Is School Science An Endangered Species?, Jack Gerlovich, Thomas Budnik

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

2. Is school science

A recent National Science Foundation report warns that the United States faces immediate shortages of engineers and computer professionals; it also sees a trend "toward virtual scientific and technological illiteracy in the population at large."(12)

Science News reported that the nation's commitment to excellence and international primacy in science and mathematics has waned markedly over the past 15 years. Not only the scientific community, but the nation as a whole, will suffer if drastic changes aren't made quickly. In an age when scientific and technical literacy is becoming increasingly necessary to function in our society, increasing …

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

In November, 1978 my advanced biology class received a research grant through the Wisconsin Junior Academy's (WJA) Student-Teacher Integrated Research (STIR) Program. Funding for the program was provided by the Wisconsin Academy of Science, Arts, and Letters-Youth Program and by the American Association for the Advancement of Science. The basic purpose of STIR is to promote quality high school science and social science research by sponsoring grants which can be used to purchase equipment and supplies.

Aerospace Education Council Of Iowa, Kenneth W. Sand Jan 1982

Aerospace Education Council Of Iowa, Kenneth W. Sand

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Few people know that there is an Aerospace Education Council of Iowa, though it is entering its 25th year of existence. On December 17, 1956, almost a year before Sputnik, Iowa established an Air-Age Education Council under the auspices of the State Department of Public Instruction. This organization was to sponsor appropriate research, suggest needed curriculum change, and encourage the incorporation of air-age information in all areas of the curriculum, particularly in the social, physical and natural sciences.

The frog for many people represents a most memorable event of their high school days. But the frog soon may be a thing of the past in the high school biology class. There is a growing frog shortage.

Communication By Writing: A Basic Part Of Science Education, Donald L. Schmidt, Robert S. Tapply Jan 1982

Communication By Writing: A Basic Part Of Science Education, Donald L. Schmidt, Robert S. Tapply

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

No responsible educator would deny that an educated person should have the ability to express himself in writing. One must not lose sight of this basic idea when teaching science. Far too often, science students communicate through definitions, symbols and technical terminology without making the attempt to combine a series of meaningful phrases which communicate an individual's understanding of science in a comprehensible way. The responsibility for teaching communication by writing in science rests clearly with the science teacher, who must develop strategies within the framework of the discipline to involve students in the process of writing.

Let Me Out, Cherin Lee Jan 1982

Let Me Out, Cherin Lee

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Why are walls, floors, and ceilings so inviting? What is the lure of a classroom when compared to the lure of being outside? It's quite surprising that more science students and teachers aren't clamoring "Let me Out!"

Science educators are frequently looking for activities to take them out of classroom settings. Such an activity evolved during a seminar at UNI called Innovative Biology Teaching. The challenge was to develop a teaching technique for a single concept using the outdoors at the particular time of the assignment. This was late October and early November, not a favorite time for many teachers …

Women In Science: A Developing Country, Doris Simonis Jan 1982

Women In Science: A Developing Country, Doris Simonis

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Because teenaged girls generally avoid classes in physical sciences and advanced mathematics, they reduce their career options. Even highly talented young women do not pursue science in numbers proportionate to their share of the college student population.

One way of examining this problem of underrepresentation is to recognize that women have been effectively isolated from the kinds of encouragement, feedback and experiences that their brothers have had in family, educational, social and occupational situations. Independence in thought and action rarely wins praise for a girl, and mechanical as well as intellectual attainments are likely to get approval only if they …

Chem Gems And Joules Jan 1982

Chem Gems And Joules

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

About thirty years ago it was discovered that crunching on mint Lifesavers will produce green sparks and a crackling noise. Peppermint Lifesavers will produce similar results. According to Lifesavers, Inc. of New York, the mint Lifesavers contain sugar and methyl salicylate (a component of the mint flavoring). When these two compounds are crunched together, a crystalline energy is produced which stimulates the methyl salicylate to emit light. The process is known as triboluminescence.

Career Planning Programs And Processes For Undergraduate Students, Marilyn C. Hawkins Jan 1982

Career Planning Programs And Processes For Undergraduate Students, Marilyn C. Hawkins

Graduate Research Papers

College students, traditional or non-traditional, experience a state of development in which they are searching to discover themselves. Chickering (1969) assumes that they are searching to discover what he has labeled the seven developmental vectors. They are: achieving competency, managing emotions, becoming autonomous, establishing identity, freeing of interpersonal relations, clarifying purposes and developing integrity. The student may face difficulty in adjusting to these developments because of peer and family pressures and because of the need to maintain a stable academic life. To ease the transition period, they are in need of understanding and mature role models. These role models should …

Counseling Needs Of Police Officers, Gehrig K. La Velle

Graduate Research Papers

For many years business and industries have been slow to identify and provide for many needs of workers. Because of union movements in the last fifty years, the worker has achieved a variety of benefits: increased wages, comprehensive medical care, retirement programs, etc. The evolution of mental health coverage has grown from worker pressures to simple economics. A healthy worker is a productive worker and a productive worker increases corporate profit.

A Student Milieu Evaluation Wartburg College, 1981-82, John Douglas Kirchner

Graduate Research Papers

Traditionally, colleges and universities have set up and changed institutional curriculum, policies, services, and physical spaces in an effort to aid in the education of their students. This educational effort unfortunately was often misguided, since it was rarely done on the basis of a systematic survey of student need. Students who did not adjust to the campus environment were either referred to a service to help them make the necessary adjustment or eased out of school.

