A Comparison Of Two Methods Of College Instruction, Norma V. Scheidemann Jan 1928

A Comparison Of Two Methods Of College Instruction, Norma V. Scheidemann

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The literature on the subject of college methods of instruction is replete with theoretic discussions and treatments. Studies devoted to scientific appraisal of specific methods, however, are few in number. The constant demand for efficiency in dealing with the rapidly increasing college enrollment necessitates scientific measurement of the effectiveness of particular methods.

An Audio-Oscillator Technique In The Study Of Beating Intertones, Ingvald B. Hauge Jan 1928

An Audio-Oscillator Technique In The Study Of Beating Intertones, Ingvald B. Hauge

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In a previous study of the beating complex by the writer two electrically driven tuning forks having frequencies of 256 d.v. and 244 d.v. respectively were used as the source of the tones. The intensities of the two tones could be valued independently from maximum to minimum by means of rheostats. The sound was conducted to the observer in a sound proof room by means of rubber tubes. When the two primary tones had equal intensities two beating intertones were heard. The pitch of one was near the upper primary while the pitch of the other was near the lower …

Some Aspects Of The Problem Of Fatigue, Christian A. Ruckmick Jan 1928

Some Aspects Of The Problem Of Fatigue, Christian A. Ruckmick

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In general fatigue is introspectively describable in terms of kinaesthetic relaxation and low attentive ebb of ideas with an affective aspect of indifference, sometimes bordering on mild pleasantness. Galvanic responses taken by both the Hathaway apparatus and a highly sensitive D'Arsonval galvanometer show marked individual differences with a general tendency toward lower bodily resistance under fatigue. Two types of fatigue are distinguished: cognitive fatigue and bodily or physical fatigue. Under some experimental conditions both types may be combined. The galvanometric response varies with each type. Muscular fatigue, due probably to continued residual twitchings and tremblings, tends to show increased response, …

The Experimental Psychology Of The Preschool Child, Beth L. Wellman Jan 1928

The Experimental Psychology Of The Preschool Child, Beth L. Wellman

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Since the establishment of the first preschool psychological laboratory in 1921, the Iowa Child Welfare Research Station has been conducting, as one part of the program in the mental development of young children, a series of experiments that have been repeated, extended and amplified from year to year. These experiments have been planned to afford detailed analyses of performance and the evaluation of psychological processes rather than test standards or the clinical diagnosis of a particular child.

An Objective Approach To The Study Of Certain Emotions, Emily Patterson Jan 1927

An Objective Approach To The Study Of Certain Emotions, Emily Patterson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Last year a qualitative and quantitative study of the emotions was made, emphasizing those of fear and startle. On theoretical grounds the emotion which seemed naturally to follow these was surprise, for often the emotion of surprise was closely allied in the introspective reports and in the technical procedure of arousing the several emotions. In the literature little is said about surprise. Almost always it is described as a comparatively mild emotion. Watson does not mention it among his primary emotions and few other authors consider it among the important emotions. In popular literature, however, the word is frequently found …

The Phase-Theory As A Time Theory In Sound Localization, Otis C. Trimble Jan 1927

The Phase-Theory As A Time Theory In Sound Localization, Otis C. Trimble

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In a preliminary study of the phenomena of localization by the method of temporal difference of arrival of sound at the two ears, we find results which so nearly coincide with results obtained by Stewart (1) and by Halverson (3) who studied the problem by means of continuous sounds of varying phase relations at the ears, that we feel justified in presenting here the phase-theory as a time-theory in sound localization.

The Mode Of Vibration Of The Human Vocal Cords, Wolfgang Metzger Jan 1927

The Mode Of Vibration Of The Human Vocal Cords, Wolfgang Metzger

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Observation: Some of the models of the larynx used since the experiments of Johannes Mueller (when observed through the stroboscope) show transverse and alternate vibration. The question arises as to whether this is the mode of vibration of the real vocal cords or whether they rather vibrate synchronously and more in the lateral than in the transverse direction, as was assumed before.

General Bodily Tonus Of Stutterers And Non-Stutterers, Leo B. Fagan Jan 1927

General Bodily Tonus Of Stutterers And Non-Stutterers, Leo B. Fagan

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Using an apparatus devised to measure muscular tonus as indicated by the resistance offered to an unexpected blow against the back of the free swinging hand, the muscular tone of stutterers and non-stutterers was studied under several conditions. For stutterers the conditions were (1) silence, (2) stuttering, (3) normal unobstructed speech; for non-stutterers (1) silence, (2) normal speech.

The Relation Of Certain Medical And Physical Data To Scholastic Success, Frederic S. Beebee Jan 1927

The Relation Of Certain Medical And Physical Data To Scholastic Success, Frederic S. Beebee

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The purpose of this study is to find what factors, if any, in physical development, habits, medical history, medical examination, and physical efficiency are of significance in relation to scholastic standing. It is based on the records of two groups of 1925-1926 male freshmen. The first group was composed of those men receiving the highest grade-point averages in the entire class of nearly 700. The other group was composed of those men in the class receiving the lowest grade-point averages during the same period. The group receiving high averages numbered fifty-two. The group receiving low averages numbered fifty-four. As selected, …

An Electrical Stimulus Which Can Be Accurately Measured, Thomas H. Howells Jan 1927

An Electrical Stimulus Which Can Be Accurately Measured, Thomas H. Howells

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The difficulty encountered in the past with any technique involving the use of an electrical stimulus has been that of obtaining a stimulating current which could at once be easily varied and accurately measured. In order to make it possible to vary the necessarily high voltage involved, an induction coil or transformer was usually used as the source of electrical current. Since these instruments have an alternating current output it is therefore difficult to obtain a meter capable of measuring the very small current that can be used as a stimulant. The ordinary A. C. meters are not adapted for …

A Study Of The Unsuccessful College Student, E. O. Finkenbinder Jan 1927

A Study Of The Unsuccessful College Student, E. O. Finkenbinder

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This study attempts to discover (1) by the use of tests, the student's mental ability, (2) by observation of him at work, the type of procedure he employs in his study, (3) by the analysis of his daily routine, his economy of energy expended, and (4) by the analysis of his college grades in comparison with his ability, which subjects are most successfully carried by him, best fitted to his type of mentality and habits of study.

The Influence Of The Size Of Retinal Image And Of Perspective Upon The Visual Perception Of Distance: A Comparative Study, Ruth Updegraff Jan 1927

The Influence Of The Size Of Retinal Image And Of Perspective Upon The Visual Perception Of Distance: A Comparative Study, Ruth Updegraff

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Upon the assumption that visual perceptions are integrated in character and that some kind of an empirical basis is presupposed in their formation, we have attempted to segregate, for experimental purposes, two of the more commonly acknowledged factors in the estimation of relative distances. Both of these factors may be said to be functions of the stimulus, rather than of the response. A comparison of their relative influence in the distance perceptions of young children and adults, as well as a study of acuity in these perceptions, is the object of this investigation.

Apparatus And Procedure Used In Determining The Nature Of Beating Intertones, Ingvald B. Hauge Jan 1927

Apparatus And Procedure Used In Determining The Nature Of Beating Intertones, Ingvald B. Hauge

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Best results are obtained by using two electrically driven forks whose pitches are 256 dv. and 245 dv. when the currents admitted to each fork are regulated by means of rheostats. All the apparatus is placed in a sound-proof room; tubes conduct the sound to another room where the Os observe. The essential part of the procedure consists in varying the intensities of vibration of the two forks by means of the rheostats and getting introspective descriptions of what is heard in each situation.
