Counseling The Older Adult, Barbara Pletz Hill Jan 1987

Counseling The Older Adult, Barbara Pletz Hill

Graduate Research Papers

People in this country are living longer because of better nutrition, better health practices and better medical technologies. In the late 1700's, 2 percent of the population of the United States, or about 50, 000 persons, were 65 years of age or older. In 1900, 4 percent, or about 3.1 million persons were older Americans, and in 1980, the census revealed that there were more than. 11 percent, or about 25.5 million persons 65 years old or older. By 1982, that number had already increased to 26.6 million. The number of older persons has shown a net increase of 1600 …

Children Of Divorce: The Emotional Effects Of Divorce On Adolescents, Roger L. Christensen Jan 1987

Children Of Divorce: The Emotional Effects Of Divorce On Adolescents, Roger L. Christensen

Graduate Research Papers

Hetherington (1979) predicted that as many as one-half of all children born in the United States during the 1970's would spend some time in a single parent home. These children faced unique circumstances as they continued to grow and develop (Desimone-Luis, O'Mahoney, and Hunt, 1979; Kurdek and Siesky, 1980b; Levitin, 1979; Luepnitz, 1979; Wallerstein, 1984a,b; and Wallerstein and Kelly, 1980). When parents separated, these youth felt an insecurity about their situation (Andrew, 1978; Farber, Primavera, and Felner, 1983; Hetherington, 1979; Nelly, 1984; Wallerstein, 1984a,b; and Wallerstein and Kelly, 1980). At times this uncertainty hindered their ability to function, hurt their …

Issues Of Intervention In Child Sexual Abuse, Mark Cecil Kalvik Jan 1987

Issues Of Intervention In Child Sexual Abuse, Mark Cecil Kalvik

Graduate Research Papers

Counselors working in the mental health profession are more frequently dealing with the issue of child sexual abuse than ever before. This is true despite the specialized populations with which counselors are working. For example, counselors and other professionals working with adult alcoholics or mental patients are becoming more aware that some of their clients have been sexually abused as children or are the perpetrators of child sexual abuse, or both. This is true at my work setting, the Mental Health Institute, Independence, Iowa, due to both a significant increase in the literature available on child sexual abuse and because …

Standards Of Satisfactory Academic Progress For Student Financial Aid Eligibility At The Iowa Regents Universities, Brent C. Stearns Jan 1987

Standards Of Satisfactory Academic Progress For Student Financial Aid Eligibility At The Iowa Regents Universities, Brent C. Stearns

Graduate Research Papers

The beginning of a substantial federal government commitment to institution-based student financial aid as a matter of national policy dates from the National Defense Education Act (NDEA) of 1958. Growing out of the post-Sputnick concern that the United States was lagging behind the Soviet Union in technology, the NDEA established a number of federal programs designed to increase the number of college trained specialists, primarily in mathematics and science (Carnegie Council, 1975). The College Work Study Program, which originated with the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964, served to promote part-time employment for students with financial need. The enactment of the …

Adult Children Of Alcoholics: Review Of The Literature, Helen Karamitros Deets Jan 1987

Adult Children Of Alcoholics: Review Of The Literature, Helen Karamitros Deets

Graduate Research Papers

Many adults who experience the trauma of growing up in an alcoholic family system develop a condition of similar symptoms and behaviors, called the Adult Children of Alcoholics Syndrome (Kritzberg, 1985). It is estimated that over half of the twenty-eight to thirty-four million children of alcoholics are adults (Black, 1981). Cermak ( 1985), Bowden and Gravitz (1984) noted that although children of alcoholics compromise one of the largest identifiable groups in America, recognition of the issues these individuals face has been very recent.

Examining The Implementation Of Patient Education In Phases I And Ii Of Cardiac Rehabilitation, Ann Marie Bjorndahl

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study was to examine the implementation of patient education in phases I and II of cardiac rehabilitation so that an overview of its current status in cardiac rehabilitation programs could be determined. One hundred four phase I and II cardiac rehabilitation program directors from the states of Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin were selected for participation in the study. A questionnaire containing items addressing both general program information and the specifics of the patient education programs was sent to the program directors. Seventy-five of the questionnaires were returned, seventy-one of which were viable for data …

Counseling The Elderly With Drug Abuse Problems, Helen Juanita Hadley Jan 1986

Counseling The Elderly With Drug Abuse Problems, Helen Juanita Hadley

Graduate Research Papers

The elderly population is especially subject to adverse drug reactions and interactions since drugs are such an integral part of their life-style (Allen, 1980). As people age, an increasing number sustain chronic conditions and become dependent on drugs in the performance of their daily activities. Whether these drugs are physician-prescribed or self-prescribed OTC (over-the-counter) drugs, there are problems of noncompliance, misuse, and abuse (Krupka & Vener, 1979).

