PSSC Physics was introduced in one of our high schools, a city-wide elementary science committee began to look seriously at the K-6 science program, and the instruction time for seventh and eighth grade science classes was doubled.

Science education must advance with the times. Methods and ideas must change. We, as teachers, are being closely scrutinized. We can no longer sit back complacently. Since Sputnik, there has been grave concern over the ability of our students to apply knowledge to practical problems. Students are naturally curious so we must develop their inquiring minds and instill in them habits of sound reasoning, accurate judgment, and careful evaluation. To live in our democracy of the twentieth century the students must be trained to develop their powers of critical thinking.

Eighty-two sporocarps of fleshy fungi were collected during the summer of 1962. In the collections were seven species. Peziza sylvestris (Bond.) Sacc. & Trott., Cortinarius uraceus Fr., Clitopilus subvilis Pk., Inocybe radiata Pk., Inocybe geophylla Fr., Lactarius hysginus Fr., Mycena subcaerulea (Pk.) Sacc., and one genus, Nolanea Fr., not previously reported for the state of Iowa.

Report On A Fungus Isolated From An Ozone Meter, Mary M. Vinje, James M. Vinje

The fungus Penicillium lilacinum Thom was found to be responsible for the malfunction of ozone meters sent in from such widely divergent geographical locations as Iowa; Tennessee; Washington, D. C.; Maryland; Ottawa, Canada; and Hawaii. In 12 out of 15 isolations a pure culture of the fungus was obtained. The source of the fungus was traced to the rubber used in the assembly of the solution pump. The sensor solution used in the machine proved to be inhibitory but not fungicidal. Attempts at control included chemical additives of which methylparaben, scorbic acid, propylparaben, and sodium benzoate were all stimulants when …

Media Sterilization With Propylene Oxide, Robert C. Goss, Jack L. Marr

Sterilization of potato dextrose agar against bacteria air contaminants occurs during the 6th hour of exposure and against fungi in the 4th hour. The fungicidal activity was broader than the bactericidal activity of propylene oxide. Direct application of propylene oxide to Petri plates containing PDA was ineffective. With plastic plates a chemical reaction took place between the chemical and the plastic. In a closed system sterilization of the plates and medium was accomplished at approximately 1.25 ml of propylene oxide per liter of volume. The addition of propylene oxide directly to nutrient broth effected 90% sterility under certain conditions.

Some Empirical Regularities Of The Humber River Drainage Net, Michael C. Roberts

In describing the drainage net of the Humber River (Ontario), the various parameters used (stream length, number, order: basin area: mean annual discharge) were found to have clear linear relationships. These relationships could not have arisen by chance, and, hence, reflect the regularity of the erosional processes at work. Product moment correlation analysis was also employed between stream length and basin area.

Effect Of Irradiation On Nissl Granules In Rat Spinal Cord Neurons - A Pilot Study, S. D. Miroyiannis, B. A. Raines, V. Jurczenko

Literature concerning the structure and function of Nissl granules and the effect of irradiation on the central nervous system is reviewed. Four groups of rats were irradiated in the lower thoracic spinal region, using doses of 600 r, 900 r, 1200 r, and 4200 r respectively. Higher doses of the irradiation caused depletion of the Nissl granules and other effects on the nerve cells. Increasing chromatolysis was found with increasing doses of irradiation. These findings warrant further study.

Relative Mitochondrial Volume In Liver Cells Of A/Jax Mice Under Influence Of Carbon Tetrachloride, Jim N. Tone, Leland P. Johnson

The purpose of this study was to determine the relative volume of mitochondria in situ in hepatic cells adjacent to the interlobular veins in the livers of normal A-Jax mice and of A-Jax mice fed carbon tetrachloride dosages for varying periods of time. The liver tissues were fixed in Regaud's fluid, sectioned at 3 microns, and stained with iron haematoxylin. A procedure developed by Meglitsch et al. was utilized in determining the relative mitochondrial volume of the hepatic cells. In summer, 1961, 10 nests, representing seven species of passeriform birds, were collected and processed in Berlese funnels to obtain the mites present. Representatives of 20 different families or superfamilies were identified in addition to five groups of larvae and nymphs which could not be identified to family. The families Eremaeidae and Dermanyssidae were most widely represented, and dermanyssids were most numerous. Mite populations are believed to become established in nests by (1) mites being brought into the nest by way of nest materials, (2) mites being brought into the nest on the bird itself, and (3) mites in their …

The Effects Of 600 Roentgens Of X-1 Irradiation On The Nuclei Of Mouse Liver Cells, Laverne Boldhaupt

Four methods were employed to detect a change in the parenchymal nuclei of liver cells in 8 = week old female A-Jax mice after receiving 600 roentgens of localized X-irradiation. These methods were: (1) determination of the percentage of parenchymal cell volume made up of nuclear material by means of the Chalkley point = ratio method, (2) estimation of the actual nuclear volume by means of camera lucida drawings, (3) estimation of the number of nuclei per cc of tissue, and (4) estimation of the ploidy distribution of the nuclei as inferred from nuclear volumes. Return Of Pigment In Regenerative Tissue After Inhibition By Phenylthiourea, Francis Clare Ladd

Inhibition of melanogenesis in larval cells of five amphibian species (two genera) was attained by phenylthiourea treatment. Buff-colored granules were demonstrated in cells of three species, gray granules in two. Pigment returned five to fifteen minutes after withdrawal of PTU. The delay is thought to be due to the time needed for the autocatalytic formation of some dihydroxyphenylalanine, which with tyrosinase is required for melanogenesis, as reported by Lerner and Case. Results obtained with living cells were corroborated by study of fixed material. The data support an origin within the Golgi complex or endoplasmic reticulum.

