Preliminary Report On The Flora Of Southeastern Iowa-Part Ii., Charles L. Gilly, Malcolm E. Mcdonald Jan 1948

Preliminary Report On The Flora Of Southeastern Iowa-Part Ii., Charles L. Gilly, Malcolm E. Mcdonald

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This paper completes a consideration of the southeastern Iowa specimens in the herbarium of the Parsons College Biology Department. As mentioned in the introductory paragraphs of Part I (Gilly and McDonald 1948), the majority of these specimens were collected by the authors during the years 1933 to 1937; additional collections were made in Jefferson County during the summer of 1946. The Pteridophytes, the single Gymnosperm, the Monocotyledons and the apetalous and polypetalous Dictotyledons were discussed in Part I of this paper. In this second part, a total of 288 species and wellmarked varieties of gamopetalous Dictotyledons, representing the families Monotropaceae …

Raman Tube Filters, Geo. Glockler, John F. Haskin Jan 1948

Raman Tube Filters, Geo. Glockler, John F. Haskin

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A method for the application of plastic filter dopes to Raman tubes was developed. Such filters were devised for isolation of the 4358. A mercury triplet, which was used as the exciting source. Derivatives of nitrobenzene dissolved in a urea-melamine-formaldehyde resin effectively removed the 4047. A pair. During long ex-posures to mercury lamp radiations, these filters darkened. A film of light stable Eastman Acetate Lacquer 390-37-2 served the same purpose. Removal of continuous background was effected by Rhodamine 5GDN Extra in polymethyl methacrylate, Tygon lacquers, cellulose acetate, cellophane, or urea-melamine-formaldehyde resins. An Eastman gelatin filter produced similar results. A filter …

The Address Of The President: Old Wine In New Bottles, Joseph C. Gilman Jan 1947

The Address Of The President: Old Wine In New Bottles, Joseph C. Gilman

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Fungi, such as mushrooms, plant pathogens, molds, and mildews have been known from the time man began to take an interest in his natural surroundings. The plant pathologists cite the Bible for their early records, and we know that mushrooms were a source of inspiration to ancient Roman architects in the adornment of buildings. Their sudden appearance in unexpected places gives them an aura of mystery that enfolds them like a mantle and lends interest to them even today. When we add to these attributes their great diversity of form and color, their beauty and their repulsiveness, their uses and …

The Underlying Philosophy Of The Iowa Secondary School Curriculum Program, W. H. Mcfarland Jan 1947

The Underlying Philosophy Of The Iowa Secondary School Curriculum Program, W. H. Mcfarland

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The Iowa Secondary School Curriculum Program involves providing curriculum materials in all areas of high school instruction. Traditional subject matter areas have been maintained, not because we have assurance that this offers the best procedure in secondary education, but because under present conditions it probably affords the most practical and feasible procedure. The areas treated are broken down as follows: English and speech, language, science, mathematics, social studies, practical arts, fine arts, physical education and health, guidance, and extra-curricular activities.

Action Of Mercuric Chloride Upon Tyrosinase Produced By Various Activators, Joseph Hall Bodine Jan 1945

Action Of Mercuric Chloride Upon Tyrosinase Produced By Various Activators, Joseph Hall Bodine

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Protyrosinase, from the diapause egg of the grasshopper, Melanoplus differentialis, is activated and converted into tyrosinase by a variety of reagents (Bodine and Carlson, 1940). The active enzyme thus produced has recently been shown to possess similar catalytic properties but to differ greatly in its response to high temperatures (Bodine, Tahmisian, Hill, 1944). The effect of high temperatures is probably related to the type of activator employed as well as to the manner in which the protein enzyme complex is broken down or transformed. Inasmuch as HgCl2, acts as an activator of protyrosinase it becomes of some …

Deposition Of Sediment In The Iowa River At Iowa City, Iowa, Troy L. Péwé Jan 1945

Deposition Of Sediment In The Iowa River At Iowa City, Iowa, Troy L. Péwé

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The Iowa River in the vicinity of Iowa City (Fig. 1.) is a mature stream which meanders over the Kansan and Iowa till plains in its course to the Mississippi River. The river, gathering water and sediment from the 3,230 square miles of the drainage basin which lies up stream from Iowa City, flows by as a muddy stream with an average discharge of 1,432 cubic feet per second (Crawford, 1942). Although sometimes heavily charged with sediment, it is on the whole not a heavy suspended sediment carrier as the average concentration of sediment in parts per million over a …
