Synthesis Of 2,4-Heptadiene, Fred W. Raths, R. L. Shriner Jan 1953

Synthesis Of 2,4-Heptadiene, Fred W. Raths, R. L. Shriner

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

2,4-Heptadiene can exist in four isomeric cis-trans forms; a fact which probably accounts for the different physical constants reported in the literature. The present synthesis involved a high temperature pyrolysis as the final step, in the hope that only one isomer would be formed under these conditions.

Evaluation Of Proportions And Size Of Certain Moving Signs, Owen A. Brooks Jan 1953

Evaluation Of Proportions And Size Of Certain Moving Signs, Owen A. Brooks

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The "golden section" has generally been accepted as the most preferred height-to-width ratio that can be obtained in a rectangle. Little is known of the origin of this acceptance. There has been a limited amount of experimental work done to either uphold or refute the position held. Rendahl (2) failed to confirm the acceptance of the "golden section" by most of her subjects. On the other hand, both Shipley (3) and Thompson (4) have upheld the acceptance. Most former studies dealing with preference of proportions have been concerned with stationary signs. The present investigation has to do with moving signs. …

A Self-Survey Of The Iowa State Teachers College, Iowa State Teachers College

History of Education Book Gallery

The Self-Survey Report of Iowa State Teachers College which is presented in these pages is the work of about one hundred members of the faculty whose names appear on a separate sheet. Because the completed reports of the various committees were in some instances longer than seemed necessary, some condensations and omissions were suggested by Dr. Leo Goggin, who read the entire manuscript before it was mimeographed, and by the undersigned. It is hoped that the making of these changes has not resulted in the omission of material which should have been included or in distortion of the report of …

The North Central Helicosporae, Royall T. Moore Jan 1953

The North Central Helicosporae, Royall T. Moore

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The Helicosporae are members of the form-order Moniales and encompass all those fungi that bear conidia coiled spirally in two or three dimensions. With the exception of the genera Helicoceras (3) and Drepanoconis (2) (not represented in this area), they are saprobic. These saprobic members form colonies that range from extensive, loose, arachnoid mats to small pulvinate masses scattered over the substrate. Twenty-six species distributed through seven genera are recognized as occurring in the north central United States.

Trimitus Parvus Grasse (Protozoa, Mastigophora) From A Garter Snake, Thamnophis Radix, L. H. Saxe, Eugene M. Schmidt

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Reptiles collected in the vicinity of the Iowa Lakeside Laboratory, Dickinson County, Iowa, during the summer of 1950, were examined for helminths by Burnham (1951) and for protozoa by Schmidt (1954). lvlonocercomonas colubrorum, Trichomonas batrachorum and Haemogregarina sp. were found in both Thamnophis radix and T. ordinatus parietalis. An enteric flagellate of the genus Trimitus was found in a single specimen of T. radix. Special consideration is herein given to Trimitus because though this genus has been reported from North American amphibians and reptiles it appears that neither descriptions nor figures have been published, and also, because there …

A Study Of What 1,085 Parents Think Of Selected Areas Of Mason City Public School Education, Evan Dale Foster Jan 1953

A Study Of What 1,085 Parents Think Of Selected Areas Of Mason City Public School Education, Evan Dale Foster

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The public school was established to educate youth; and the state has delegated responsibility to school boards, administrators, and teachers for the accomplishment of this end. While the citizens through their representatives create school laws the local community retains many means for determining the program of its own public school. Thus it would seem highly desirable for public school personnel to know the opinions held by the parents about various parts of the school program.

The Raman Effect Of Cis And Trans-Decalin, Geo. Glockler, Jo-Yun Tung Jan 1952

The Raman Effect Of Cis And Trans-Decalin, Geo. Glockler, Jo-Yun Tung

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Several of the physical properties of liquid cis-decalin seem to change at about 55°C. The surface tension-temperature curve for example shows a change in slope at about this temperature. It was thought of interest to study the Raman effect of the two isomers as a function of temperature in order to find out if the scattering power of the two isomers shows different behavior over the temperature range 25°-75°C. It appears that the scattering of trans-decalin remains about the same over this temperature range while the cisisomer shows increased scattering at the higher temperature. Some ideas are expressed that might …

Property Variations In The Peorian Loess Of Southwestern Iowa, D.T. Davidson, R. L. Handy Jan 1952

Property Variations In The Peorian Loess Of Southwestern Iowa, D.T. Davidson, R. L. Handy

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

It is widely recognized in Iowa that there are not enough economically available supplies of sand, gravel, and rock in the state to meet the road building needs of the present and future. While certain counties have been favored more than others with aggregate deposits, this statement applies to the entire state, if a long-range view point is taken. Many other sections of the United States, as well as many foreign countries, are faced with a similar shortage. A solution to this problem is to learn how to treat or process readily available materials to increase their all-weather stability for …

