Distribution Of Aquatic Plants In Keokuk Pool (Navigation Pool 19) Of The Upper Mississippi River, Donald W. Steffeck, Fred L. Paveglio, Carl E. Korschgen

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Submersed and emergent plants were studied on the lower 42 km of Keokuk Pool (Navigation Pool 19), Upper Mississippi River in 1977. Aquatic plants occurred on a total of 1340 ha. These plants varied in coverage but when aggregated totaled 567 ha, the remainder of the 1340 ha being open water interspersion areas. Submersed species composed 55% of the aquatic plants and emergent species totaled 45 %. Dominant submersed species were Heteranthera dubia, Potamogeton pectinatus, Ceratophyllum demersum and Vallisneria americana. The emergent species documented were Nelumbo lutea and Sagittaria sp. Five major areas of aquatic plant development occurred in the …

Flora And Phytogeographical History Of Ledges State Park, Boone County, Iowa, Cindy L. Johnson-Groh, Donald R. Farrar Jan 1985

Flora And Phytogeographical History Of Ledges State Park, Boone County, Iowa, Cindy L. Johnson-Groh, Donald R. Farrar

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The Ledges State Park flora includes 437 species of vascular plants, several of which are unusual for central Iowa. The flora is surprisingly diverse considering its western location. The current distributions and occurrences of plants in the Ledges suggest the influence of historic plant migrations. The Ledges flora is composed of three elements, eastern mesophytic species, southern zerophytic species and northern boreal species. The dissected topography of the Ledges State Park has allowed boreal species, relics of northern forests, to persist in the protected canyon habitats.

The Amphibians And Reptiles Of Iowa's Loess Hills, James L. Christiansen, Catherine M. Mabry Jan 1985

The Amphibians And Reptiles Of Iowa's Loess Hills, James L. Christiansen, Catherine M. Mabry

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The amphibians and reptiles of Iowa's Loess Hills were surveyed from 1969 through 1983. Results of this study were compared with collections made prior to 1969, mostly those of R. M. Bailey from 1939 through 1946. The area was found to support 21 snake, four lizard, six turtle, ten anuran, and two salamander species. Five species have declined in abundance and seven may have increased. Most of the declining forms were prairie dwellers while most of those appearing to increase were woodland species. Three species were added to the known fauna of the Loess Hills.

Distribution And Abundance Of Birds In The Loess Hills Of Western Iowa, Robert W. Howe, Dean M. Roosa, Joseph P. Schaufenbuel, W. Ross Silcock Jan 1985

Distribution And Abundance Of Birds In The Loess Hills Of Western Iowa, Robert W. Howe, Dean M. Roosa, Joseph P. Schaufenbuel, W. Ross Silcock

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Recent investigations have provided a good understanding of the distribution and abundance of birds in the Loess Hills. Surveys have been conducted during natural history forays sponsored by the State Preserves Advisory Board and by our quantitative investigation during 1982-83. Fifteen stations covering the entire length of Iowa's Loess Hills landform were visited. Three habitats were sampled at each station: native grassland, agricultural (brome or alfalfa) field, and forest. This paper describes typical bird communities of each habitat and compares species composition within and between stations. Grassland bird communities tend to be richer in the northern Loess Hills; the opposite …

A Study Of Controlling Variables Using A Microcomputer Program Compared To The Piagetian Bending Rods Task, Rita Arlene Hrecz Jan 1985

A Study Of Controlling Variables Using A Microcomputer Program Compared To The Piagetian Bending Rods Task, Rita Arlene Hrecz

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study compared two formats of controlling variables. Subjects' performance of controlling variables in the Piagetian Bending Rods Task was compared to their performance of controlling variables in the microcomputer interactive program called Measuring Gravitational Forces. The correlation result (0.78 on the Spearman rho and the Pearson Product Moment correlations) and results of the nonparametric Wilcoxon t test and the parametric correlated t indicated no statistically significant difference of subjects' performance of controlling variables in either task. No statistically significant gender difference of subjects' performance of either the Bending Rods Task or the Measuring Gravitational Forces computer program was found. …

The Effects Of Prenatal Versus Postnatal Maternal Environment On Saline Intake By Crossbred Rats, Mary Elizabeth Deyo Jan 1985

The Effects Of Prenatal Versus Postnatal Maternal Environment On Saline Intake By Crossbred Rats, Mary Elizabeth Deyo

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Previous research has demonstrated strain differences in sodium intake as well as strain-dependent effects of early experience on the sodium intake of rats. The present study investigated the roles of prenatal and postnatal maternal environment in determining the sodium intake patterns of hybrid offspring resulting from the reciprocal crossing of two inbred rat strains known to differ in sodium consumption: TS3 (high intake) and I (low intake). Offspring of identical genetic makeup were first subjected to differing prenatal maternal environments (TS3 or I). At birth the crossbred pups were either cross-fostered to a host dam of the opposite strain or …

Case Study: Comparison And Information Of Science Education At The Three State Universities In Iowa, Rita Hrecz

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this paper was threefolds:

1) To fulfill a course requirement;

2) To acquaint myself with the reason for the comme·nts I've heard about Science Education at the University of Northern Iowa being unique,

J) To exchange information between the three State Universities from my belief that we often do not communicate enough and are therefore missing opportunities to support and assist one another.

