A new protoplasmodial species of the genus Licea is reported from dung of herbivorous animals. It is differentiated from all other species in the genus except one by a smooth shiny black peridium; from L. fimicola Dearness and Bisby it differs by sporangial shape and spore characters.

A Tribute To Professor Alexopoulos, Robert G. Franke Jan 1974

A Tribute To Professor Alexopoulos, Robert G. Franke

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This issue of the Proceedings began to take form on June 17, 1973, at the University of Massachusetts when many of the former students of Professor Alexopoulos gathered to present him and Mrs. Alexopoulos with a "day of appreciation." The reading of scientific papers written by his students, the banquet that evening, and the preparation of this issue of the Proceedings which includes those papers was an honor for all of us because it provided an opportunity to express our appreciation to our warmly admired teacher. That the Board of the Iowa Academy of Science, especially the Editorial …

A Monarch Butterfly Roosting Tree In Iowa, Mary Swander Jan 1974

A Monarch Butterfly Roosting Tree In Iowa, Mary Swander

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Monarch butterflies, Danaus plexippus, yearly roost by the thousands in certain trees during their southward autumn migration. A study of a roosting tree in Manning, Iowa, suggests that monarchs originally chose the tree for the characteristics of its maple leaves and its physical location and proximity to nectar-producing flowers. It is thought that later generations of monarchs were drawn to the tree by a combination of a residual sex attractant odor and favorable wind conditions.

Influence Of Blue-Green Algae On The Ph And Buffer Capacity Of Culture Media, Ruth B. Wildman, Barbara L. Benner, Douglas D. Held, Charles W. Schauberger Jan 1974

Influence Of Blue-Green Algae On The Ph And Buffer Capacity Of Culture Media, Ruth B. Wildman, Barbara L. Benner, Douglas D. Held, Charles W. Schauberger

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Three strains of the blue-green algae Anabaena cylindrica, Anacystis nidulans and Nostoc muscorum are able to adjust the pH of culture medium from stress levels (pH 4-6) to levels favorable for growth (pH 7-10). Over a period of one week, these strains increased the buffer capacity of their media with time. The pH of maximum buffer capacity after one week was very close to the pK2 of phosphoric acid. Algae grown in a medium initially buffered with Na2CO3 shifted the pH of maximum buffer capacity from the pK of carbonic acid to that of phosphoric acid.

Thermal Structure Of Clear Lake, Iowa, Roger W. Bachmann, Theodore V. Jacobsen Jan 1974

Thermal Structure Of Clear Lake, Iowa, Roger W. Bachmann, Theodore V. Jacobsen

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Summer water temperatures in the shallow areas of Clear Lake were slightly higher and had a greater daily range than temperatures measured in the limnetic zone. The lake was not thermally stratified, although small differences sometimes were found between surface and bottom temperatures at the deepest point. Temperatures measured in the Clear Lake Water Treatment Plant were representative of those measured in the limnetic zone of the lake and provide a useful index of temperature conditions in the lake as a whole. The average annual temperature curve is asymmetrical, with the highest temperature falling on August 5 and the lowest …

Limnological Features Of Some Northwestern Iowa Lakes, John R. Jones, Roger W. Bachmann Jan 1974

Limnological Features Of Some Northwestern Iowa Lakes, John R. Jones, Roger W. Bachmann

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Quantitative information on the morphology, watershed characteristics, water transparency, water chemistry and algal crops of six Iowa lakes is summarized. Lake West Okoboji had less oxygen present in the hypolimnion in 1950-1973 than in 1919-1928, indicating an increase in eutrophication. On the basis of increasing plant-nutrient concentrations, increasing summer algal standing crops and decreasing water transparency, the lakes can be ranked thus: Lake West Okoboji, Big Spirit Lake, Lake East Okoboji (including Upper Gar and Minnewashta) and Lower Gar Lake. These differences among lakes are related to the ratio of watershed area to lake volume, which controls the impact of …

Bacteria Of Foods And Utensils In The Luther College Food Service, Decorah, Iowa, Marilyn Peitso, Cheryl Anderson, John Tjostem Jan 1974

Bacteria Of Foods And Utensils In The Luther College Food Service, Decorah, Iowa, Marilyn Peitso, Cheryl Anderson, John Tjostem

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Total bacteria counts were obtained from precooked frozen entrees and other frozen food items. All the counts were well below federal and state recommended limits. Total bacteria counts were also obtained from representative food preparation surfaces and utensils. While most counts were below acceptable limits, the fiberglass cafeteria trays showed counts substantially above the limits. Normal wear eventually exposes the fibrous tray interior, allowing accumulation of soluble foodstuffs and rapid multiplication of bacteria. Worn fiberglass cafeteria trays should be recognized as a potential health hazard.

