Orthomolecular Therapy For The Treatment Of Mental Illness With Vitamins, Randall Lee Harding Jan 1985

Orthomolecular Therapy For The Treatment Of Mental Illness With Vitamins, Randall Lee Harding

Graduate Research Papers

The mentally ill patient has long been a major medical problem. Large numbers of our population need and receive help every year for mental illness. If a person has a physiological abnormality, such as a biochemical aberration, whether it effects his perception or his emotional control, he may not be able to respond to even highly trained professionals when it is viewed as a psychological disorder. If the correctable physiological abnormalities are found in even a small percentage of cases, treatment of these abnormalities could mean improvement for large numbers of children and adults with diagnosis of autism, paranoia, schizophrenia, …

The Causes Of Adolescent Suicide, Elaine Ann Pfalzgraf Jan 1985

The Causes Of Adolescent Suicide, Elaine Ann Pfalzgraf

Graduate Research Papers

In one year in the U.S., 500,000 young people between the ages of 10 and 24 will attempt suicide and more than 5,000 will succeed, Jensen (1984). In his article "Adolescent Suicide: A Tragedy of Our Times" (1984), Jensen notes that suicide is the second leading cause of death in young people in this nation between the ages of 10 and 24. He writes that the rate of adolescent suicides began increasing in the mid-1950's and has tripled since 1960. In addition to these statistics, 85% of all adolescents in the U.S. think about suicide at some time and 50% …

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

From 1981 through 1983 biological surveys of the Loess Hills were sponsored by the Iowa State Preserves Advisory Board. Twenty-four sites in 7 counties were visited during the first week in June during these years. Collections were made of all macrofungi producing identifiable fruiting structures or represented by recognizable weathered fruiting structures developed the previous fall. Plane parasitic fungi and corticolous lichens were also recorded. Fungi of the Loess Hills of Iowa had been previously documented primarily by Gilman's and Gilman and Archer's reports of plant parasitic fungi. This report includes 3 species of Oomycetes, 18 species of Myxomycetes, 67 …

Improvements In Techniques For Aging Mammals By Dental Cementum Annuli, Douglas S. Allen, Rudy C. Melfi

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Several modifications of commonly used histological techniques for the preparation of dental tissues for aging by dental cementum annuli are presented. Improvements in methods of tissue collection, preservation, decalcification, sectioning, and staining permit faster preparation of tissues and produce higher-quality, easily interpreted sections. Possible application of hard-tissue microtomes to sectioning of undecalcified or partially decalcified tissues is also discussed.

Factors That Do Not Separate Effective And Ineffective Science Teachers, Robert E. Yager, Patrick Ibe

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

With only two exceptions, no significant differences are found · the profiles of most effective and least effective teachers. Druva and Anderson (1983) recently reported the results of a meta analysis of significant research in science teacher education. Their findings suggest that most factors believed to impact the teaching performance of science instructors do not, in fact, play a very important role. Despite these findings, many science educators continue to accept the same old assumptions and beliefs concerning what is needed to improve science teacher education programs. As the National Science Foundation expands programs in response to new appropriations and …

Changes In Science Enrollments And Graduation Requirements In Iowa Public High Schools, 1973-1983, Jack A. Gerlovich

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

In recent years, public education has received stringent criticism for its performance in producing students who have a very low level of competency in some subjects (National Commission on Excellence in Education, 1983). The media and various professional organizations have conceded that students in the United States have, in recent years, performed poorly in science when compared with students from other developed nations (Jacobson and Doran, 1985). Alleged reasons for poor performance on the part of U.S. students include shortage of qualified teachers, apathetic or negative public attitude toward schools, changing sociological and educational roles of the parent and ~ …

Iowa's Loess Hills - A National Treasure, Donald R. Farrar, Dean M. Roosa, Jean C. Prior Jan 1985

Iowa's Loess Hills - A National Treasure, Donald R. Farrar, Dean M. Roosa, Jean C. Prior

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A narrow band of unusual hills skirts the Missouri River valley along Iowa's western border. The steep, sharply ridged topography and the predominance of native grass and woodland cover stand in marked contrast to the orderly rolling farm fields to the east and the broad cultivated floodplain of the Missouri River to the west. These high, narrow-spurred ridges, steep slopes, and deep ravines constitute the Iowa landform region known as the Loess Hills.

A Content Analysis Of Books Depicting Adopted Teenagers In Adolescent Novels Published Between 1965-1981, Myrna Griffith

Graduate Research Papers

Since .adolescents can find answers to their questions by reading fiction, fiction that portrays teenagers like themselves, adolescent books on the subject of adoption may serve as a source of current information on adoption and society's attitudes of searching. This researcher proposed that an annotated bibliography be developed in this study. The technique of content analysis was used and young adult fiction titles were selected which might enable the young adult readers to determine if they can find answers to some of their questions about their birth parents and whether to search for them.

Catalog Of Brown-Headed Cowbird Hosts From Iowa, Peter E. Lowther Jan 1985

Catalog Of Brown-Headed Cowbird Hosts From Iowa, Peter E. Lowther

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A survey of literature, egg collections and field data produced a list of 60 species that have served as hosts of the brood parasitic Brown-headed Cowbird in Iowa. About 52 of these species are known to have reared cowbird young. In Iowa, those species most commonly parasitized - in absolute numbers - include Red-winged Blackbirds, Dickcissels, Common Yellowthroats and Song Sparrows. An additional 36 species are listed which nest in Iowa but have not yet been recorded as cowbird hosts in the state even though they have served as cowbird hosts elsewhere.

Ecology Of Iowa Drosophila I. Lowland Forest, Neil J. Jennings, Edward Pilkington, Robert D. Seager

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

We have studied the seasonal abundances of Drosophila species collected from a lowland forest community in northeastern Iowa. Eleven species were collected of which six were collected in appreciable numbers (over 20 individuals). One species, D. affinis, is dominant until early summer when it virtually disappears and a second species, D. tripunctata, becomes dominant. Two other species, D. falleni and D. robusta, also are very common early in the year and collected much less frequently later. It is hypothesized that temperature is a critical factor in determining these seasonal patterns.

Calcium Oxalate Bipyramidal Crystals On The Basidiocarps Of Geastrum Minus (Lycoperdales), Harry T. Horner, Lois H. Tiffany, Anita M. Cody Jan 1985

Calcium Oxalate Bipyramidal Crystals On The Basidiocarps Of Geastrum Minus (Lycoperdales), Harry T. Horner, Lois H. Tiffany, Anita M. Cody

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Geastrum minus (Persoon) Fischer is a temperate-zone, litter-associated fungus that displays bipyramidal crystals of calcium oxalate dihydrate (weddellite) on the peridial surfaces of its basidiocarps. The chemical nature and habit of the crystals were determined by X-ray diffraction and elemental energy dispersive analyses, and scanning electron microscopy. This study represents the first known report of calcium oxalate crystals being associated with Geastrum and extends the list of soil, litter, and wood-rot fungi that produce crystals during some stage of their life cycles. The occurrence of crystal-forming fungi in these micro-environments is intriguing for a variety of reasons that include their …