An Inexpensive Microscope Llluminator, Donald G. Delisle

Adequate lighting is often a problem when using microscopes without integral illumination. The lamp described is constructed of inexpensive and easily obtainable parts. It provides ample light for four student microscopes at considerably less cost than most currently available units.

Additions To The Vascular Flora Of South Central Iowa, Reldon Beck

A field survey of Warren County made during the months of April, May, and June of 1962 identified over 200 collections of flowering plants. During the fall of 1962 a survey of the Red Rock Dam area identified over 50 collections of flowering plants. Simpson College Herbarium specimens of these areas were carefully checked and annotated. In these collections, 17 species were found that had not been previously published for these areas.

A Study Of Photosynthesis In Clear Lake, Lowa, Cornelius I. Weber

The oxygen and carbon-14 methods were used to measure photosynthesis in Clear Lake, Iowa during 1958 and 1959. Differences in the rates of photosynthesis at widely separated stations were generally small. Daily variations in the rate of photosynthesis were not greater than two-fold. The correlation between the rate of photosynthesis and the incident illumination was 0.81, and the efficiency of utilization of incident light energy was 0.72 per cent. The net gain of organic matter at the phytoplankton level during the period May 1 to November 1 was equivalent to 3480 pounds of glucose per acre.

Disorientation of daughter colonies of Pediastrum was induced by reduction of the bicarbonate ion concentration in the culture medium. Threshold values were established for disorientation by the use of two sources of bicarbonate ions. Below these threshold values daughter colonies were disoriented; above them, oriented. When placed in new solutions having bicarbonate ion concentrations above the threshold values, colonies which were disoriented by bicarbonate ion deficiency produced oriented daughter colonies. When placed into new solutions having higher bicarbonate ion concentrations, colonies cultured in solutions with bicarbonate ion concentrations above threshold values increased cell divisions in the mother cells and hence …

The Demonstration Of Mitotic Figures In Green Algae, William R. Bowen

Wittman's aceto-iron-haematoxylin stain was combined with Hoyer's mounting medium in a rapid method for demonstrating mitosis in the green algae. Both filamentous and unicellular forms were killed, fixed, and stained in one step with the self-mordanting stain. Cells were then washed with acetic acid and transferred directly to the water-soluble Hoyer's medium. Slides prepared in this manner are permanent. Chlorophyll was bleached from the algal cells by this medium. This revealed the stained nuclei and mitotic figures. This simplified technique is particularly suitable for student use.

In summary, surveys conducted at the State University of Iowa have revealed the following points that lead to a single conclusion: 1) Science teachers in Iowa are generally eager to improve their courses and their teaching. 2) Science teachers desire help from the colleges in securing appropriate training in order to approach the "new" science courses. 3) New graduates of most colleges and Universities feel wholly inadequate about teaching the new courses. 4) Apparently considerable reorganization of college curricula is necessary to provide certified teachers who would be ready to teach the CBA course (and presumably the other new courses). …

Natural areas are being rapidly destroyed throughout the world and especially in Iowa with its intensive agriculture. Natural areas are valuable as sources of research materials, for documentation of accomplished research, for teaching, and for recreation. Through cooperative action between public and private organizations, many natural areas have been preserved in Iowa. However, recreational and other use of these areas may destroy their natural values. It is important that many more natural areas be preserved by such organizations as The Nature Conservancy as well as the state. Of particular value are teaching and research areas near schools, unusual habitats with …

White-tailed jackrabbits, Lepus townsendii campanius Hollister, are found throughout Iowa with the exception of a few southeastern counties. Over much of their range they are relatively rare. They appear in greatest abundance on the recently glaciated soils in northern and central counties, and on the Missouri loess soils of the west-central counties. Dry growing seasons seem conducive to hare abundance; populations decline during wet seasons. Jackrabbits provide considerable hunting sport during winter. Their pelts are utilized in felt manufacture and their flesh as a staple food for ranch mink. They are known to eat sprouting corn and soybeans, and occasionally …

The Vocational Bureau, established by Frank Parsons in 1909, represented one of the first organized efforts to supplement home guidance. Since that time the scope of guidance has expanded from vocational guidance to include educational and socio-personal guidance as well. With the rapid increase in guidance services in schools, research concerning the guidance program has not kept pace.
