Child Care Options: Impact On Child Development, Jane Frances Biga Wilson Jan 1986

Child Care Options: Impact On Child Development, Jane Frances Biga Wilson

Graduate Research Papers

The desire to establish learning environments that are both stimulating and responsive and which will contribute to the cognitive, emotional, language, physical, and social development of the preschool child is the goal of parents and educators alike. Piaget proposed that children pass through a series of successive stages and that they develop intellectually by acting and reacting with their world (Travers, 1982). This particular learning theory implies that an enriched environment would encourage intellectual development and has provided a rationale for early child care and education.

Improving Instructional Design Consultation Through The Use Of Nonverbal Communication, Julia K. Smith Brooks Jan 1986

Improving Instructional Design Consultation Through The Use Of Nonverbal Communication, Julia K. Smith Brooks

Graduate Research Papers

Communication skills play a critical role in the instructional design (ID) process. As an instructional materials developer, the instructional designer must rely heavily on verbal communication skills; as an instructional consultant, the instructional designer must rely heavily on nonverbal communication skills. The importance of nonverbal communication skills is underscored in the literature, which suggests that approximately 90% of the message in a two-way communication is based on nonverbal elements of the message (Englesman, 1974; Garrison, 1984). Thus, an effective instructional designer must develop the ability to interpret and send nonverbal messages properly.

A Selected Cross-Cultural Study Of Piaget's Stage Theory Of Cognitive Development, Jie-Qi Chen Jan 1986

A Selected Cross-Cultural Study Of Piaget's Stage Theory Of Cognitive Development, Jie-Qi Chen

Graduate Research Papers

The large number of research studies which have been published on the cross-cultural implications of Piaget's cognitive development theory are extremely varied. This study attempts to classify them into three areas: sequence of cognitive development, rate of cognitive development, and the influential factors of cognitive development, in order to verify the universality of Piaget's theory and put forward some suggestions about educational practice. The review and analysis of related literature indicates that first, the universality of the sequence of cognitive development only deals with sensorimotor and pre-operation stages rather than concrete and formal operational stages. Second, the age of acquisition …

The Dance Of The School Psychologist, Steven John Iverson Jan 1986

The Dance Of The School Psychologist, Steven John Iverson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This is a historical/philosophical critique thesis. Its content and organization differ substantially from the typical research-oriented thesis in school psychology. This paper explores several primary themes in the ongoing development of school psychology as a profession and the issue of the philosophical base for measurement processes used by school psychologists. Chapter 1 reviews societal trends and actions which have facilitated the profession's development, and major role definitions that have come from within the profession. The chapter culminates in a review of surveys which studied the percentage of time spent on various functions performed by school psychologists. Assessment-related activities (testing, report …

Plato's Crito: A Speech Act And Structuralist Analysis For Performance, Gary Gerard Gute Jan 1986

Plato's Crito: A Speech Act And Structuralist Analysis For Performance, Gary Gerard Gute

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Although scholars recognize many of Plato's early dialogues as works of significant dramatic merit, few attempts have been made to either systematically analyze them for performance or to dramatize them in their entirety. A traditional Aristotelian analysis does not facilitate bringing the dialogues to fruition in theatrical performance because of their lack of physical, external action. This study, recognizing the dramatic potential of Plato's Crito, undertakes an analysis of the dialogue for the purpose of performance . Two methodologies are applied: Speech Act and Structuralist Analyses. The study culminates in a dramatic production of the Crito.

According to speech act …

Speech-Language Clinicians’ Responses To Client Progress, Cheryl Lynn Ferguson Jan 1986

Speech-Language Clinicians’ Responses To Client Progress, Cheryl Lynn Ferguson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Training institutions for speech-language pathologists endeavor to provide student clinicians with a wide variety of academic and clinical experiences. To that end, the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) also requires that students receive sufficient exposure to a wide variety of speech-language disorders in order to meet certification requirements. However, the notion that student clinicians should experience successful dismissal is not addressed by training institutions or the literature. The purpose of this investigation was to determine under what conditions students at the University of Northern Iowa (UNI) Speech and Hearing Clinic dismiss clients and to find out how many of them experience …

The Relationship Between Paternal Characteristics And Sons' Achievement In Reading, M. Christine Bruder Jan 1986

The Relationship Between Paternal Characteristics And Sons' Achievement In Reading, M. Christine Bruder

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study was an exploration of paternal variables which may be related to sons' achievement in reading. Of a total possible population of 123 father-son dyads, 47 participated. The sons were fourth and fifth graders in a Catholic school system in a small midwestern metropolitan area. The instruments used were the Bem Sex-Role Inventory (BSRI), the Child-Rearing Practices Report (CRPR) and the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills (ITBS) "Reading Comprehension" and "Vocabulary" subtests. There was no significant relationship between paternal gender role identity and child-rearing practices, nor was there any relationship between paternal gender-role identity and sons' achievement in reading. …

Development Of A Gating System For The "H" Process Of Metal Casting, Dean A. Boyce Jan 1985

Development Of A Gating System For The "H" Process Of Metal Casting, Dean A. Boyce

Graduate Research Papers

The "H" Process of metal casting uses a unique gating system that controls the flow of molten metal during the casting process. A feeder/runner bar serving each casting is the vital element in the "H" Process. Available information on the "H" Process is not very specific about the runner system configuration. This study will develop a gating system for use with the "H" Process using the available information and principles of conventional gating practice.

