Influences On Learning Of Tests Composed Of True And False Statements And Direct Questions, E. O. Finkenbinder Jan 1931

Influences On Learning Of Tests Composed Of True And False Statements And Direct Questions, E. O. Finkenbinder

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Eighty points in psychology were written in each of the four types of questions, mentioned in the title, and presented to 92 college students at three different times within six weeks to see which type of question would be attended by the greatest amount of learning and also which would be retained best. There were four groups of students. Each had all four types of questions, but no two groups had any one of the questions in the same type. If one group had a true statement of a given question, another group had that same point presented in a …

A New Scientific Musical Staff, Carl E. Seashore Jan 1931

A New Scientific Musical Staff, Carl E. Seashore

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The psychological laboratory in the University of Iowa is conducting a number of studies in the psychology of music, laying scientific foundations for the theory and practice of the art. To make these scientific findings in the interpretation of vocal and instrumental music as actually rendered, it has been necessary to design a scientific type of musical score. This has been built as closely as possible in musical terminology but is so designed as to show in great detail how the notes are actually sung and played. For example, instead of indicating the note "C" by the usual musical notation, …

Basic Differences In Pitch, Intensity, And Time Between Good And Poor Voices During Speech, Elwood Murray, Joseph Tiffin Jan 1931

Basic Differences In Pitch, Intensity, And Time Between Good And Poor Voices During Speech, Elwood Murray, Joseph Tiffin

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This investigation involves the photography of pitch, intensity, and duration changes in about 80 poor speaking voices and 60 good speaking voices to ascertain basic differences that will indicate procedures for remedial purposes. The voices studied were the best and the poorest among 970 freshmen at the University of Iowa as rated and described by speech pathologists of the university staff. By means of a procedure worked out by Tiffin and others, a synonymous intensity, a pitch, and duration record of each syllable is photographed on a single strip of sensitized paper six inches wide.

A Study Of A Class Of Twenty Failing Students At Iowa State College, J. E. Evans Jan 1930

A Study Of A Class Of Twenty Failing Students At Iowa State College, J. E. Evans

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

During the winter quarter of 1930 fifty men engineering students from the freshman class of 1929 were registered in a class in which methods of study were discussed. This class met twice a week during the term. At the close of the fall term these students had attracted the attention of the scholarship committee because of poor work. All students in the group had failed or conditioned part of their work. If the scholarship committee had followed its regular procedure these students would have been eliminated from the college because of poor academic work.

The Psychology Of Division, H. A. Jeep Jan 1930

The Psychology Of Division, H. A. Jeep

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Recent attempts to clarify the subject of long division point to the fact that it is difficult. All data considered, we may say that it is the hardest block in the elementary school curriculum. Long division is especially difficult for the fourth-grader. It is apparent that the multiplicity of skills accounts for much of the learning difficulty. Because there are no infallible rules to follow, long division approaches the problem solving situation. In a sense, every example in long division tends to become a distinct problem in itself.
