A Correlational Study Between Piagetian Concrete Reasoning Level And Academic Achievement, Mark Anthony Randall Jan 1982

A Correlational Study Between Piagetian Concrete Reasoning Level And Academic Achievement, Mark Anthony Randall

Graduate Research Papers

Jean Piaget has been identified as one of the great contributors to knowledge in our time. Robinson (1952) lists him in his book, 100 Most Important People in the World Today. During his life he developed the learning theories of genetic epistemology that brought him recognition as the father of modern child psychology. During countless hours of observations performed by him personally, he developed clinical interviewing techniques to reveal the cognitive developmental level of a child. Similarly, all educators are concerned with cognitive development of the learner. The Piagetian clinical interviews glean information on the subject ability to process information …

Brain Growth: Intuitive And Scientific, Karen Marie Patterson Jan 1982

Brain Growth: Intuitive And Scientific, Karen Marie Patterson

Graduate Research Papers

Developmental processes of the brain have long been considered the last frontier by scientists as well as educators. There has been much speculation concerning how and when the mind grows and if intellectual growth appears at the same time the skull and brain are physiologically and neurologically growing. Prior to recent research many educators assumed that learning, or intellectual advancement, occurred in an almost continuous manner. Educators felt children built skill upon skill and constantly moved from one stage of cognitive development to the next higher level of cognitive development. Traditionally, educational systems have been based on this concept of …

An Engineer Looks At The Creationist Movement, John W. Patterson Jan 1982

An Engineer Looks At The Creationist Movement, John W. Patterson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This paper is based on a presentation given in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to the Iowa Academy of Sciences on Saturday, April 25, 1981. The observations are derived from the extensive interactions I've had with creationists and anti-creationists over the past 3 to 4 years. These interactions include written correspondence, careful evaluation of manuscripts and published papers, many conversations, attendance at hearings and debates on creationism, and participation in two creation/evolution debates. The opinions expressed are my own, not those of my university or department.

The Gastropods Of Lake West Okoboji, Iowa, Twenty Years Later, Richard V. Bovbjerg, Roger L. Dusil, Rebecca L. Broer Jan 1982

The Gastropods Of Lake West Okoboji, Iowa, Twenty Years Later, Richard V. Bovbjerg, Roger L. Dusil, Rebecca L. Broer

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The snails of Lake West Okoboji were collected at the same 53 stations, using the same techniques and with equivalent effort as in a study 20 years earlier. The total number of snails collected was very similar. The same 12 species are present. The relative densities of the 8 major species have shifted strikingly, with a decrease in the more pollution tolerant pulmonates and concomitant increase in the less tolerant gilled species. The number of species per station has increased throughout the lake. The decline in the gastropod fauna appears to have been halted, probably due to the completion of …

A Survey Of The Benthic Macroinvertebrates Of The Upper Iowa River Basin, Murray L. Meierhoff, Scott D. Prill Jan 1982

A Survey Of The Benthic Macroinvertebrates Of The Upper Iowa River Basin, Murray L. Meierhoff, Scott D. Prill

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The benthic macroinvertebrates of the Upper Iowa River basin in extreme northeastern Iowa were sampled in late April and mid July 1980. There were distinct population trends and differences between the April and July samples and also between the 14 mainstream and the 6 tributary stations. The benthic macroinvertebrates in and immediately downstream from Decorah indicated severe water quality degradation. The problem was limited, as the expected composition returned only a few kilometers downstream. A total of 149 taxa were collected.

The Tiger Salamander, Michael J. Lannoo Jan 1982

The Tiger Salamander, Michael J. Lannoo

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Tiger salamanders are harmless members of the Class Amphibia which easily lend themselves to observation and experimentation. As the name amphibian implies, these salamanders have two life forms, an aquatic larval stage and a terrestrial adult stage. Both forms are common and widespread throughout Iowa, yet adults, being terrestrial and less seasonal, are encountered more frequently than the larvae.

