relatively simple method is presented for the detection and measurement of total air-borne radiation. It employs only a scintillation counter, and ordinary laboratory materials. Using this method, a monitoring station was established for the period from the Fall of 1961 through the Spring of 1962. The results from this study, when compared with the results published by the United States Public Health Service, indicate a high degree of reliability in the method used.

A list of seventy-one flowering plants characteristic of fens is presented. They represent the fen flora from a complex of twenty-seven previously unreported fens, or small, calcareous, springy marshes, bordering Dug-out Creek in Excelsior Township, Dickinson County, Iowa.

A type of quantitative approach is applied to the description of variation within and between mass collections of two angiosprem genera in the central Rocky Mountains. No taxonomic status changes are suggested. These studies are preliminary and suggest a means of approaching a more objective taxonomy.

A diatom flora associated with a lichen (Collema sp.) and various mosses on a sandstone outcrop in Boone County, Iowa, is analyzed. Species rated "common in collection'', are Melosira roseana Rabh., Pinnularia lata Breb., Navicula gibbula Cleve, Navicula mutica Kutz., N. mutlca, var. Cohnii (Hilse) Grun., Navicula contenta var. biceps Arnott, Achnanthes (Achnanthidium) coarctata Breb., and Hantzschia amphioxys (Ehr.) Grun. Less common species are Hantzschia amphioxys var. major Grun., Caloneis bacillum (Grun.) Meresch, Neidium knuthii, var. heilprinensis Foged, Navicula mutica var. nivalis (Ehr.) One of the greatest results of the increased popular interests in science has been the development of advanced high school science courses. These courses have necessitated the reexamination of junior high school science curricula. In line with this reconsideration the University High School of the State University of Iowa has developed a special junior high school science sequence to aid in this preparation. This is a brief review of the county conservation program, a new trend in Iowa conservation. The early legal history is traced, and major provisions of the Iowa law are identified. An itemized list indicates the chief uses of newly acquired land by the 62 county boards. Illustrations are given to suggest the relatively unexplored educational and scientific possibilities of this new trend. This applies particularly to botany, archeology, and "nature education."

The Iowa State Conservation Commission purchased 1,535 muskellunge (3/4 to 1-inch fry) in 1960, from "Kenu," a Land-O-Lakes, Wisconsin commercial fish hatchery. Siewers Spring State Fish Hatchery and rearing pond facilities were used for the experimental rearing project. Eighty-five fish survived the June 7 to September 30 rearing period. Forty fish were stocked in each of the following Iowa lakes: West Okoboji, Dickinson County and Clear Lake, Cerro Gordo County. Two specimens have subsequently been recovered and identified from each lake.

Life History Of The Creek Chub, With Emphasis On Growth, James J. Dinsmore

Age and growth of 151 creek chubs, Semotilus atromaculatus, from the Des Moines River in 1961 were determined by scale and length-frequency methods. The body scale relationship had an intercept of 8.3 millimeters in total length. Chubs reached total lengths of 58, 95, and 128 millimeters at the formation of the first, second and third annuli respectively. Annuli form in May. Weight increased approximately as the cube of the length. The most important food items were plant material, aquatic insects, and, in the case of larger chubs, fish. Measurement of relative humidity has been neglected in most biological field studies partly because of difficulty of accurate measurement. This paper reviews classical relative humidity instruments and modern electrical transducers. Accuracies and operational problems are compared. Finally several approaches to construction of electronic humidity measuring instruments are presented together with a schematic of one circuit which has been field-tested.

Mixed colonies of ants (Formica fossaceps Buren and Formica obscuriventris clivia Creighton) offer unique opportunities to determine the extent to which two species living together share a single communal life. The proportion of workers of the two species present in a single colony differs from colony to colony but is relatively constant over periods lasting up to 16 years. Worker ants from four pure and from four mixed colonies have been measured with the scape as an index of size. The same size series of workers is found in pure and in mixed colonies, but the relative proportion of workers …

An Analysis Of Mite Populations In Muskrat Houses, Robert A. Buckley, Ellis A. Hicks

During the summers of 1960 and 1961, samples of material from muskrat houses in Goose Lake, Hamilton County, Iowa, were analyzed for their acarine content to obtain information on the factors influencing the composition of mite populations. Representatives of 18 different families or groups were obtained. Their ecology is discussed from the following relationships: (1) immediately available flora and composition of muskrat houses, (2) size of houses and occurrence of mites, (3) utility of houses and occurrence of mites, (4) sampling area of houses and occurrence of mites, and (5) the mite populations themselves.

A genetic test for the identity of two mutants "Dysoptic" and "Blind" was made. The results of breeding point to their identity, but the results are not absolutely conclusive. A study of the Dysoptic-Blind embryo may furnish the final evidence.

Effects Of The Antithyroid Drug, Propylthiouracil, On Organ Weights, Nacl Intake, And Blood Glucose Levels Of Adrenolectomized White Rats, Ross A. Madden

The antithyroid drug, propylthiouracil, results in anatomical changes and increase in NaCl solution intake within one week of treatment. These changes are independent of the adrenal gland. The blood glucose levels are not changed greatly with propylthiouracil treatment.

The Influence Of The Antithyroid Drug, Propylthiouracil, On Gestation And Lactation In Rats, Kenneth M. Cook

The anti-thyroid drug, propylthiouracil (PTU), when fed to female rats at the dietary level of 0.1% has a slight effect on the average number of young per litter if administered during the preconception period or gestation but if administered continuously during these periods results in a much lower litter size. PTU treatment of mothers during lactation results in cretin-like young and poor survival rates during lactation and after weaning. Ratios of thyroid weight to body weight indicate transfer of PTU to young during gestation and lactation.
