Interdisciplinary Environmental Education Program For Teachers, James E. Murphy Jan 1973

Interdisciplinary Environmental Education Program For Teachers, James E. Murphy

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Environmental education offers a unique opportunity for innovative teaching because no one is around to say, "But, I always did it this way." Thus new environmental programs do not have to overcome the educational inertia of tradition which has stopped many new instructional movements dead in their tracks.

Environmental Education: No Passing Fad, Frederick P. Deluca Jan 1973

Environmental Education: No Passing Fad, Frederick P. Deluca

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Environmental education has received increased attention during the past four years. Most of the fifty states have formulated or are in the process of formulating a state plan for environmental education. Elementary and secondary school curricula continue to reflect increased concern and activity in environmental education. Higher education has responded with modification of traditional courses, design and implementation of new courses, and at some institutions, new degree programs in environmental studies. Interest has not been restricted to the physical and biological sciences; people in social sciences and humanities on all levels have participated and in many instances have been at …

The Fecal Coliform/Fecal Streptococcus Ratio As A Measure Of Bacterial Contamination And Indicator Of Its Source In The Des Moines River, Karen E. Messley, Phyllis J. Kingsbury Jan 1973

The Fecal Coliform/Fecal Streptococcus Ratio As A Measure Of Bacterial Contamination And Indicator Of Its Source In The Des Moines River, Karen E. Messley, Phyllis J. Kingsbury

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The fecal coliform/fecal streptococcus (FC/FS) ratio and total coliform test were used in attempts to determine the degree and source of bacterial contamination present in the Des Moines River between April 18 and November 14, 1970. There were no predictable changes in the FC/FS ratio as the river passed from a rural area, through a metropolitan district, and on to another rural area; however, the total coliform counts did show variation with distance. The failure of the FC/FS ratio to indicate source of contamination was probably due to the highly varying external conditions acting upon the river.

Fauna Of The Middle Little Sioux River And Comparison With Upper And Lower Regions, Clair G. Rausch, Richard V. Bovbjerg Jan 1973

Fauna Of The Middle Little Sioux River And Comparison With Upper And Lower Regions, Clair G. Rausch, Richard V. Bovbjerg

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A species list of macroscopic animals is compiled for the middle portion of the Little Sioux River, Iowa. These are tabulated along with published data from regions of the river above and below. The Little Sioux meanders throughout a valley of largely agricultural landscape; it has a relatively high silt load. Chemical differences are not great; some effects of municipal effluent are noted. The number of species is relatively constant (in the 40-60 range); numbers in the uppermost, intermittent stretches and the lowermost, channelized segment are lower (30- 40). Only about 20% of the species are ubiquitous; trends of diversity …

Comparison Of Vertebrate Communities Of Coralville Reservoir And Cone Marsh, Iowa, William J. Platt Jan 1973

Comparison Of Vertebrate Communities Of Coralville Reservoir And Cone Marsh, Iowa, William J. Platt

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The vertebrates in communities comprising a habitat with unpredictable water levels (the Coralville Reservoir) were compared to those present in communities comprising a habitat without severely fluctuating water levels (Cone Marsh). From data on the species of vertebrates and their relative abundance, it was determined that extensive ecosystem simplification had occurred in communities along the Coralville Reservoir. The major characteristics of this simplification were the following: 1) several species with similar modes of feeding were present at Cone Marsh but only species with generalized food habits were present along the Coralville Reservoir; 2) species at the top of food chains …
