A Not-So-Obvious Solution To The Black Beetle Puzzle Jan 1972

A Not-So-Obvious Solution To The Black Beetle Puzzle

True or false: Most desert animals whose life styles keep them out and around during the day are light in color because, as scientists know, light coloration reflects heat and desert animals would naturally evolve in that direction?

A Comparison Of Girls' Achievement In Unisexual And Bisexual Physics Classes, Robert L. Hare Jan 1972

A Comparison Of Girls' Achievement In Unisexual And Bisexual Physics Classes, Robert L. Hare

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

A battle cry heard for the past few years is, "Why have physics enrollments not increased?" There have been many possible solutions to the problem, and many of them have had some success. For example, the Physical Science Study Committee and Harvard Project Physics have done much in creating interest in physics and thus have helped to increase physics enrollment. Also, the emphasis on laboratory experiences and the increase in audiovisual aids have contributed in making the physics classroom more enticing. It is the writer's opinion that a possible source of physics students might come from those of the female …

Group Independent Study: A Unique Approach To Undergraduate Research, James E. Privett Jan 1972

Group Independent Study: A Unique Approach To Undergraduate Research, James E. Privett

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Briar Cliff College has a program of independent study in the student's major field during the junior and senior years. In the past the program was used for library research projects and independent laboratory projects. In all cases the projects were truly independent, that is, separate projects for different students with no interconnections between projects. The investigator felt that it would be advantageous if all of the senior chemistry majors and some of the junior chemistry majors who felt ready for the experience would work on the same general research project but with each student studying just one aspect of …

Science For The Educationally Uninvolved Student, Joe R. Moore Jan 1972

Science For The Educationally Uninvolved Student, Joe R. Moore

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

In looking at science in today's high schools, one can come up with the following statistics. There are approximately four million students at each grade level between grades nine to 12. In biology classes we find 1.85 million students, in chemistry about 1.25 million and in physics only .25 million students. Over half of these students are enrolled in terminal or "slow-track" science courses, where they are neglected or forgotten, taught by the beginning teacher in a non-lab-oriented classroom. Almost every high school has a science course where the so-called "slow-learners" have been placed. These courses may come under a …

A Comparison Of The Effects Of A Team Approach And A Conventional Approach On Achievement In High School Biology, Paul Joslin, John Montean, John Schmitt

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

It is very easy to come by reports in support of almost any new practice in education. Teachers would rather report favorable results and journals would rather print them. It was the many published reports enumerating the advantages of team teaching that first interested us in a team teaching experiment. At the time we started in 1964, we summarized 141 publications with team teaching in their titles. There are only a limited number of advantages and disadvantages that can be hypothesized for any particular practice. It was not surprising, therefore, to find that recent reports tend to merely reassemble what …

What Is A.T.T.V. Biology?, Charles Frederick Jan 1972

What Is A.T.T.V. Biology?, Charles Frederick

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

A.T.T.V. Biology (Audio-tutorial Television Biology) is an approach to teaching a subject which is paced by closed circuit educational television. The curriculum material of the course is divided into units of work (modules). Each module consists of one week's classroom activities. For each module there are objectives and learning experiences to be completed within that week. The module suggests the minimal work expected of the student, and the student works directly from the module guide. When the student has completed the minimal learning experiences, he is free to pursue additional activities that are listed in the module. This is where …

A Learning Activity Package Approach To Junior High School Science, Jerry Cunningham, Ross Iverson Jan 1972

A Learning Activity Package Approach To Junior High School Science, Jerry Cunningham, Ross Iverson

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Our goals were to have a low-structured student centered program that made the best use of our physical facility, equipment, and teacher power. As a result, we formulated a design which included a format, procedures, and a set of materials. We feel that our design is adaptable to many situations and may provide some ideas for you. The courses we teach are exploratory. We hope to offer the student a wide variety of new experiences while developing a continuing interest in the study of science and a systematic approach to solving problems.

Copepoda And Cladocera Populations Of Red Rock Reservoir, Iowa From April To November, 1970, Ronald L. Asch, Phyllis J. Kingsbury

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The effects of nutrient renewal, conservation pool water level, and the average weekly discharge rate on the species composition, relative abundance, and population fluctuations of the Copepoda and Cladocera of Red Rock Reservoir were determined. The average retention time (flushing rate) was 11.2 days. Twenty-one species were identified with the dominants being Cyclops spp., Diaptomus spp., Daphnia spp., Bosmina longirostris, Moina micrura, Ceriodaphnia quadrangula, and Diaphano-soma spp. Three distinct seasonal peaks in population growth were noted. Population fluctuations showed slight correlation with temperature, transparency, discharge rate, nutrient levels and no relationship was seen with water level. A time interval of …

Organizing A Community Resource File For The Imc, Janice Ann Holmes Jan 1972

Organizing A Community Resource File For The Imc, Janice Ann Holmes

Graduate Research Papers

The IMC should have a file of the resources in the community, and perhaps the surrounding area of outside persons and materials, that can be used in connection with a classroom program, Such a file located in the IJVIC would be accessible to all the professional staff in the building and be valuable to a newcomer on the staff.

