An Experiment In Mental Rehabilitation, Walter S. Newell Jan 1929

An Experiment In Mental Rehabilitation, Walter S. Newell

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The report presents the case of Mr. H., a student in Coe College who volunteered for service in the World War and suffered a serious injury by fall of an air-plane. Mr. H. recovered consciousness but had no memory and attempts to restore his lost holdings by showing him pictures of home scenes and by bringing him back to his college environment were only partially successful. The report gives something of Mr. H.'s background High school and College record prior to his injury.

Speech Sounds Of Preschool Children, Beth L. Wellman

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Beginning in 1924 and extending over a period of four years the Iowa Child Welfare Research Station, in cooperation with the Department of Speech of the University of Iowa, has been studying the development of preschool children in the ability to produce correctly the consonant elements, consonant blends, vowels and diphthongs of the English language. The project has involved the cooperation of a number of individuals from both departments.

A Synthetic Tone-Mixer, Joseph Tiffin Jan 1929

A Synthetic Tone-Mixer, Joseph Tiffin

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A device designed to demonstrate the phenomenon of "tone-mixing" will be exhibited and described. By means of this apparatus a vibrato may be synthetically produced with the number of pulses per second, extent of frequency fluctuation, and intensity relationship under control. The manner in which each of these variables influences the perceived tone can thus be determined. It is also possible to reproduce a vibrato whose rate, extent, and intensity relationship are identical with those of artistic singing. One factor at a time can then be varied and the relative importance of the several elements in the artistic tone determined. …

A Comparison In Academic Achievement Of The Student In The Upper Quartile With Those In The Lower Quartile As Measured By Aptitude Tests, J. E. Evans

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Of the 464 freshmen included in this study fifty-five were in the lower quartile and 109 in the upper. The tests used for the study were the I. S. C. Aptitude Test and the Engineering Information Test. The fifty-five students in the lower quartile made 196 failures during the first three terms, while the 109 students made 169 failures in the same time.

The Evaluation Of The Musical Capacity Of Nursery School Children, Thomas F. Vance, Medora Grandprey Jan 1929

The Evaluation Of The Musical Capacity Of Nursery School Children, Thomas F. Vance, Medora Grandprey

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The elements in the situation which focused attention upon the possibility of evaluating the musical capacity of nursery school children by a method which might have some approach to reliability were three-fold: an enrollment of thirty-one children, a number of which were almost invariably eager for and interested in the musical phase of the nursery school program; a teacher whose musical ability was considerably above the average, with a professional interest in a problem of this kind; and a psychologist on the staff also interested in the problem.

A Study Of Antagonistic Habits, Martin F. Fritz Jan 1929

A Study Of Antagonistic Habits, Martin F. Fritz

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A single rat given 6000 trials (50 trials per day) for a period of four months on a dual choke apparatus, showed no ability to reduce the time in turning from one learned stimulus (a light) to the opposite stimulus (no light). No evidence of insight was found but merely rote or mechanical learning. A human being would probably solve such a problem quickly by means of verbal cues. A possible interpretation that the old habit is not "torn down" but only inhibited or suppressed. Same results found with three other rats given 2000 trials each.

The Project Method In Laboratory Psychology, R. H. Sylvester Jan 1929

The Project Method In Laboratory Psychology, R. H. Sylvester

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Of course every experiment is a project, literally, but usually there are two outstanding weaknesses. One is the failure to connect the study closely with other courses and to bring general lecture and text-book material to bear upon the experiments. The other is the tendency to follow directions literally with eyes and hands, with but little real cerebration.

An Experimental Study Of Variations In Breath Pressure In The Vocal Vibrato, J. H. Tiffin Jan 1928

An Experimental Study Of Variations In Breath Pressure In The Vocal Vibrato, J. H. Tiffin

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This problem constitutes a part of the experimental work in the psychology of music whose ultimate aim is to discover the objective criteria for artistic performance in vocal and instrumental music. Metfessel has shown, by making graphic representations of the voices of several famous singers, that artistic vocal production almost invariably contains a vibrato, which may be defined as a frequency-intensity fluctuation occurring in a regular periodicity usually not more than eight and one-half times or less than five and one-half times per second, and seldom covering a range of more than one full tone.

The Use Of The Words Heart, Mind, Soul And Spirit, O. M. Norlie Jan 1928

The Use Of The Words Heart, Mind, Soul And Spirit, O. M. Norlie

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This paper is a study of how often and in what ways the words heart, mind, soul and spirit are used. They are very familiar words, so familiar that they have lost much of their original meanings. They are often used with great looseness and overload the sentence in the form of tautology or verbosity, burying the thought beneath their rubbish.

New Developments In The Tonoscope: Measurements On Correct Intonation In Singing, H. M. Williams Jan 1928

New Developments In The Tonoscope: Measurements On Correct Intonation In Singing, H. M. Williams

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A new modification of the Seashore tonoscope has been developed, similar to the phonograph form already described, using the phonograph motor as a source of power but having a new scale which covers a whole octave, in steps of tenths of a tone. The instrument may be read in terms of twentieths of a tone. These units were chosen because they are close to the sensory limits for interval discrimination and because such units are comparable from one octave to another.