An Annotated Bibliography And Subject Index On Female Reproductive Anatomy And Fertilization In Angiosperms, Varien R. Tilton, Nels R. Lersten

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This bibliographical compilation is in two parts. One is coupled with a tabulated subject index of works on female reproductive anatomy and fertilization in angiosperms. It emphasizes papers published between 1965 and 1980, but a few citations predating 1966 are included. Although some entries are primarily methodological works, papers dealing strictly with experimental techniques, apomixis per se, incompatibility per se, floral morphology per se, teratological papers, abstracts, theses, and dissertations, have been omitted intentionally. The second bibliography encompasses theoretical discussions, broad summaries, review papers, books, other secondary sources, and some primary references covering a wide taxonomic range. It is indexed …

Understanding The Significance Of Creationism: Historical And Cultural Perspectives - A Symposium, Stanley L. Weinberg Jan 1982

Understanding The Significance Of Creationism: Historical And Cultural Perspectives - A Symposium, Stanley L. Weinberg

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This symposium consists of the published versions of papers that were presented in the course of a conference on the significance of creationism, held as part of the 93rd session of the Iowa Academy of Science. The session had its venue at Coe College, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in April, 1981. The time and place of the symposium are significant.

Iowa has been the focus-for reasons that are unclear-of a major effort of the creationist movement to install its doctrines in the state's public schools.' Since 1977, eight creationist bills have been introduced in the Iowa legislature; none has passed. Efforts-some …

Unusual Beach Deposits In Oolite Carbonate Environments Mississippian And Recent, A. J. Gerk, C. O. Levorson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Thousands of small fossils were collected from unusual lenses within the Cyathophyllum Zone, Gilmore City Limestone (Mississippian) in a large quarry near Humboldt, Iowa. These rare lenses occur in an interval 1-2.5m thick that shows an extreme variability of facies. An intensive search of other Gilmore City outcrops revealed no similar lenses. The rest of the interval, outside the lenses, contained larger fossils and fossil fragments. The small fossils in the lenses are remarkably well preserved, the gastropods particularly so. Comparison of the Gilmore City Limestone with Recent oolitic deposits at Paradise Island in the Bahamas leads to the conclusion …

Factors Influencing Hoop Net Catches In Channel Habitats Of Pool 9, Upper Mississippi River, Wayne A. Hubert, Dennis N. Schmitt Jan 1982

Factors Influencing Hoop Net Catches In Channel Habitats Of Pool 9, Upper Mississippi River, Wayne A. Hubert, Dennis N. Schmitt

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The catch per unit of effort and species selectivity of two hoop net types fished in channel habitats of Pool 9 were described. Variation in catch was noted between the two net types, as well as between sampling areas and channel types. The total catch with bait nets was 580 fish in the main channel border and 539 in side channels, while buffalo nets captured 1,213 fish from the main channel border and 1,004 from side channels with the same amount of fishing effort. Six species comprised 93% of the bait net samples: shorthead redhorse, black crappie, freshwater drum, flathead …

Annual Report Of The Iowa Academy Of Science 1981-82, Robert W. Hanson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Late in 1974, this writer completed the 100-year history of the Iowa Academy of Science. It appeared in the Proceedings in March, 1975, along with a history of the Parish farm, written by H. T. Horner. That issue was the Centennial issue of the Proceedings. Since that time, this Annual Report has been a running history of the Academy, dealing with the highlights of the most important activities of the Academy each year to provide a record for the future. The report for 1981-82 is based on Board of Directors minutes, committee reports, etc., on file in the Academy office …

Seasonal Variation Of Tremetol Concentrations Found In White Snakeroot, Eupatorium Rugosum Houtt (Compositae), Gerald W. Kaufmann

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

White snakeroot is a perennial composite whose foliage is poisonous to livestock. The poison is an unidentified substance contained in a mixture called tremetol. Most cases of poisoning occurred in late summer, and it was presumed livestock were forced to eat the plants because of a dearth of forage. Field observations indicate cattle will voluntarily eat white snakeroot and perhaps the plant varies seasonally in toxicity. Preliminary bioassy using minnows (Notropis spp.) exposed to extracts of plants gathered monthly in 1977 indicated the plants were most toxic in July and August. Tremetol was extracted from plants gathered monthly in 1978. …