Men In Midlife: A Literature Review, Gary Wayne Cox Jan 1985

Men In Midlife: A Literature Review, Gary Wayne Cox

Graduate Research Papers

According to Newton (1983), midlife "is a time for appraisal and review, a time to assess possibilities for change, and create new choices that will form the basis for a good-enough life in middle adulthood (p. 448). Levinson (1978) describes midlife transition as being a bridge between early adulthood and middle adulthood, when men come to terms with their past and prepare for the future. He feels that everyone goes through transition periods in their lives at various life stages. For some, midlife is a time for crisis. Brim (1976) noted that this crisis is both rapid and substantial, resulting …

Methods Of Implementing General Physical Access Guidelines For The Physically Disabled, And Implementation Techniques Regarding Academic Access For The Learning Disabled, As Mandated By The Rehabilitation Act Of 1973, Paul H. Felix

Graduate Research Papers

In September, 1973, the United States Congress passed a law which prohibits discrimination on the basis of mental or physical handicaps in every federally-funded program within the United States. The Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Section 504, states: No otherwise qualified handicapped individual in the United States ••• shall, solely by reason of his handicap, be excluded from the participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance (United States statutes at large, 1973, Appendix A). Institutions must comply with this law, or face losing federal funds.

A Literature Review Of The Association Between Adolescent Suicide And Family Communication, Robert Kevan Curren Jan 1985

A Literature Review Of The Association Between Adolescent Suicide And Family Communication, Robert Kevan Curren

Graduate Research Papers

Suicide, in general, has been described by Durkheim {1951) as "all cases of death resulting directly or indirectly from a positive or negative act of the victim himself, which he knows will produce this result (p. 44). Adolescent suicide has become a national concern within the past five years because of the steady rise in both suicide attempts and completions. Currently, suicide is the third leading cause of death for 15-24 year olds. Early reports indicate that suicide may now be ranked second, only behind accidents, for the cause of adolescent death {Greuling & DeBlassie, 1980). In addition, the Statistical …

Counseling Battered Wives, Phyllis Renee Jones Jan 1985

Counseling Battered Wives, Phyllis Renee Jones

Graduate Research Papers

The relationship between husbands and wives is almost identical to that between parents and children (Ni earthy, 1982). The relationship is identical in the following ways: the husband has the so-called "right" to beat his wife and the parents have the "right" to beat their children. The husbands have the right to batter their wives because of power, authority, hierarchy in the family structure and legal rights. According to Ni earthy (1982) a judge once stated: "If no permanent injury has been inflicted nor malice nor dangerous violence shown by the husband, it is better to draw the curtain, shut …

Significant Factors In Adolescent Suicide And Subintentional Suicide: A Literature Review, Kirk Ryan Anderson Jan 1985

Significant Factors In Adolescent Suicide And Subintentional Suicide: A Literature Review, Kirk Ryan Anderson

Graduate Research Papers

Adolescent suicide has become a national concern within the past five years, due to the steady rise in both suicide attempts and completions (Giovaccini, 1981). Although the rate of adolescent suicide attempts appears to be on the upsurge, most of the literature focuses on adult attempters or deals with attempts across all ages (Topal & Reznikoff, 1982). Giovaccini (1981) reports that the adolescent suicide rate is nearly thirty three percent higher than that of the overall population. Rbsenkrantz (1978) found adolescents make many more attempts per successful suicide than do adults. The ratio for adolescents has been estimated as high …

The Effects Of Unemployment On The Family, Vikki Lynn Roberts Jan 1985

The Effects Of Unemployment On The Family, Vikki Lynn Roberts

Graduate Research Papers

Unemployment is a stressor event that affects the functioning and homeostasis of the entire family system. The sources of stress are a function of the material scarcity brought on by financial loss, the unemployed family member's loss of the breadwinner role, and the family unit's loss of status. In addition, the re-employment process imposes stress on the system. The effects of unemployment are apparent when the family is conceptualized as a social system where each member is a subsystem that affects and is affected by each of the other subsystem family members. Theoretically, the family system maintains a balance or …
