Your Teen-Ager And The School Counselor: A Handbook For Parents, Donald Lee Bennink Jan 1963

Your Teen-Ager And The School Counselor: A Handbook For Parents, Donald Lee Bennink

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Public Law 85-864 was signed by the President of the United States on September 2, 1958. This law, known as the National Defense Education Act (hereafter referred to as NDEA), is composed of ten titles affecting most levels and many phases of education. Its billion dollars, though authorized for a dozen separate programs, have been authorized for a single purpose - that every young person, from the day he first enters school, should have an opportunity to develop his gifts to the fullest. This is the emphasis that gives the Act its name, for it recognizes that in a free …

The Role Of The School Counselor As Viewed By Parents And Counselor-Educators, Donald Allen Fleming Jan 1963

The Role Of The School Counselor As Viewed By Parents And Counselor-Educators, Donald Allen Fleming

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Guidance in the public schools of the United States is a fairly recent development. The Vocational Bureau, established by Frank Parsons in 1909, represented one of the first organized efforts to supplement home guidance. Since that time the scope of guidance has expanded from vocational guidance to include educational and socio-personal guidance as well. With the rapid increase in guidance services in schools, research concerning the guidance program has not kept pace. Much of the information and material published is based on an inadequate background of research. Authors have speculated on the values and place of guidance, but have had …

A Study Of Emotion In Selected Plays Of George Bernard Shaw, Winifred Hager Holkeboer Jan 1959

A Study Of Emotion In Selected Plays Of George Bernard Shaw, Winifred Hager Holkeboer

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

One of an infinite number of descriptions of George Bernard Shaw portrays him as a young Irishman who descended upon England with broom in hand, and, finding it full of philistine abominations, proceeded to make things lively for his self-satisfied host by sweeping the stables clean. Any sensible estimate of this remarkable man must at least admit to his having left England a different place than it· was when he found it. Indeed, his influence has extended beyond the bounds of his time and place; he stood like· a great cosmic giant astride the span of a near-century-one foot planted …

Mental Health Research In A Psychiatric Setting, Irwin J. Knoff Jan 1957

Mental Health Research In A Psychiatric Setting, Irwin J. Knoff

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Modern psychiatric facilities are usually staffed by representatives of psychiatry, psychology, social work, nursing, occupational therapy, and recreational therapy. While each group has in one way or another indicated interest in research, the current overwhelming need for treatment and the dearth of professionally trained personnel have made it necessary for many workers to neglect research activities almost entirely. By tradition and purpose, most psychiatric hospitals focus on service functions and the clinician in this setting is expected to accept this as his principal responsibility. Too often research is viewed as a luxury to be enjoyed sometime in the future when …

Mental Health Research In An Academic Setting, Alfred B. Heilbrun Jr. Jan 1957

Mental Health Research In An Academic Setting, Alfred B. Heilbrun Jr.

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The goals of human research conducted by psychologists in an academic setting might seem at first glance as divergent as the varied interests of the individual researchers. While one concentrates on the relationships between motivational variables and "simple" learning, another investigates the conditions under which complex motor skills are acquired, another studies the effect of stress upon Rorschach performance, and still another attempts to devise some objective measure which can discriminate between individuals characterized by low and high achievement needs. There is, or at' least should be, a goal common to all psychological research, however, that being the establishment of …

An Investigation Of The Development Of Citizens Committees For Public Schools In The United States, James Leonard Gordon

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The problem as identified in the title of this study is just one phase of the larger, more-inclusive problem of developing and maintaining school-community relations. From the beginnings of our public school systems, the problem of effective communication between the people who are the beneficiaries of public educational services and the people who have the responsibility for performing those services has existed.
