Optic Nerve Size In Blind And Normal Mice, Margaret L. Watson, Jean E. Mckinnie, Donald M. Evans
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Measurements of eyes and optic nerves of blind and normal mice were taken at ages ranging from 1-60 days. The mice used were from a Bagg albino strain in which a dominant mutation for blindness had occurred. The size of the optic nerve appears to be dependent upon the development of the eye. Optic nerves from blind eyes are smaller than those from normal eyes, and optic nerves from blind eyes without a lens and with a folded retina are smaller than those from eyes with a lens, even though the lens is vacuolated and the cornea is thickened.

The Histological Effects Of Tapazole On Rat Thyroids, Hearts, And Adrenals, Wade L. Collier

The anti-thyroid drug Tapazole, when fed to white rats at the dietary level of 0.1% Tapazole in finely ground laboratory meal, produces changes in body weight, thyroid weight and in the histological composition of the thyroid. Histological examination shows that the affected thyroids have undergone hypertrophy and hyperplasia. Tapazole does not seem to affect rat hearts or adrenals.

The dorsal fins of males of Ollentodon multipunctatus, Skifiia lemae and Skifiia variegata differ from the dorsal fins of the females. The first 4-5 rays of the male dorsal fins have a spine-like appearance and are separated from each other by a deep notching at the periphery of the fin membrane. The female fin is undifferentiated. The male dorsal is generally higher and longer at the base than the female fin. Similarly, the rays in the male fin are thicker than those in the female. After instruction in science, we as science teachers, hope that students have learned to analyze scientific data, to interpret data which will allow them to arrive at reasonable conclusions, and to evaluate approaches to problem solving in science. Specific Antibodies For Mycoplasma In Pheasants On Game Farms In Lowa, Steven Palmer, David J. Roslien

Serums from 838 ring-necked pheasants (Phasianus colchicus) reared on 28 Iowa game farms were tested for Mycoplasma gallisepticum specific antibodies. Two hundred serums reacted with tube agglutination antigen, but only eight were confirmed with the hemagglutination-inhibition test.

The chromosome number of 40 for the laboratory mouse was confirmed. A karyotype of mouse chromosomes was made. The chromosomes can be arranged into four groups based on size and shape.