Response To Janis Myers By Mary Girvana, Mary Girvana

Iowa Journal of Communication

"A credibility problem exists and it stifles the recognition and growth of speech as an entity," is a statement that seems unsupported. The "credibility problem" of speech is probably no greater than the credibility problem (if there is one) of our public school system in Iowa.

Did The Devil Make Darwin Do It? Historical Perspectives On The Creation-Evolution Controversy, David B. Wilson Jan 1982

Did The Devil Make Darwin Do It? Historical Perspectives On The Creation-Evolution Controversy, David B. Wilson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The 19th century witnessed a conceptual revolution of the 1st magnitude, not only in biology but also in geology, theology, philosophy, Biblical studies, and physics. This paper sketches these intellectual developments in Britain as they shaped and were shaped by the ideas of Charles Darwin. From this perspective, the paper comments on aspects of the current creation-evolution controversy, including the creationist suggestion that scientists accepted the theory of evolution because Satan persuaded them to do so.

Effects Of An Ammonia-Rich Municipal Sewage Effluent On Iowa River Fauna Near Marshalltown, Iowa, Keith Govro, Marianne V. Moore, Craig L. Olson Jan 1982

Effects Of An Ammonia-Rich Municipal Sewage Effluent On Iowa River Fauna Near Marshalltown, Iowa, Keith Govro, Marianne V. Moore, Craig L. Olson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The effect of the Marshalltown municipal sewage effluent on Iowa River water quality and fauna was evaluated from July 1976 through August 1977. The effluent contains high total ammonia and un-ionized ammonia concentrations due to ammonia-rich discharges from meat packinghouses. Dissolved oxygen, pH, temperature, total ammonia nitrogen, and un-ionized ammonia data were collected at.12 sampling stations extending 18 km downstream from the sewage effluent discharge. Wild fish collections were made by using electrofishing, seines, and hoopnets. Thirty-eight fish species were collected during the study. Channel catfish. (Ictalurus punctatus) and smallmouth bass (Micropterus dolomieus) were the most common gamefish. No consistent …

Limax Amebae In Two Swimming Pools At Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa, Lawrence G. Mitchell, Samuel C. Townsend, Kenneth C. Choquette

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Four types of amebae (Acanthamoeba, Hartmanella, Naegleria-like amebae, and a vannellid, probably Platyamoeba) were identified from 2 indoor swimming pools on the Iowa State University campus during January-April 1981. Large numbers of these amebae, and other protozoans and metazoans were found in a yellow-brown (mainly bacterial) floc growing on the pool bottom, in filtering systems, and in recirculation pipes. None of the amebae were found to be pathogenic in laboratory mice. Corrective pool maintenance procedures and laboratory studies of the floc and amebae are described.

The Newest Goal For Science Education, Robert E. Yager Jan 1982

The Newest Goal For Science Education, Robert E. Yager

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Four years ago Helgeson and his co-workers at the ERIC/SMEAC center at Ohio State reported that the goals in science education were in a period of major transition (Helgeson, et al., 1977). Three years ago NSTA published a working paper entitled, Science Education: Accomplishments and Needs, in which new goals for the discipline were identified (NSTA, 1978). Recently the NSTA Research Committee completed a research project - one facet of which determined the degree of agreement about such major changes in goals as well as an indication of the nature of new goals (Yager, 1980).

Additional Iowa Bryophyte References, James H. Peck

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Fifty-five annotated references are added to the bibliography of literature on Iowa bryophytes. The references treat taxonomic, ecologic, physiologic, and phytogeographic reports on Iowa mosses, liverworts, and hornworts. The status of lowa bryology is compared to bryology in the other states of the Upper Midwest and Great Plains. The Iowa bryophyte flora now consists of 342 bryophytes, including 277 mosses, 63 liverworts, and 3 hornworts. A total of 153 reports to the study of Iowa bryophytes have now been located and annotated.

The Flood Of Antievolutionism, Laurie R. Godfrey Jan 1982

The Flood Of Antievolutionism, Laurie R. Godfrey

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In 1963, American historian Richard Hofstadter wrote that "today the evolutionary controversy seems as remote as the Homeric era.'' The Biological Sciences Curriculum Study Project, supported in part by federal funds, was preparing secondary school texts that openly presented evolution as the foundation of biology. And George McCready Price, an outspoken leader of the protest against evolution in the days of the Scopes "monkey trial" and author of numerous antievolutionary tomes, including The Phantom of Organic Evolution (1924), A History of Some Scientific Blunders (1930), The Modern Flood Theory of Geology (1935), and Genesis Vindicated (1941), died at the age …

Nature And Effect Of Bilingual Education Programs On Second Language Acquisition, Mark David Finanger Jan 1982

Nature And Effect Of Bilingual Education Programs On Second Language Acquisition, Mark David Finanger

Graduate Research Papers

Bilingual programs, a newcomer to public education, are struggling against the hardships which accompany stages of infancy. Historically, bilingualism has been attempted in American schools since the eighteenth century when early immigrants organized schools to educate their children. Even today, public school classrooms contain children from other countries speaking different languages, representing different cultures. An education which enhances this bilingual atmosphere seems appropriate to fulfill the needs of non-English-speaking children. However, bilingual education in America is being denied the attention it deserves; consequently, the bilingual education effort to implement successful programs is accompanied by numerous problems.
