The Effects Of Isometric Contractions On Breathing And Pulse Rates In The Performance Of A Modified Harvard Step Test, Wallace A. Swan, Kenneth M. Cook

The degree of fitness as ascertained by performance of a modified Harvard Step Test did not increase over controls for isometrically trained individuals. However, improvement over a prior training period was apparent. The breathing rate is probably a satisfactory index of measurement for the Harvard Step Test but needs further elucidation.

Effects Of Estradiol Hormone On The Maturation Of The Gonads And Associated Duct System Of The Fish Lebistes Reticulatus, Michael Thomas Story

It was the purpose of this study to describe the secondary sex characters and the histological appearance of the gonads, including the associated duct system, of the fish Lebistes reticulatus from birth through differentiation and maturation when subjected to the hormone estradiol. Sixty-four Lebistes reticulatus were fed 0.125 mg of estradiol, beginning at birth, at intervals of 60 hours. An equal number of fish were used as the control. Fish were sacrificed at ten-day intervals following birth, for a period of 80 days, and examined for the presence of secondary sex characters. Serial cross sections of the gonads were prepared …

An Analysis Of Abnormal Development In The Cnbw-16 Stock Of Drosophila Melanogaster, Phillip J. Reitan

Developmental abnormalities in the embryonic period resulting from cobalt-60 induced mutations in Drosophila melanogaster are discussed. Embryos of 16 hours of development were studied. Among 32 abnormal embryos found in 52 eggs in this stock (Cnbw-16), eight having a consistent pattern of abnormality were studied. These embryos, designated as Cnbw-16, type a, all show a failure of embryonic shortening and midgut development. Associated abnormalities permit interpretation concerning the nature of normal development in three areas: (1) nerve cord condensation, (2) embryonic shortening, and (3) muscle fiber differentiation. Nerve cord condensation is partial in the absence of embryonic shortening. This indicates …

The Influence Of The Antithyroid Drug, Tapazole, On Reproduction In Rats, Daniel T. Geittmann

The antithyroid drug, Tapazole (methamazole, or imidazole-2-thio, 1-methyl), when fed to female rats at the dietary level of 0.1 % had a slight effect on the average number of young and weight per litter if administered during the preconception period. If given during the gestation period the results were harmful. Tapazole treatment of mothers during lactation resulted in lethargic cretin-like young, although survival rates during lactation and after weaning were good.

Radioisotope Distribution In Visceral Organs Of White Mice, Lester C. Shell, Denzil J. Hawes-Davis, Sam Mcclugage, Steve Livesey

White mice, previously medicated over a three week period with reserpine, thyroxine, ascorbic acid and streptomycin were given 0.3 Microcurie or radioactive phosphorus³² by intramuscular injection. After 24 hours the mice were sacrificed, ten organs removed, and the amount of radioactivity retained was recorded in counts per minute per gram. Results showed males retained more of the isotope than females in all organs except gonads and brain. Liver, intestine, and kidney retained more of the isotope than other organs with each medication. With the reserpine medicated animals there was less radioactivity retained by ten organs. The control group had the …

A Pilot Study Of The Thymus Of Propylthiouracil-Treated Rats, Maybelle G. Conklin

A study of the effects of propylthiouracil on the rat thymus showed histological changes in that tissue. The overall weight of the thymus tissue was reduced in comparison to the thymus weight of the control group. Histologically the thymus of the PTU group showed decreased width in the cortex with fewer lymphocytes and thymic corpuscles in the medullary portion. There appeared to be an intermediate area between the cortex and medulla rather than the distinct demarcation seen between the cortex and medulla of the normal rat thymus. A Quantitative Study Of The Dna And Rna In The Livers Of Albino Mice During The Estrus Cycle, Allan F. Wolfe

Several investigators have suggested that the nucleic acid content of mouse liver varied with the estrus cycle. Nucleic acids were extracted with trichloroacetic acid and ethanol. The quantity of DNA and RNA was determined with a spectrophotometer. No significant differences were observed in the quantity of DNA or RNA throughout the estrus cycle. Diversity in the amount of nucleic acids present among the livers of non-litter mates was one-third greater that that among litter mates. In studies of the nucleio acid content of mouse liver, little is gained by controlling the estrus cycle, but using litter mates is suggested to …

Preliminary observations of Eudorina cultures verified the presence of morphologically distinct forms of these colonial flagellates. Colonies were observed which contained fewer than the sixteen, thirty-two or sixty-four cells given as the definitive taxonomic characteristic of Eudorina. Some of these colonies were more compactly arranged with a reduction in the amount of inter-cellular matrix present. It was the purpose of this study (1) to determine whether differences could be detected in the biochemical composition of small compact Eudorina species and of Pandorina species and (2) to determine whether biochemical differences could be detected between the small and the larger forms …
