Detection Of Isocitrate Lyase In Achlya Flagellata, Joanne Tontz Ellzey, Christina D. Chavez

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The colorimetric procedure of McFadden and Howes (1960) and the enzyme assay for isocitrate lyase (Shiio, Shiio, and McFadden, 1965) gave positive results for the presence of isocitrate lyase in Achlya flagellata oogonial cultures. This enzyme is an indicator of the glyoxylate pathway (metabolism of lipids to carbohydrates). Further work is in progress to determine if there is a correlation between isocitrate lyase and the microbodies of oogonial initials.

Cyclic Patterns Of Central Florida Sooty Molds, D. R. Reynolds, B. R. Pohlad

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Monographic work (Reynolds, 1970; Reynolds, 197la; Reynolds, 197lb) suggests that sooty molds exhibit distinct cyclic patterns of growth and reproduction. Furthermore, a tally of collection data recorded in other monographic work (Batista and Ciferri, 1962; Batista and Ciferri, 1963a) suggests that the sexual fruit bodies of ascomycetous neotropical sooty molds are prevalent during the drier season of the year. Asexual sooty molds may also occur seasonally (Batista and Ciferri, 1963b). A study was begun approximately two years ago to determine the reproductive unit frequency of select sooty molds at various times of the year.

The Identification Of Yeasts From Clinical Material, Leila J. Walker, Marguerite R. Luecke

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A workable, practical scheme for the identification of yeasts isolated from clinical specimens is presented. Relationships between medically important sexual stages and imperfect forms, and characteristics of the sexual stages in clinical material, are described. Included in this report is a guide to yeast identification which relies on the Luecke plate, a modified Dalmau plate.

Spore Cleavage And The Development Of Wall Ornamentation In Two Myxomycetes, Henry C. Aldrich

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Processes of spore cleavage, spine deposition, and continuous wall formation have been followed in Didymium iridis and Physarum flavicomum, using electron microscopy combined with cytochemistry. The periodic acid silver hexamine (PASH) technique for demonstration of polysaccharide at the ultrastructural level has been employed. Developing sporangia were fixed at 30 min. intervals. Six hours after plasmodia form noticeable blebs on the agar, the surface membrane begins to invaginate and cleaves out spores. Flattened cytoplasmic vesicles originating from dictyosomes contribute membrane to the cleavage furrows as they grow centripetally. As soon as the spores have been cleaved, spine formation begins. An apparatus is described which has been useful in classroom demonstrations and for research in metabolic studies of mice. The unique feature of this modification of basic metabolators is a standard taper ground glass joint.

White Leghorn Egg Production During Traffic-Noise Stress, Albert Kagan, Charles J. Ellis

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Two groups of white leghorn hens were subjected to 95 db (C) level of traffic noise and 65 db (C) level of ambient non-traffic noise. No statistically significant difference in egg production was detected between the two groups.

Jean L. Laffoon, Professor of Zoology and Entomology at Iowa State University, died January 19, 1973, in Ames, Iowa, after a brief illness.

Dr. Laffoon was born in Sioux City Iowa on August 19 1922. He graduated from Central High School, Sioux Citv, in 1939 and was awarded a B.S. degree in biology from Morningside College in 1942. In the fall of that year he entered the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, but withdrew to volunteer for service in the United States Navy. Upon his discharge, three years later, he enrolled in the Graduate College at Iowa State University, where …

Food Habits, Growth And Distribution Of Larval Walleye, Stizostedion Vitreum Vitreum (Mitchill), In Clear Lake, Iowa, Vernon L. Spykerman

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Larval walleye were collected in Clear Lake, Iowa, during May and June, 1972, to determine their food habits, growth and distribution while in the pelagic stage. Larvae were pelagic until early June, and then moved into littoral areas of the lake. During the pelagic stage, larvae exhibited vertical movement toward the surface at night and to deeper zones during the day. Mean total body length of larvae was 9 mm on May 13 and 32.6 mm on June 8. Feeding commenced when larvae reached 9 mm in length. Cladocera and Copepoda comprised 94.6 percent of the total number of food …

During the summer of 1972, eighteen species of mosquitoes were collected in Black Hawk Park, Cedar Falls, Iowa, using a New Jersey light trap, a Communicable Disease Center (CDC) miniature light trap baited with dry ice, an unbaited Malaise trap and a biting collection. Collections were made concurrently with the dual purpose of investigating trap biases for various species of mosquitoes captured and analyzing the effects of temperature, rainfall, relative humidity, barometric pressure, light intensity, and moonphase on the flight activity of female Aedes vexans (Meigen). The purposes of this study were: (1) to develop Audio-Visual-Tutorial (AVT) materials to supplement the teaching of Accounting I at the community college level and (2) to compare the results obtained in an experimental group using two units of AVT materials with a control group attending regular lecture sessions.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the transfer of learning between fine and gross motor skill after practice on similar mirror reversal tasks. Transfer of learning would seem to imply that the learning of either type of skill, fine or gross, may facilitate the learning of the other. This study utilized a quasi-experimental, pre-post, three group design, Subjects were male and female volunteers from junior and senior high schools in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Germination Ecology Of Five Chihuahuan Desert Winter Annuals, Andreas George Christou

Seeds of five winter annuals, Eschscholzia mexicana Greene, Eriogonum abertianum Torr. var. abertianum Torr., Eriogonum abertianum Torr. var. ruberrimum Gandoger, Eriogonum rotundifolium Benth., and Eriogonum trichopes Torr., native to the Chihuahuan Desert, were tested for their germination responses relative to constant and fluctuating temperatures, light and dark sensitivity, and innate dormancy. The effects of aqueous leachates from Larrea tridentata (DC.) Cov., on germination and initial hypocotyl growth of the above Eriogonum taxa were also investigated. Eriogonum taxa germinated at constant temperatures ranging from 6° to 20°c, although their optima were at 10° and 13°c. E. trichopes showed highest germination in …
