The Production Of Agglutinins In Response To Antigens Of Ascaris Lumricoides Var. Suum, James Lee Prouty

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Studies of immunological reactions with Ascaris lumbricoides var. suum have been carried out by a number of investigators involving in vitro and in vivo tests. As far as can be determined agglutinin antibodies have not been demonstrated. It seems likely that agglutinins may be produced in experimental animals if appropriate techniques for their demonstration are devised. Two rabbits were bled initially from the external marginal ear vein. These sera were used as controls. The rabbits were immunized with body fluid and egg antigens of Ascaris lumbricoides var. suum at various intervals for a three and one-half week period. At the …

Preliminary Investigation Of Thermokarst Development On The North Slope, Alaska, Gary S. Anderson, Keith M. Hussey

The North Slope of Alaska is extensively featured by a characteristic form of morphology designated "thermokarst". Briefly, thermokarst is a term applied to a "karst-like" topography formed in permafrost regions that have had extensive thaw. Aerial photographs of the North Slope reveal many thaw features that have forms analogous to karst areas.

A Comparison Of The Abilities Of Secondary Teachers And Students Of Biology To Understand Science, Phillip E. Miller

A comparison of the level of understanding science between secondary teachers and students has been conducted. The biology teachers were made up of two groups. The newly certificated group had just completed their college training; and the other group was made up of experienced, on the job, teachers. The biology teachers were compared with groups of secondary biology students in grades 7-12 inclusive. Significant differences were found between the 7th grade group and all other groups, except the 8th grade group. The implications of teachers with less understanding of science than a sizable group of their students is discussed. There …

Minnow Population Of Grimes Creek In Relation To Pollution, Earl E. Kelling

Weekly minnow collections were made from August 13 to November 26, 1960, at five stations in Grimes Creek. Six major species were identified, counted and measured. The upper region of the creek was abandoned by the minnow population within a few days after pollution from a canning factory at Grimes, Iowa entered the stream. Late spawning species of minnows were unable to spawn successfully, which suggested one mechanism for selective evolution of minnow populations.

The Effects Of Phlorizin, 2,4-Dinitrophenol, And Oxygen Deprivation On The Intestinal Transport Of D-Glucose, Alice Marie Fox

The effect of various concentrations of phlorizin and 2,4-dinitrophenol, plus the effect of oxygen deprivation on intestinal absorption of D-glucose was investigated. Paired segments of turtle (Chrysemys picta) small intestine in vitro were used. Preparations were incubated for one hour in a shaking water bath at 30°C in Krebs-Ringer-bicarbonate, with or without inhibitor. Phlorizin, in all concentrations used, was found to prevent uptake of glucose by the mucosal epithelium. Inhibition also occurred, in a lesser degree, with 2,4-dinitrophenol, and when the system was flushed with nitrogen instead of air.

The digestive tract of the potato leafhopper Empoasca fabae (Harris) was very much like descriptions of the tracts of other Empoasca and closely related Cicadellidae. Major morphological differences: (1) no filter chamber was present in E. fabae, (2) the Malpighian tubules were joined at their distal ends which lie free in the body cavity, (3) and the fourth Malpighian tubule branched from one of the other tubules. Gustatory Responses Of A Tropical Frugivorous Bat, Irving F. Fisherman

The electrical activity of the chorda tympani nerve in response to chemical stimulation of the tongue of the tropical frugivorous bat Artibeus jamaicensis was compared to that of several rodents and carnivores. The slope of the NaCl response-concentration curve is much steeper than curves for the other animals and the maximum response is reached at a lower concentration (approximately 0.25M NaCl). NaCl is a more adequate stimulus than NH₄Cl, LiCl is approximately equal to NaCl, and KCl response is low. The Plasmodium Of The Myxomycete Cribraria Violacea, Mary Annunciata Mcmanus

Cribraria violacea is a minute myxomycete which could be expected to possess a protoplasmodium similar to the plasmodia of other minute species such as Clastoderma debaryanum, Echinostelium minutum, and Licea parasitica. Observations reported here show that it differs from protoplasmodia previously described in forming a small network with a fanlike area at the advancing front, and in showing protoplasmic streaming which did not reverse its direction of flow during two 40-minute periods of continuous observation.

A Preliminary Study Of Chromosome Number In Oak Sprouts, David F. Conover

A preliminary study of chromosome numbers in oak sprouts was undertaken to determine the frequency of polyploid stump sprouts. A satisfactory method of making slide mounts using lateral bud primordia of newly burst buds was developed. None of the limited number examined to date was polyploid.

Analysis Of Fe2o3, Tio2 And Cr2o3 In Mullite By X-Ray Fluorescence, M. O. Marlowe, Thomas D. Mcgee

The basic theory and methods of X-ray fluorescence are briefly discussed. Pure synthetic mullite was made by mixing aluminum and silicon chlorides in non-aqueous solvent, coprecipitating as hydroxides, calcining to remove solvents and firing to 1600°C. Additions of Fe₂O₃, TiO₂ and Cr₂O₃ to the high purity mullite were used to produce standard calibration curves for use in the analysis of unknowns. Experimental techniques are described and standard curves are presented. The method is rapid and results are comparable in accuracy to those of wet chemical analysis.

Age, Growth, And Food Habits Of Johnny, Slenderhead And Blacksided Darters Of Boone County, Lowa, James R. Karr

Age, growth, and food habit studies were done on 61 johnny darters, Etheostoma nigrum, 25 slenderhead darters, Percina phoxocephala, and 18 blacksided darters, P. maculata, taken from the Des Moines River, Boone County, Iowa, during the summer 1962. The growth rate of blacksided darter is faster than either of the other two species. Coefficients of condition, length-weight relationships, and body-scale relationships are similar for the three species. The food of all species is over 90% insect. Leeches and tapeworms parasitized the darters.
