The Distribution And Variation Of The Western Earth Snake, Virginia Valeriae Elegans (Kennicott) In Iowa, James L. Christiansen

Western earth snakes, Virginia valeriae elegans, were known in Iowa from only three specimens and considered very rare until the present study. Intense effort to find them in the last two years produced specimens from only the lower Des Moines and Chariton River drainages. The snakes were found to be closely associated with timbered, rocky terrain near streams and to be potentially endangered where timber is permanently removed. Sampling showed two geographic areas in the Des Moines River drainage inhabited by this snake; specimens from the two areas were very similar morphologically. A Comparison Of Unisensory Versus Multisensory Presentation And The Effectiveness Of Audition In The Initial Learning Stage, Jane Doornwaard Den Herder

The purpose of the present investigation was to evaluate the effectiveness of audition, in unisensory presentation and in bisensory or multisensory presentations, in the initial learning stage (short term memory). The study developed as a result of experience the investigator had with multimodal presentations of material. Upon viewing the rapid gains through that approach, questions were raised with regard to the validity of the position a unisensory auditory approach has always held for speech pathologists. The Effect Of Organic Solvents On The Sensitivity Of Rare Earths Atomic Absorption, Keith A. Geiken

Atomic absorption of the rare earths erbium, europium, and dysprosium was studied in 10% organic solvent-water systems, water miscible solvent-water systems, and in 100% solvent solutions of the metal acetylacetonates. Sensitivity was found to depend on the solvent system used and instrument parameters. All solvent systems used enhanced absorption, with (1) higher number of carbon atoms, (2) tertiary and secondary alcohols, and (3) high boiling point solvents producing the largest increase in absorption. No significant viscosity relationships existed in the 10% solvent-water systems for either miscible or partially soluble solvents; however, viscosity might have been a factor in absorption in …

Propylene Oxide Sterilization Of Microbiological Media In The High School Classroom, Marvin A. Andersen

The effective use of propylene oxide as a sterilizing agent has been demonstrated by many workers. Its use in the high school has been suggested but not studied. The intent of this work was to ascertain the feasibility of such an application. Preliminary experiments were performed to determine the most effective concentration of propylene oxide exposure in a closed system to achieve sterilization. For heavily contaminated plates a concentration of 2.0 ml/L of propylene oxide for twenty-four hours was found to be most effective. Comparison tests were made of both propylene oxide and pressure cooker sterilized nutrient agar. Sources of …

Herbert V. Hake attended graduate school at the University of Iowa, where he earned his master's degree in scenic design in 1933. In the summer of 1936, he began his career at the Iowa State Teachers College (ISTC) with the Theater Department. From 1938 to 1942 he served as technical director, scenic designer, and instructor of speech courses. He was a pioneer in radio and television.

Primary Productivity In Lake Red Haw, Lucas County, Iowa, Phyllis J. Kingsbury, Lynda D. Corkum, Paul D. Krause

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Primary production studies were conducted on an 83-acre lake in south central Iowa during the summer of 1970 and winter of 1971. Primary productivity was measured using the light­ dark bottle method. Summer values ranged from 2.74 to 6.25 grams of carbon assimilated/m2/day. This was correlated with water temperature, nitrate nitrogen, ortho phosphates, carbon dioxide, light penetration and plankton populations. Studies were continued during the winter using C14 and scintillation counting methods.

Project ASSIST (Alternatives for Schools of the Seventies for Improvement of Science Teaching) is a concept for statewide improvement of science education in Iowa. Science is broadly conceived to include mathematics, physical sciences, biological sciences, behavioral sciences, and social sciences. Cooperation among the various agencies and persons involved with education is central to the Project ASSIST concept.

This paper presents some practical suggestions for motivating the "educationally uninvolved" student on the one hand, and challenging the intellectually gifted student on the other. Teacher-planned, but student-oriented and directed, three courses geared to the pace of the individual student, are described. The net result of two of these courses as approached the past two years, is a reason- able degree of success leading to a strong acceptance on the part of the author of the basic philosophy of "Schools Without Failure.“ The third is a new plan to be introduced in the author's school in the fall of 1971.

Summary Of A 15-Month Biology Articulation Program Through Drake University, Everett Drevs

During the summer of 1970, a five-day workshop was held at Drake to begin our 15-month articulation program. Discussion of textbooks and their merits and identification of lab manuals used was our first consideration. Many sessions were held on the criteria for evaluation of biology programs and facilities, with a rating scale for our use developed after discussions on ideal conditions.
