The Distribution Of Fecal Coliforms In Catfish Creek, Dubuque County, Iowa, Bruce Kyles

A study of Fecal coliform distribution at the lower end of Catfish creek in Southern Dubuque County, Iowa was conducted from November 4 until December 30, 1970. The creek's mouth is approximately 1/4 mile below the outflow pipe of the Dubuque wastewater treatment plant on the Mississippi River. The plant presently has only primary treatment, but a new plant is scheduled to begin operation soon. This and subsequent studies will show the actual effect on the surrounding environment of introducing secondary treatment to a primary wastewater treatment plant. K-12 Science Education In Iowa: Did You Know That . . ., Lynn W. Glass

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The State is divided into 15 geographical areas for the improvement of education in Iowa schools. Each area has a local board of education and the authority to levy taxes. The total K-12 enrollment ranges from a low of 16,876 in Area XIV to a high of 136,719 in Area XI. In general, these 15 areas are of approximately the same geographical size.

Notes On Snail Feeding Behavior Of Anaxjunius (Drury): (Odonata), D. W. Sievers, A. C. Haman

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A naiad of Anax junius (Drury), in final instar, preyed upon 47 mature snails, Helisoma trivolvis (Say), during a period of 63 clays. The feeding behavior has potential significance: (1) with respect to biological control of trematode vectoring gastropods; (2) as a mechanism for vectoring trematodes between snails and birds; and (3) in interpreting structural adaptations and perception in immature oclonates.

A Mutation Limiting The Development Of Red Pigment In Betta Splendens, The Siamese Fighting Fish, Gene A. Lucas

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Evidence is provided for an undescribed mutation eliminating red pigment in Bettas. Genetic data suggest a recessive gene, symbolized "nr" (for non-red) is responsible. No evidence of linkage with the few previously described mutations in Bettas was found. Interaction with other color mutations provides an assortment of clearly distinguishable phenotypes.

Analysis Of Red And Yellow Pigments In Two Mutants Of The Siamese Fighting Fish, Betta Splendens, B. Katherine Royal, Gene A. Lucas

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Red and yellow pigments of two mutants of the Siamese Fighting Fish, Betta splendens, were analyzed. Chromatographic separations of integumentary material showed that reel mutants have reel pterin and carotenoid pigments. Yellow mutants have both types but not the same specific pigments.

Are The Nematodes Syngamus Trachea And Syngamus Merulae Synonymous?, Harold B. Bates Jr.

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Most criteria for differentiating species within the genus Syngamus have been found to be highly variable. Because of this high variability in morphological characteristics, some investigators feel that many of the species within the genus Syngamus are synonyms of S. trachea. Morphological and experimental studies were conducted to ascertain the taxonomic status of S. merulae. Both morphological and experin1ental data indicated that S. merulae should be maintained as a separate species.

Effects Of Ddt On The Density And Diversity Of Tardigrades, Gary W. Barrett, Ronald G. Kimmel

Twenty lichen-bearing tree bark samples were collected from DDT sprayed American elm trees (Ulmus Americana L.) in central Iowa. Twenty comparable samples were collected from an adjacent nontreated habitat. A tardigrade density of 4 individuals collected from the treated habitat was found to differ significantly (P < .01) from a density of 97 individuals collected from the non-treated area. Margalef's diversity index (D=S-1/1n N) determinations were found to be 0.00 and 0.44 for the treated and non-treated habitats, respectively. Tardigrade species organization within the nontreated habitat did not differ significantly from that as predicted by MacArthur's broken-stick model, suggesting that tardigrade species occupy contiguous, non-overlapping niches within a …

Bacteriological Quality Of Lake Red Rock And The Des Moines River Between Des Moines, Iowa, And Lake Red Rock, Dean A. Hoganson, Stephen C. Elliott

The bacteriological quality of the Des Moines River from Des Moines, Iowa, to Lake Red Rock and the lake itself were studied on eleven sampling dates from July 1969 to May 1970. The examined river sites consistently had higher EMB plate counts than sites in the lake proper and counts from both river and lake were generally far above quoted standards of water to be used for contact and non-contact water sports. The pH readings were all within quoted normal ranges. The expected effects of seasonal variation and runoff on bacteriological counts were found. Seven isolations of pathogenic, enteric bacteria …

A 1-G space-based centrifuge will be necessary before controlled, bio-medical weightlessness experiments can be performed. Some argue that centrifuges of prohibitive dimensions are necessary. Labyrinthectomized, hatchling, Red-Eared Turtles (Pseudemys scripta elegans) which had grown to a length of 45 mm at 5 G's (200 rpm 10 cm radius) displayed the same greater shell height (21.7 ± 0.4 vs, 20.0 ± 0.3 mm at 1 G) that was observed at 5 G's with nonlabyrinthectomized, centrifuged turtles. Biosystematic Evidence For Hybridization Between Lysimachia Quadriflora Sims And Lysimachia Hybrida Michaux (Primulaceae), Michael Owen Dillon

Putative hybrids between Lysimachia guadriflora and L. hybrida were discovered in a marsh in Dickinson County in northwest Iowa. No previous reports of interspecific hybridization between these species were found in the literature. Ecological barriers usually separate the parental species; however, at this population, disturbances by grazing animals and yearly fluctuations in the water level allow them to exist sympatrically. The parental species have concurrent flowering periods, similar floral morphology and pigmentation, and are pollinated by non-specific pollinators. The disturbances also provide a wide range of microhabitats intermediate to those of the parents. Thus, hybridization has resulted because of the …

An important part of using TV to teach centers around the use of the video tape recorder. A basic videotape recording unit consists of a videotape recorder, a playback monitor, a television camera and a microphone.

Integral to any discussion of the VTR is an investigation of the different aspects of using television for educational purposes. The first step in this paper, therefore, will be a careful exploration of the advantages and disadvantages of television and, indirectly, videotaping, in secondary education.

Mosquito populations of Black Hawk County, Iowa, were studied during the summers of 1970 and 1971. The primary sampling technique was the New Jersey light trap with supplementary collections of biting adults to determine species of importance to man. Twenty-two species of mosquitoes were collected in the county. This represents ten species more than had been previously reported from Black Hawk County. Information is presented on the relative abundance and seasonal succession of each species. Aedes vexans (Meigen) and A. trivittatus (Coquillett) were the primary pests of man, occurring from June through August. Aedes sticticus (Meigen) ranked as the third …

The problem of the investigation concerned itself with the effect of preschool experiences on the achievement of the kindergarten children enrolled in the 1971-1972 Follow Through Program in Waterloo, Iowa, which used the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, model of individually prescribed instruction. The study explored the effects of preschool experience upon kindergarten males and females as contrasted to the male and female kindergarten children without preschool experience.

Two conceptual constructs gave direction and provided the rationale for this study. The first conceptual construct provided research related to early childhood education presented according to the Geneticist, Environmentalist, and the Interactionalist's positions. The second …

The Effects Of Estrogen On Ionized Calcium In Ovariectomized Calciphylactic Rats, Edward Luverne Hatcher

This research was an attempt to discover the relationship between estrogen treatment and the serum calcium levels in ovariectomized rats. An attempt was also made to study the possible effects of estrogen on calcium deposition during the calcification process by utilizing the calciphylaxis phenomena as a potential biological model. Concentrations of ionized and total calcium in the serum of ovariectomized rats were measured utilizing a calcium selective electrode system and atomic absorption spectroscopy procedures respectively.