A Study Of The Attitudes Of Iowa Junior High Media Specialists Concerning Sex And Sexuality Materials In The Media Center, Elizabeth Campbell Jan 1974

A Study Of The Attitudes Of Iowa Junior High Media Specialists Concerning Sex And Sexuality Materials In The Media Center, Elizabeth Campbell

Graduate Research Papers

This research was undertaken as a study of attitudes toward sex and sexuality materials and their availability and use in junior high media centers. Several basic assumptions were accepted before the study began. The first assumption: the Media Center best serves the school by maintaining a wide selection of media at different levels of ability and interest, and a large portion of these materials are selected to support the school's curricular objectives. The second assumption: if the Media Center is truly serving the school, the Media Specialist must be providing up to date and vital information concerning adolescent sexuality. A …

Binucleate Tapetum In Two Species Of Lysimachia (Primulaceae), Nels R. Lersten, Lawrence J. Eilers

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A binucleate tapetum occurs in L. hybrida Michx. and L. quadriflora Sims, based on Iowa material. Conclusions of Wunderlich (1954) and Davis (1966) are incomplete and are discussed. Primulaceae is the 12th family of angiosperms with uninucleate as well as bi- or multinucleate taxa.

The Effects Of Stimulants On The Pulse Rate, Darrell Young Jan 1974

The Effects Of Stimulants On The Pulse Rate, Darrell Young

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

A recent article in Science by Maugh II (1973), dealing with the possible relationship between coffee and heart disease, inspired me to develop and execute a laboratory exercise designed to measure the effects of stimulants on the body. This exercise was, of course, designed to only measure immediate short-term effects, since long-term effects are obviously more difficult to measure.

Piaget And Science Teaching, Frederick P. De Luca Jan 1974

Piaget And Science Teaching, Frederick P. De Luca

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Piaget's life is as interesting as his theory of intellectual development He was born in France in 1896, published his first article at the age of 11, completed his Ph.D. degree in biology at the age of 21, and subsequently devoted his efforts to study, research and teaching in the psychology of intellectual development. Initially he was interested in exploring the idea that intellectual development resulted from adaptation of the individual to his environment, a concept involving a combination of biology and psychology. As his research progressed, however, he found it necessary to incorporate ideas from the disciplines of formal …

NSTA headquarters and staff recently moved out of the NEA Building into their own home at Connecticut Avenue and S Street NW. The Georgian-style building is conveniently located downtown where public transportation is available, and parking facilities are nearby. The spacious mansion has a large conference room suitable for committee meetings. Owning its own headquarters symbolizes NSTA's ability to build an identity as an independent organization and its hope to intensify the feeling of active membership on the part of science teachers.

Actual Teaching Assignments Call For Broader Pre-Service Training For Chemistry-Physics Teachers, Robert W. Hanson

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Full-time physics teachers are rare in Iowa's high schools-information on record with the Iowa Department of Public Instruction indicates that there are only eleven in the entire state. Full-time chemistry teachers are not much more common-the records show that there are 33 in Iowa. The most common combination involving physics includes chemistry, with 62.5 percent of all physics teachers teaching chemistry and 52.5 percent of all chemistry teachers teaching physics. Most of the 240 teachers who teach both subjects teach a third subject as well. Tables 1 and 2 show the numbers of teaching combinations that include chemistry or physics …

Effects Of Estrogen And Progesterone On Serum Ionized And Total Calcium In Ovariectomized Rats, Edward L. Hatcher, Robert J. Simpson Jan 1974

Effects Of Estrogen And Progesterone On Serum Ionized And Total Calcium In Ovariectomized Rats, Edward L. Hatcher, Robert J. Simpson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The effects of estrogen and estrogen plus progesterone on the serum ionized calcium levels were studied in ovariectomized rats. Concentrations of total and ionized calcium were measured in the serum of rats following three- and six-day treatments with estrogen (01μg daily). Concentrations of ionized calcium in estrogen- treated ovariectomized rats were significantly higher than in controls and significantly higher values were noted in the ionized: total serum calcium ratios in estrogen treated rats as compared with controls. The addition of progesterone to the estrogen treatment procedure resulted in increased total and ionized serum calcium with the ionized values remaining …

The Flora Of Brush Creek Canyon State Preserve, Lawrence J. Eilers Jan 1974

The Flora Of Brush Creek Canyon State Preserve, Lawrence J. Eilers

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Brush Creek Canyon State Preserve is a scenic natural area in Fayette County, Iowa. The preserve contains steep, wooded ravines; tall, vertical outcrops of dolomitic limestone; clear streams; cascades area; and cool springs. These habitats support a variety of native plant communities, resulting in a rich flora of at least 268 species of vascular plants. Man-made disturbance is minimal, and there are several species of rare plants that increase the importance of the preserve.
