The Medical Laboratory Technician Program, Joyce Timson Jan 1982

The Medical Laboratory Technician Program, Joyce Timson

Graduate Research Papers

In light of a decision by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists to discontinue national certification of laboratory assistants, Hawkeye Institute of Technology must determine the future of its Medical Laboratory Assistant program. Available options include the following: a) continue the one-year program b) replace the one-year program with a two year Medical Laboratory Technician program c) discontinue the one-year program with no replacement. This report examines each option within the context of the current state of medical laboratory education, manpower needs, and employability of program graduates. Development of a Medical Laboratory Technician program is proposed as the most practical …

Epibionts From The Cerro Gordo Member Of The Lime Creek Formation (Upper Devonian), Rockford, Iowa, Wayne I. Anderson, Kartherine Dimitracopoulos Megivern Jan 1982

Epibionts From The Cerro Gordo Member Of The Lime Creek Formation (Upper Devonian), Rockford, Iowa, Wayne I. Anderson, Kartherine Dimitracopoulos Megivern

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Epibionts and borings are common on brachiopods from the Cerro Gordo Member of the Lime Creek Formation (Upper Devonian) at Rockford, Iowa. Occurrences and distributions of epibionts are best explained by attachment and subsequent growth on either living or dead brachiopods. Distribution of Spirorbis, a calcareous worm tube, is best explained by random attachment of worm larvae on living or dead brachiopods. Cornulites, a conical shell of uncertain affinity, commonly occurs with its aperture oriented toward the anterior commissure of brachiopods, suggesting attachment to living shells and subsequent growth in response to the feeding currents of the brachiopod. Some tabulate …

Anti-Evolutionism And The Effects Of The Scopes Trial, John R. Cole Jan 1982

Anti-Evolutionism And The Effects Of The Scopes Trial, John R. Cole

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In 1925 John T. Scopes was convicted of the crime of teaching evolution in violation of a new Tennessee law. The circus-like trial has been regarded by many observers as a rite de passage for twentieth century attitudes-although Scopes was convicted, his trial held anti-evolutionism up to wide public ridicule, and his $100 fine was in fact overturned on a technicality upon appeal.

A Calcium-Phosphate-Phospholipid Complex Extracted From Rats Exhibiting Calciphylactic Nephrocalcinosis, Elaine Bardes Haynes Jan 1982

A Calcium-Phosphate-Phospholipid Complex Extracted From Rats Exhibiting Calciphylactic Nephrocalcinosis, Elaine Bardes Haynes

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Calciphylactic nephrocalcinosis was induced in female Sprague Dawley rats by treatment with dihydrotachysterol (0.5 mg/100g body weight) and thallous acetate (2 mg/100 g body weight). A calcium-phosphatephospholipid complex was isolated from rat kidneys exhibiting calciphylactic nephrocalcinosis and from untreated controls. There was a statistically significant greater quantity of complex extractable after calciphylaxis was induced. An average of 8.0% of the total phospholipid extracted from the tissue was present in complexed form in treated animals and 3.7 % in control animals. The phospholipid component of the complex was identified as phosphatidyl serine. The ratio of calcium to phosphate was less than …

The Effects Of Two Color Conditions On Muscular Strength In Trained And Untrained College Males And Females, Mary Jane Asimus Jan 1982

The Effects Of Two Color Conditions On Muscular Strength In Trained And Untrained College Males And Females, Mary Jane Asimus

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of three color conditions on handgrip strength and shoulder abduction strength in trained and untrained college males and females. It has been suggested that differences in electromagnetic properities [sic] under exposure to visual stimuli (color) may affect muscular strength throughout the body. Subjects consisted of forty male and forty female volunteers from the University of Northern Iowa. Six different treatments were administered to all subjects. Maximal strength exertion under all conditions (normal, blue and pink) was measured with a cable tensiometer. Statistical analysis revealed significant main effects on the SEX …

Assessment Of The Science Programs In The Elementary Schools Of Area Six, Paul Eckerman Jan 1981

Assessment Of The Science Programs In The Elementary Schools Of Area Six, Paul Eckerman

Graduate Research Papers

A new generation of scientifically literate citizens is needed to cope with a future characterized by rapid change and a complex set of technical and ethical questions. Accordingly, it is recommended that all students receive an appropriate education in science to develop the intellectual skills that are basic to critical observation problem resolution, decision-making and valuing. The elementary science student of today lives in a science-oriented culture. He/she needs a science curriculum designed to be adequate in concept and purpose to face his future in the scientific-technological-industrial society. The goals of the elementary science curriculum must keep pace with the …

Due To Technical Difficulties Jan 1981

Due To Technical Difficulties

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The worst thing about a burning issue is that no one can smell it until there's a fire. We all spend our days deeply engrossed in ourselves, noses pressed to the grindstone. Who can see anything in that position? Then, something ignites a spark - and, suddenly, everyone calls "Fire!"

Chemistry Curricula: Past, Present, And Future, Robert W. Hanson

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

At the University of Northern Iowa we have four so-called "Current Curricula" courses - one each in junior high science, biology, chemistry, and physics. Each is preceded in the teaching degree programs by a course called "Orientation to Science Teaching." Most students who take these Current Curricula courses are juniors or seniors and have had at least part of their professional sequence in the College of Education.

Some Ethical Considerations Concerning The Use Of Live Animals In Biology Experiments, David F. Treagust Jan 1981

Some Ethical Considerations Concerning The Use Of Live Animals In Biology Experiments, David F. Treagust

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

As biology teachers we are continually faced with decisions regarding the use of experiments in order to identify, investigate, clarify or illustrate a particular concept or concepts. If an experiment is to be performed we frequently have to decide whether to use live animals, preserved animal specimens, preserved animal organs, fresh animal organs (from, say, the butcher), tissue cultures, audio-visual simulations or even class members as the subjects. Many students, and indeed many teachers, have been reticent about their acceptance of experimenting with live, or freshly killed animals; frequently the issue is settled by reference to such work being in …

Statement Of The Position Of The Iowa Academy Of Science On The Status Of Creationism As A Scientific Explanation Of Natural Phenomena Jan 1981

Statement Of The Position Of The Iowa Academy Of Science On The Status Of Creationism As A Scientific Explanation Of Natural Phenomena

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Current attempts to introduce 'scientific creationism' into the science classroom are strongly opposed by the Iowa Academy of Science on the grounds that creationism when called 'scientific' is a religious doctrine posed as science. It is contrary to the nature of science to propose supernatural explanations of natural events or their origins. With its appeal to the supernatural, creationism is outside the realm of science.