Differences In Body Density And Perceived Exertion Determined By Hydrostatic Weighing At Three Selected Lung Volumes, Holly Ann Grenier Jan 1985

Differences In Body Density And Perceived Exertion Determined By Hydrostatic Weighing At Three Selected Lung Volumes, Holly Ann Grenier

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Body density (DB) and ratings of perceived exertion (RPE) were determined from hydrostatic weighing (HW) performed at residual volume (RV), total lung capacity (TLC), and peak inspiratory tidal volume (PITV). Subjects were 31 females with a mean age of 23.4 ± 4.7 years. RV was measured on land by using a simplified method of oxygen dilution. VC was measured by spirometer with the subject submerged to the neck in water. PITV was measured with the subject completely submerged at the time of weighing. DB was 1.045 ± .010, 1 . 050 ± .010, and 1.046 ± .010 for HW at …

Preschoolers' Gender Assignment To An Androgynous Storybook Character, Mara C. Loeb Jan 1985

Preschoolers' Gender Assignment To An Androgynous Storybook Character, Mara C. Loeb

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Tests designed to identify sexual preference, and administered to 8th grade through college-age subjects, have revealed a strong male bias in the responses by both sexes. Perceived similarity to a character (identification) increases attention to, and memory of, sex stereotyped information. Thus, a preference for the male gender would increase the effectiveness of information for males but not for females, since identification is not possible. This study examined preschoolers' identification with an androgynous storybook character. Eighty three- and four-year-old boys and girls from randomly chosen preschools were read a storybook prepared for this study. The storybook controlled for three gender …

An Analysis Of The Iowa Tests Of Educational Development Performance Of Participants And Non-Participants In A Ninth Grade Contemporary Science Course, Ronald D. Millsap Jan 1985

An Analysis Of The Iowa Tests Of Educational Development Performance Of Participants And Non-Participants In A Ninth Grade Contemporary Science Course, Ronald D. Millsap

Graduate Research Papers

The need to document the results of instruction in a school system has been recorded as early as 1912 (Thorndike, 1912). Today, there is little argument about the necessity of evaluating pupil progress. Recent national attention has focused on public education and student performance on standardized achievement tests. Reports such as "Nation at Risk: The Imperative for Education Reform" (1983) agree that public schools need to be more accountable for student achievement and that standardized tests may be one of the best tools for assessing and/or evaluating the performance of students and schools.

Cognitive Correlates And Predictors Of Verbal Aggression And Anger In The College Population, Douglas Allen Davidson Jan 1985

Cognitive Correlates And Predictors Of Verbal Aggression And Anger In The College Population, Douglas Allen Davidson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The present investigation involved a multidimensional approach to the assessment of anger and aggression. Past research had neglected to use multiple assessment approaches to assess the degree of anger and aggression experience. The present study evaluated cognitive, behavioral, and physiological measures of anger and aggression. This study examined the subjects' thought processes, as well as their actual verbal behavior in role-play situations. The purpose of the present study was to find out what variables were the best predictors of verbal aggression and anger. Based on past research the following hypotheses were proposed: (a) subjects rated high on anger and aggression …

This exploratory study analyzed the incidence and nature of barriers experienced by applicants wishing to adopt special needs children; defined as: "children who are older; have physical disabilities; are emotionally troubled; or are mentally retarded. Many are Black or Hispanic. Some are brothers and sisters who need a home together." Between mid-January and the end of June 1984; approximately 13;000 questionnaires were mailed to affiliates of the North American Council on Adoptable Children (NACAC); foster parents associations; and other groups and individuals. Usable surveys were returned by 535 respondents; of whom 55.7 percent were identified as having experienced a homestudy …

Colonel Francis Parker And Beginning Reading Instruction, Elinor Woods Kline Jan 1985

Colonel Francis Parker And Beginning Reading Instruction, Elinor Woods Kline

Graduate Research Papers

In the late nineteenth century progressive educators advocated reforms in the educational system that were intended to humanize instruction. At the forefront of this movement was Colonel Francis W. Parker, a teacher and later an administrator who concerned himself with all aspects of the curriculum, including beginning reading. He was acclaimed by some as an innovator and attacked by others as a heretic. Parker's viewpoints concerning education countered the existing educational practices of the late 1800a. His beliefs concerning the teaching of reading were no leas radical to his time.

A Philosophical Taxonomy Of The Major Correctional Perspectives: Toward A New Approach In Criminal Justice, Steven Jay Cuvelier Jan 1985

A Philosophical Taxonomy Of The Major Correctional Perspectives: Toward A New Approach In Criminal Justice, Steven Jay Cuvelier

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Since the repudiation of the rehabilitation ideal in the mid 1970s a considerable body of literature has developed in which the social purpose and goal of American corrections are debated. While much attention has been given to the policy issues surrounding the various correctional approaches, the author notes that little attention has been paid to the philosophical foundations upon which these perspectives are based. Chapter 1 traces the development of correctional ideology from its beginning to the present crises. An overview of the current problems faced by corrections is given, focusing upon the lack of conceptual clarity in the criminal …
