The Scarlet H: Herpesvirus Hominus -- Its Clinical Manifestations And Personal Implications, Ann K. Larson

Graduate Research Papers

Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) tend to affect sufferers psychologically as well as physically. Most of these diseases, however, can be cured and forgotten. Genital herpes, the leading Sexually Transmitted Disease in the United States, seems to cause more psychological damage than do any of the other STDs. (Chase, 1983) Herpetics must cope with the knowledge that their Sexually Transmitted Disease in incurable. The fact that there is a paucity of information on counseling the herpetic contributes to the need for the study. Any professional dealing with an individual who has recently learned he or she has genital herpes needs to …

Implications Of Existential-Humanistic Principles For Counseling Adolescents In Schools, Peter John Larson Jan 1984

Implications Of Existential-Humanistic Principles For Counseling Adolescents In Schools, Peter John Larson

Graduate Research Papers

This study focuses upon the emergence of existential humanistic psychology, particularly as developed through the work of Carl Rogers. The study attempts to display how existential humanistic psychology, as expressed through the work of Rogers, may offer valuable insights to counselors working with adolescents in school settings. By assuming that adolescents are at the forefront of society in terms of planning lives in a fast-changing and often despairing climate, the conclusion is offered that the principles of existential-humanistic psychology might be particularly relevant to counselors who are working with the adolescent in schools.

Zoogeography Of Iowa's Paleozoic Plateau, Robert W. Howe Jan 1984

Zoogeography Of Iowa's Paleozoic Plateau, Robert W. Howe

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The Paleozoic Plateau and adjacent rocky outcrop areas of northeastern Iowa harbor many of the state’s most unique animal species. Nearly 40% of the state's endangered or threatened vertebrates and all of Iowa's animals on the national list are known from this region. Quantitative comparisons with other parts of the state confirm the existence of a rich vertebrate fauna in the Paelozoic Plateau region. Its peripheral location within Iowa, extensive forest cover, and relatively undisturbed river systems account largely for the occurrence of species found rarely or not at all elsewhere in the state. Less mobile organisms such as land …

Since the review of the first 100 years published in the centennial issue of the Proceedings in March 1975, the "Annual Report" has been a running history of the organization. The previous reports were written by Robert W. Hanson, the Executive Director from 1967 to 1983. In keeping with this tradition, this author will review this year's activities of the Academy. This year's report encompasses the year beginning July 1, 1983 and ending June 30, 1984, and is based on Board minutes, committee reports and …

An Annotated Bibliography Of Biographies For Career Education - Grades 4-6, Susan P. Polashek

Graduate Research Papers

An annotated bibliography of biographies was compiled for the career education program in grades 4-6. An attempt was made to locate four biographies for each of the fifteen job clusters designated by the U.S. Office of Education that would be representative of the spectrum of the world of work. A search was made of the Cedar Falls Public Library, Wauzeka Public Schools IMC, and interlibrary loan for biographies. Representative biographies were found for the job clusters of Agribusiness and Natural Resources, Environment, Communication and Media, Fine Arts and Humanities, Health, Public Services, and Recreation and Hospitality. A limited number of …

The Status Of Student Development Programs Designed For Nontraditional Women Students In Higher Education, Laura S. Kirk-Clark Jan 1984

The Status Of Student Development Programs Designed For Nontraditional Women Students In Higher Education, Laura S. Kirk-Clark

Graduate Research Papers

The mission of higher education is directed to every prospective and enrolled student. In college catalogs throughout the United States, statements of purpose or aims of institutions are recorded. Although these statements may differ in words, phrases, or structure, the content is similar. Upon completion of the college experience, the individual student will be better prepared, both intellectually and emotionally, to contribute to society (Whiteley and Sprandel, 1970).

Chemical Dependency And Rational-Emotive Therapy, David Charles Towle Jan 1984

Chemical Dependency And Rational-Emotive Therapy, David Charles Towle

Graduate Research Papers

Chemical dependency is a major health problem in the United States ranking third among major health problems and surpassed only by cancer and heart disease. The social costs associated with chemical dependency are estimated to be over $40 billion annually. These social costs are reflected by such factors as lost job productivity, the medical costs of treating alcohol and drug related illnesses and injuries, the property damages and 25,000 lives lost per year to intoxicated drivers, and the cost of administering justice to those who are arrested and convicted of chemical abuse related offenses (Zimberg, 1982).

A Critical Evaluation Of Rogerian Counseling In Terms Of Its Usefulness In Christian Counseling, James O. Sims Jan 1984

A Critical Evaluation Of Rogerian Counseling In Terms Of Its Usefulness In Christian Counseling, James O. Sims

Graduate Research Papers

Pastoral counseling, in its present condition, is dominated ''almost exclusively by therapeutic psychology, principally by Rogerian counseling" (Aden, 1984, p. 38). Depending on one's perspective, such a charge is either a sign of hope or an omen of doom. Gaylord B. Noyce, professor of pastoral theology at the Yale University divinity school sees it as the latter. He charges that an "exaggerated deference" to the client-centered theory and methodology of Carl Rogers is "undermining the ministry in hundreds of congregations today." "We have taken the immensely helpful, nondirective Rogerian pattern and made it gospel, not only for wide areas of …

The Development And Effects Of "Program Sharing" At The Corwith-Wesley And Luverne Community School, Gary Stumberg Jan 1984

The Development And Effects Of "Program Sharing" At The Corwith-Wesley And Luverne Community School, Gary Stumberg

Graduate Research Papers

Many schools across the country have experienced serious problems over the past few years. Many of those problems have their roots in the relationship between student numbers and the financial resourses [sic] used to support educational programs. Declining enrollments have produced deficits in school funding which have pushed many schools beyond the brink of survival. Smaller student enrollments have caused many schools to alter or reduce curriculum offerings and to reduce school personnel. The ever increasing costs of textbooks, educational materials, transportation, and utilities have magnified the financial burdens faced by schools. These problems have resulted in lessened opportunities for …

Additional Iowa Pteridophyte References, James H. Peck

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Fifty-two annotated references are added to the bibliography of references on Iowa pteridophytes. The bibliography was compiled to include references which treated the taxonomic, ecologic, physiologic or phytogeographic aspects of Iowa's ferns, horesetails, quillworts, clubmosses, and spikemosses.
