There are primarily five areas of techniques which should be considered when dealing with the slow learner in biology. The northern common shiner, Notropis cornutus frontalis, was omnivorous in its feeding, but the type of food utilized was greatly influenced by water levels. Reproduction was later in Squaw Creek than in the Des Moines River. Males had consistently higher condition factors than females. Fish grew faster in Squaw Creek than in the Des Moines River but failed to reach the length of the Des Moines River fish in their first year because of a later spawning period. Myxosporidians, nematodes, tapeworms, and copepods parasitized this species.

The Antagonistic Effect Of Strontium Ions For Anesthetization Of Paramecium Caudatum With Nickel Lons, Clair G. Rausch

The purpose of this investigation was (1) to compute the effects of strontium ion antagonism and the observed biological effect of the strontium ion for anestesia of Paramecium caudatum with the nickel ion, (2) to compare the prolonged effect of the strontium ion antagonism for nickel ions upon the vitality of P. caudatum for control groups using the fission rate as an index of vitality. The experimental data showed a biological antagonism of the strontium ions for the nickel ions in anesthetization of P. caudatum. Nuclei of the vegetative body of Stemonitis fusca have a nuclear membrane that is double and has pores and annuli. The nucleoplasm contains numerous chromocenters and a nucleolus that is without a limiting membrane and has the appearance of a nucleolonema. What appeared to be extensions of the nuclear membrane were often seen within the nucleoplasm, and structures resembling annulate lamellae were found near the outside of nuclei and elsewhere in the cytoplasm. Large blebs were sometimes seen extending outward from the nuclear membrane, and vesicles in the neighboring cytoplasm contained material identical in appearance with the contents of the …

Phase contrast and electron microscopic studies of the plasmodia of the phaneroplasmodium, aphanoplasmodium, and protoplasmodium types showed the presence of the usual organelles found in the cytoplasm of cells of higher organisms. Mitochondria are of the tubular type, there are both smooth and rough surfaced endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi membranes, vesicles and vacuoles of various types. Fibrils and filaments were seen in the cytoplasm, and there is a cell membrane of the usual type. Ribosomes and polysomes are seen in the ground plasm. No evidence of a centriole was ever seen.

Ninety-nine sporocarps of fleshy fungi were collected during the summer and fall of 1964. In the collections were six species, Boletus piperatus Bull., Clitopilus subplanus Pk., Collybia strictipes Pk., Cortinarius duracinus Fr., Cortinarius imbutus Fr., and Tricholoma acre Pk. not previously reported for the State of Iowa.

Status And Management Of The White-Tailed Deer In Iowa, 1954-1962, Paul D. Kline

Data regarding populations, hunting, harvest, and biology of Iowa deer (Odocoileus virginianus) gathered by the State Conservation Commission is presented from four ecologically distinct areas. Following 10 consecutive hunting seasons, deer are more abundant and better distributed than before. Abundance through the state is not consistent with available forest habitat. Separate seasons have been permitted for deer of any sex or age by shotgunners and archers on a statewide basis most years. Harvests during recent years have averaged near 20% of an increasing population. Hunting success for gunners during 3-day seasons has been near 45-50%. Bucks outnumber does in …

Comparative Growth Of Four Species Of Fish In Three Different Types Of Iowa Artificial Lakes, James Mayhew

Growth of four species of fish are compared in three different types of Iowa artificial lakes and reservoirs. The lakes were classified by similarity of physical, chemical, and biological characteristics. Scale samples and total length measurements were obtained from 14,705 fish at 71 impoundments. Largemouth bass, bluegill, black crappie, and white crappie growth was greatest in Group I lakes. Factors influencing differences in growth rate in the three types of impoundments are discussed.

Chemical analyses were made of the surface waters of 61 Iowa lakes and reservoirs during the summer of 1964. With the exception of one bog lake, they all had typical hard waters of the bicarbonate type. Their average composition was similar to the 10-year average compositions of the Iowa and Cedar rivers. There was a tendency for the lakes lying within the Wisconsin glacial drift sheet to have higher values for all parameters measured, although the differences were not considered biologically significant.

The Coralville Reservoir, located on the Iowa River just upstream from Iowa City, has as its primary purpose the control of floods on the rivers downstream. A conservation pool is maintained for recreational purposes. During December 1964 and January 1965, a combination of rather unusual circumstances caused an almost complete depletion of oxygen in the reservoir and resulted in a fish kill. Oxygen demand of the incoming water from a sudden winter rain greatly exceeded the available oxygen dissolved in the lake. A heavy ice cover prevented the renewal of oxygen by wind action. Life History And Ecology Of Western Blacknose Dace, Boone County, Iowa, 1963-1964, Richard L. Noble

A life history and ecology study of the western blacknose dace, Rhinichthys atratulus meleagris (Agassiz), was made on Elkhorn and Pease creeks, Boone County, Iowa. Total length equals 1.23 standard length; live length equals 1.03 preserved length; and live weight equals 0.90 preserved weight. Dace reached maturity at age II. Spawning occurred from early May through July over gravel. Number of eggs increased with length of females. Scale formation proceeded forward from the caudal peduncle at 16-20 mm standard length. Scale growth was not directly proportional to body growth. Annuli formed between March and May. Fish which lacked scales until …

Earth science was a common part of the high school curricula fifty years ago. It dropped from about 30% to.4% of the total school enrollment from 1900 to 1949. The decline of earth science was paralleled by an increased offering of biology. In the modern high school curricula it is replacing general science, mostly at the ninth grade level. Earth science offerings are on the increase in Iowa from 7 districts in 1960 to 53 in 1965, an increase of 757%, which is roughly 10% of the schools. Larval Development Of Four Caryophyllaeid Cestodes, Robert L. Calentine

Adults of the caryophyllaeid cestodes Glaridacris catostomi, Hunterella nodulosa, Monobothrium hunteri and Monobothrium ingens were recovered from naturally infected fishes. The oligochaete annelid intermediate hosts were experimentally infected with embryonated eggs of these cestodes. Fully developed procercoids were characterized by a scolex similar to that of the adult, also by a cercomer and primordia of reproductive organs.