On The Mechanism Of Protein Synthesis, Theodore I. Bieber Jan 1952

On The Mechanism Of Protein Synthesis, Theodore I. Bieber

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Our knowledge about the mechanism of protein synthesis, one of the most important biochemical problems, is still extremely limited. It is evident from the very nature of proteins, their complexity and specificity, that the problem of protein synthesis presents numerous aspects. Theories of a template method of protein synthesis in the sense of Langmuir-Schaefer or Pauling are designed to explain the specificity of proteins. This paper will deal with only one aspect of protein synthesis, the mode of formation of the amide (peptide) linkage, which is the most typical linkage of every protein. In view of the close connection between …

The Origin Of Fusain, Herbert Skolnick Jan 1952

The Origin Of Fusain, Herbert Skolnick

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

35. The origin

Fusain has been described by various workers as a black, dull, fibrous, friable charcoal-like material which readily breaks down to dust and exhibits a cellular structure when examined microscopically. According to White (1926, p. 267) fusain or as it has been known to others; mother of coal, mineral charcoal, carbonized wood, fusit, or faserkohle is composed of all kinds of woody material and occurs in post-Devonian coals and in sediments of all kinds.

Nitrate Adsorbed On Pumice As A Nitrogen Source For Plant Growth, Wayne J. Mcilrath Jan 1951

Nitrate Adsorbed On Pumice As A Nitrogen Source For Plant Growth, Wayne J. Mcilrath

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In recent years it has been shown, through the use of commercial ion-exchange material, that plants are able to utilize nitrate ions incorporated in soil or nutrient culture in an adsorbed state (Schlenkler, 1940, 1942; Converse, Gammon and Sayre, 1943; Graham and Albrecht, 1943; Jenny, 1946; Arnon and Grossenbacher, 1947; Hunter, 1948). In view of the apparent adsorptive power of pumice (Veller and Arutyunyan, 1933), it was of interest to determine whether this material could be utilized in plant nutrition studies to supply nitrogen as adsorbed nitrate. Although preliminary experimentation showed that the nitrate fixing capacity of pumice was very …

Determination Of Calcite-Dolomite Ratios In Carbonate Rocks, Ralph W. Lawson Jan 1950

Determination Of Calcite-Dolomite Ratios In Carbonate Rocks, Ralph W. Lawson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

When studying a large number of carbonate rock samples, the usual methods for determining the calcite or dolomite content are time-consuming and tedious. To identify and count grains in thin-section is difficult for the most experienced. If sections or powders of the rock are subjected to various stains or dyes grain counts, still, must be made. In working with the silver nitrate-potassium chromate method (Lemberg, 1892), the author noticed a definite difference in the colors produced in several samples of powdered limestone by the stain. In this method the calcite is stained a very dusky red, whereas the dolomite is …

A Post-Loveland Pre-Iowan Loess In Western Iowa, John C. Mickelson Jan 1950

A Post-Loveland Pre-Iowan Loess In Western Iowa, John C. Mickelson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The literature concerning the Pleistocene deposits of Iowa does not mention the presence of a loess sheet younger than the Loveland loess and older than the Iowan loess. The writer is of the opinion that such a loess exists in Iowa. The following evidence is presented to substantiate this conclusion. During the summer of 1948 the writer was engaged in a study of the Loveland formation of Iowa under the auspices of the Iowa Geological Survey. During the course of this investigation the presence of a post-Loveland and pre-Iowan loess was revealed in two exposures

Diamond Conduction Counters, Robert K. Willardson Jan 1950

Diamond Conduction Counters, Robert K. Willardson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The intensity of radiation of high energy particles or photons is usually measured by allowing these radiations to ionize the gas molecules in a gas-filled chamber (3). The ions are collected on electrodes and the ion current indicates the intensity of the radiation. Single fast particles give a sharp pulse of ion current. Attempts have been made to use solid bodies in place of the gas-filled chamber (7, 12, 14). The radiation ionizes the solid in a manner similar to that for the gas. Because of its high energy a single particle creates in the crystal a large number of …

An Apparatus To Mleasure Reaction Time Under Mobile Conditions By Radio Control, Reginald N. Kjerland, A. R. Lauer

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Certain types of studies of driving performance require mobile equipment for use in making objective measurements of behavior under actual traffic conditions. Due to the inherent dangers of stationary apparatus being used on the highway it becomes important that satisfactory portable and mobile equipment be used to facilitate objective measurements of drivers in traffic, highway and driving research.

Keeping Employees Informed, Joann Pitcher, Max E. Thompson Jan 1949

Keeping Employees Informed, Joann Pitcher, Max E. Thompson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The widening interest in the topic of communicating with employees is evidenced by the increasing frequency with which articles relevant to this problem may be found in industrial, personnel, and business journals during the last three or four years. This increased incidence of articles indicates that men in management positions are beginning to recognize more and more the importance of keeping their employees informed about the company for which they are working in order to improve morale and job satisfaction, to further community and public relations, and to bring about a greater degree of cooperative efficiency throughout the organization.