A file as a guide to community resources that can be used as instructional materials should be located with the rest of the instructional materials in the IMC.

This paper presents some suggestions as how to find the community resources and …

Feeding Of Black Bullheads Ictalurus Melas (Rafinesque) In Experimental Cages, Kay R. Hill Jan 1972

Feeding Of Black Bullheads Ictalurus Melas (Rafinesque) In Experimental Cages, Kay R. Hill

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Black Bullheads, Ictalurus Melas (Rafinesque), were grown experimentally in two cage sizes from 25 July through 16 October, 1969. Little difference in fish growth between the two cage sizes was observed. Over 75% of total gain occurred while water temperatures were between 23 and 24°C. Better food conversion ratios were obtained when water temperature was above 23°C than when water temperature was below 23°C. Little difference in fish condition between the two cage sizes was observed. Fish were produced slightly more economically in the larger cages ($1.01/kg.) than in smaller cages ($1.05/kg.).

A Study Of Some Effects Of Water Chemistry On Growth Of Betta Splendens, Jack A. Gerlovich, Gene A. Lucas Jan 1972

A Study Of Some Effects Of Water Chemistry On Growth Of Betta Splendens, Jack A. Gerlovich, Gene A. Lucas

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Experimental (varying water chemistry) and Control (constant water chemistry) quart jars· containing single specimens of the fish were tested over an eighteen-week period. Organisms were weighed before and after this period to determine net growth, possibly associated with changes in the ecosystems. Alkalinity, carbon dioxide, dissolved oxygen, total hardness, nitrates, nitrites, pH, and bacteriological parameters were tested. Statistical analyses revealed that chemical parameters exist correlated with particular light levels. Changes in water chemistry could not be correlated with growth. Information obtained suggests light may affect growth of inhabiting Bettas but more information is needed to confirm this. Certain chemical parameters …

The Relationship Between Pond Bottom Type And Growth Rate Of Western Painted Turtles Chrysemys Picta Belli In Iowa, A Preliminary Report, Anthony J. Quinn, James L. Christiansen Jan 1972

The Relationship Between Pond Bottom Type And Growth Rate Of Western Painted Turtles Chrysemys Picta Belli In Iowa, A Preliminary Report, Anthony J. Quinn, James L. Christiansen

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Several populations of western painted turtles (Chrysemys picta belli) were sampled during 1970 to determine the possible relationship between turtle growth rate and type of pond substrate. The populations sampled were selected because they existed in lentic habitats that had either highly organic, mud substrates or relatively inorganic, sand substrates. Age determinations based on plastral annuli showed turtles from highly organic substrates to grow more rapidly than those from substrates with less apparent organic matter. Females attained greater size than males in both habitat extremes.

Spill Protection At Procter And Gamble's Iowa City Plant, H. E. Brown, W. S. Cameron, R. G. Bennett

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The Procter & Gamble Company has over 30 plants and mills engaged in the production of pulp and paper, soap and detergent, a large variety of food products and toilet goods throughout the United States. One form of pollution control facility that has been or will be installed in all these plants within the next two years is spill protection. The questions arise as to what is spill protection and why is it necessary? It is necessary to protect the environment since losses of materials by industry to waterways through accidents, mis-operations of equipment, or some form of mishap cause …

A Study Of Physics, Chemistry And Advanced Science Enrollments In Iowa's Area Ten With Reference To Enrollment Patterns In The State Of Iowa, Richard E. Mcqueen Jan 1972

A Study Of Physics, Chemistry And Advanced Science Enrollments In Iowa's Area Ten With Reference To Enrollment Patterns In The State Of Iowa, Richard E. Mcqueen

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

This study was initiated under the assumption that advanced science courses could be shown to detract from physics enrollments, thus establishing one possible cause of the continuously declining enrollments in physics in Iowa's Area Ten and nationwide. Initial work failing to support this relationship, a study of chemistry enrollments was added, chemistry enrollments being felt to be indicative of emphasis on science, with or without an advanced course. Information on enrollments in Area Ten was taken directly from teachers' responses to a questionnaire on such enrollments for 1969-70, received from all 43 public and seven parochial, private or special schools …