Prolonged Unemployment: The Reality And Responses, David C. Nethercott Jan 1986

Prolonged Unemployment: The Reality And Responses, David C. Nethercott

Graduate Research Papers

Prolonged unemployment is a profound social problem as evidenced by a rise in the suicide rate, mental hospital admissions, prison terms, homicides, and health related 1 deaths which appear in statistics several years later (Reigle, 1982). Roberts (1985) described the problem bluntly when she wrote, "unemployment is a killer" (p. 169). Shifron, Dye, and Shifron (1983) reported disturbing statistics that show an estimated 15 million Americans to be "hidden unemployed" or "discouraged workers", those who have given up on finding a job and no longer appear in labor statistics. Hidden unemployment in this article means simply 'not counted' in labor …

Countertransference In Counseling The Terminally Ill Client, Sharon Carpenter Curtis Jan 1986

Countertransference In Counseling The Terminally Ill Client, Sharon Carpenter Curtis

Graduate Research Papers

According to many authorities, probably the most universally shared human fears are those surrounding death (Clarke, 1981; Kubler-Ross, 1969; Momeyer, 1985). In counseling 11 life-threatened11 or dying clients, there is an urgent need for empathy and transparency on the part of the counselor. Ideally, it is essential for counselors to resolve as much as possible their own conflicts concerning "death issues" so that they are more able to help clients work through their own unresolved conflicts concerning the impending death.

Infertility: A Developmental Crisis Related To Parenting, Barbara Jean Braband Jan 1986

Infertility: A Developmental Crisis Related To Parenting, Barbara Jean Braband

Graduate Research Papers

The crisis of infertility strikes one in six couples of childbearing age. "Infertility, the inability to achieve pregnancy after one year of regular sexual relations, or the inability to carry pregnancy to a live birth" (Menning, 1982, p. 155), will be experienced by 15-20% of the population of childbearing ages 22-40 years (Bernstein & Mattox, 1982; Goodman & Rothman, 1984). Infertility was diagnosed as either primary or secondary. According to Bernstein and Mattox (1982) primary infertility occurred if a pregnancy had never been achieved. If a woman had been pregnant at least once, even if that pregnancy resulted in an …

Counseling For Mexican-American College Students, Ted Robert Johnson Jan 1986

Counseling For Mexican-American College Students, Ted Robert Johnson

Graduate Research Papers

The concept of the American "melting pot" is giving way to a country which celebrates ethnic diversity. This can be seen in the Mexican-American population, which is a large part of the rapidly growing Hispanic population. The latter includes large numbers of Cuban American, Puerto Ricans, and peoples whose heritage stems from Central and South America. The Hispanic population in the United States increased 61% between 1970 and 1980, from 9. 1 mill ion to 14.6 million (Ford Foundation, 1984). Extrapolating a continued pattern of growth, some experts believe that Blacks and Hispanics combined will surpass Whites as the nation's …

Paradox As A Family Ingredient, Katherine L. Fluke Jan 1986

Paradox As A Family Ingredient, Katherine L. Fluke

Graduate Research Papers

Several problems are evident when examining the use of paradox in family therapy. Experts in the field vary on the definition of paradox; how to label and categorize paradox; when to use or not use paradox; and the very nature of paradox as a therapy ingredient. Many experts express the opinion that paradox is part of the essence of life and relationships, particularly the therapist/client relationship. In this paper it will be assumed the reader has a knowledge of family· therapy and a frame of reference or theory base from which they operate. How paradox can be defined; the nature …

The Wives Of Alcoholics: Three Models, Amy Moeller Jan 1986

The Wives Of Alcoholics: Three Models, Amy Moeller

Graduate Research Papers

Literature concerning wives of alcoholics has changed its focus dramatically during the past fifty years, moving through three different trends. The earliest model, called the "disturbed personality model," was the dominant point of view from the 1930's into the 1950's. It held that a woman who is in some way psychologically maladjusted - dependent, hostile, domineering, masochistic, sadistic - marries the alcoholic to fulfill her own neurotic needs.
