Using Senior Citizen Volunteers In Public Schools, Kari R. Gunderson Jan 1986

Using Senior Citizen Volunteers In Public Schools, Kari R. Gunderson

Graduate Research Papers

A generation ago, the term school volunteer meant "parent" volunteer, and the roles of these volunteers were limited. Most elementary schools welcomed parents as chaperons for field trips, room mothers, and to assist with endless housekeeping and clerical tasks that freed the teacher to teach. They welcomed them at school to shelve and process books, collect money for photographs, and weigh and measure children. School volunteers were virtually non-existent in junior and senior high schools (NSVP, 1978). School volunteers today come from many sources and provide a wide range of services for many schools, even at the secondary level (Purcell, …

Effects Of Lifestyle Variables On Commuter Student Grade Point Average, Satisfaction, Attrition And Personal Growth, Steven Vincent Langerud Jan 1986

Effects Of Lifestyle Variables On Commuter Student Grade Point Average, Satisfaction, Attrition And Personal Growth, Steven Vincent Langerud

Graduate Research Papers

Commuter students represent 80% of the undergraduate students in the United States (Stewart and Rue, 1983), and projections rise to 90% for the near future (Hardwick and Kazlo, 1977). While commuter students seek the same benefits from higher education as resident students, their lifestyles vary considerably. Programs developed for traditional, residential students fail to meet the needs of non-resident students, traditional or non-traditional. Stewart and Rue (1983) found commuter students easy to ignore, because they generally arrive on campus after student affairs personnel go home. Ignoring commuter student programming prevents 1 the involvement Astin (1984) considers vital for student development. …

History of Education Book Gallery

This is the second of a proposed series of biennial reports which attempts to summarize some of the research and creative activity of the faculty, students, and research units at UNI. To be included, the activity must have been conducted between July 1, 1984 and June 30, 1986. Data have been derived from a number of offices: grants and contracts, commencement programs submitted by the Registrar, publications in the President's Bulletin, Academic Deans, and the Graduate College. Most of the data are presented in table form and are self explanatory.

The Male Abuser: Guidelines For Counselors Of Small Groups, Beverly Jane Fleshner Jan 1986

The Male Abuser: Guidelines For Counselors Of Small Groups, Beverly Jane Fleshner

Graduate Research Papers

The literature has demonstrated acknowledgement of and facilitative services for the female victims of abuse. Today, most metropolitan areas have, at the least, telephone hotlines and, at the most, safe shelters for women and their children, individual and group counseling, _and services which help them_ with legal, medical, and employment questions. By not focusing as much attention on the male abuser similar services for these men have been slighted. By ignoring men, only half of the violence problem has been addressed. To break the pattern of abuse, treatment and services for men who batter are essential (Feazell, Mayers- & Deschner, …

Teaching Values Through Drama, Gretta Berghammer Jan 1986

Teaching Values Through Drama, Gretta Berghammer

Iowa Journal of Communication

Teaching values through the use of drama is not a radically new idea. In 1966 Melvin Bogin wrote a thesis entitled: "Values Transmitted to Children's Theatre Audiences by Children's Theatre.'' Since then, artists and educators have continued to probe the connection between pedagogy and dramatic art forms. Unfortunately, when parents, teachers, and administrators are approached about examining values through drama, they are often reluctant, in fear that social or political positions will be advocated to students. Nothing could be further from the truth.

A Review Of The Effects Of Maternal Alcoholism On Children: Implications For Child Mental Health, Pamela Sue Maxwell Jan 1985

A Review Of The Effects Of Maternal Alcoholism On Children: Implications For Child Mental Health, Pamela Sue Maxwell

Graduate Research Papers

Children of alcoholics are a neglected population whose needs are not clearly apparent nor understood (Kern et al., 1981). In our society there are nearly thirty-six million family members of alcoholic persons (Kellennann, 1974) of which approximately twenty eight million are children of alcoholics (Deckman & Downs, 1982). Furthermore, there are an estimated seven million children under the age of twenty in the United States who are living with an alcoholic parent (Woodside, 1983). Yet, resources to meet the needs of these children are lacking (Hindman, 1975; Kellennann, 1974).

Considerations For Counseling Gays And Lesbians In "Coming Out", Robert Gene Galloway Jan 1985

Considerations For Counseling Gays And Lesbians In "Coming Out", Robert Gene Galloway

Graduate Research Papers

A growing body of counselors and therapists are publishing books and articles to assist the helping profession in working with gay and lesbian clients. These professionals are part of a more open climate in dealing with gays and lesbians. An outcome of these more accepting attitudes is that the question of "curing homosexuality" is being replaced by concern for dealing with the presenting problems of the clients. This increased openness of counselors can be attributed to the removal of homosexuality from the list of psychiatric disorders over ten years ago, and to the concerns of the gay and lesbian community …

Guided Imagery And Music, Katheen Muleady Seager Jan 1985

Guided Imagery And Music, Katheen Muleady Seager

Graduate Research Papers

Guided Imagery and Music (GIM) is a technique that involves listening to carefully selected music in a relaxed and meditative state for the purpose of reaching altered states of consciousness, and allowing images, symbols, and deep feelings to arise from the inner self. This process facilitates therapeutic intervention, self-understanding, holistic healing and personal growth (Bonny, 1978b). The purpose of this paper is to examine the theoretical basis and development of GIM and to present examples of GIM usage in various therapeutic settings. GIM was selected for investigation because of its association with holistic health movements and applicability to death and …

The Effects Of Family And Self Concept On Women's Career Development, Gail Johnson Huberg Jan 1985

The Effects Of Family And Self Concept On Women's Career Development, Gail Johnson Huberg

Graduate Research Papers

With an ever-increasing number of women in the labor force (Oppenheimer, 1970; statistical Abstract of the U.S., 1984), it has become more important to understand women's career development. Despite large numbers of women in the labor force, women continue to be concentrated in a relatively few occupations such as teaching, secretarial, and nursing (Statistical Abstract of the U.S., 1984), and thus are often limited in income and freedom of choice and expression in the work place.

Barriers To Adoption Of Special Needs Children: A National Study, James G. Mccullagh Jan 1985

Barriers To Adoption Of Special Needs Children: A National Study, James G. Mccullagh

Faculty Publications

This exploratory study analyzed the incidence and nature of barriers experienced by applicants wishing to adopt special needs children; defined as: "children who are older; have physical disabilities; are emotionally troubled; or are mentally retarded. Many are Black or Hispanic. Some are brothers and sisters who need a home together." Between mid-January and the end of June 1984; approximately 13;000 questionnaires were mailed to affiliates of the North American Council on Adoptable Children (NACAC); foster parents associations; and other groups and individuals. Usable surveys were returned by 535 respondents; of whom 55.7 percent were identified as having experienced a homestudy …

Teaching Values Through Drama, Greta Berghammer Jan 1985

Teaching Values Through Drama, Greta Berghammer

Faculty Publications

One dramatic technique to aid students in their discovery of values and value systems is "theatre-in-education" (TIE); a theatre event that takes place in schools; with actors working through roles for and with children. TIE aims to fuse education and theatre by having team members function as both teachers and actors; and the audiences of young people participate as both themselves and characters. TIE programs can be grouped into five categories ranging from full participation (category I); to full performance (category V). Topics that can be explored through TIE are personal freedom; peer pressure; and racial tolerance; leading students to …
