This is the first of a proposed annual report which summarizes the research activity of the faculty, students and research units at UNI. To be included, the research must have been conducted between July 1, 1983 and June 30, 1984. Data have been derived from a number of offices: grants and contracts, commencement programs submitted by the Registrar, publications in the President's Bulletin, Academic Deans, and the Graduate College. Most of data are presented in table form and are self explanatory.

In the 1880 1 s, with increased urbanization and industrialization in the United States, came the problem of growing numbers of children who could not be adequately cared for by their families. Public assistance was non-existent. Charity was administered privately at the discretion of the benefactor (Jones, Neuman & Shyne, 1976). Until recently, society's response to the problem of inadequately cared for children was to remove the child from the situation, thus 11 protecting11 their rights. Among the helping professions a common concept is the support group. "The social-professional support system (group) affords members ••• opportunities for analyzing problems they encounter and discussing how they feel about these problems. It provides a structure for support and rewards" (Moracco and McFadden, 1980, p. 63). From a review of the literature it is apparent that many support groups both inside and outside the helping professions have been created and utilized. Unemployment has become an increasing national and local concern. Many people are having to face the prospect of never returning to their old jobs. What employment means and the extent and effects of unemployment were researched in the literature. This research focused on the "newly unemployed"--e.g. white, older (45 years or more of age), married males who have never before experienced the problems and frustrations of long-term unemployment. This specific group was chosen for research because they are a departure from those traditionally seen in the Black Hawk County Comprehensive Employment and Training Program (CETP). There are sixteen regional Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation Centers serving the United States. The centers were designated by the National Spinal Cord Injury Association, formerly the National Paraplegia Foundation, founded by the paralyzed veterans of America in 1948. The purpose of rehabilitation of this group of patients is "to provide spinal cord injured individuals with the opportunity to resume 1 a lifestyle as similar to their preinjury state as is possible" (Lawson, 1978, p. 573). Rehabilitation centers utilize the efforts of many professionals working as a team to help their patients maximize their potential for independence.

Incidence Of Burnout In The Student Personnel Services Of A University, Susan C. Spencer

The topic of burnout has created its own little brushfire in professional publications. Since 1974, when the term "burnout" began to appear, it has stirred the interest of an increasing number of authors each year according to Savicki and Cooney (1982). Unfortunately, actual research on the topic has not been plentiful. Perlman and Hartman (1982) and Maslach (1978b) observed that burnout has been primarily a descriptive term and knowledge of the causes, preventions, and cures is still in the embryonic stage.
