A Plan For Preparing And Operating A Marionette Theatre At The Junior High School Level, Louis E. Glorfeld

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

It was the purpose of this study to present a workable plan for preparing and operating a marionette theatre at the junior high school level. Although a great deal of material for the construction of the marionette theatre has been published and although the marionette theatre has been used in the junior high school, no material has been written specifically for use in the junior high school. This study presents a simple and workable plan for the operation of a marionette theatre which should be of value to the inexperienced teacher and to the teacher who is limited in facilities …

The Museum At The Iowa State Normal School (State College Of Iowa), Fred Cram Jan 1955

The Museum At The Iowa State Normal School (State College Of Iowa), Fred Cram

Library Documents & Reports (entire collection)

So far as a careful scanning of the catalogs of ISNS reveals, the first mention of a museum occurs in the 1896 issue, where on page 45 we find that “Natural Science has its museum well stocked with minerals, rocks, fossils dried and alcoholic specimens.”

While our Museum has usually been referred to as one of natural history, there has accumulated over the years a miscellaneous collection of other materials. There are items of historical value, such as swords, guns, and uniforms. There are old documents, coins, and curiosities. There are boats and other items from river and sea. Industrial …

Observations On Eimeria From Ambystoma Tigrinum, With Descriptions Of Four New Species, L. H. Saxe Jan 1955

Observations On Eimeria From Ambystoma Tigrinum, With Descriptions Of Four New Species, L. H. Saxe

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

There appear to be only three records of coccidia of the genus Ezmeria from North American Amphibia. Rankin (1937) reported Eimeria ranarum from Ambystoma opacum. Walton (personal communication) says that his record (1942) of Eimeria from Ambystoma is based upon a letter from Dr. Harold Kirby who stated that he had seen E. ranarum from A. opacum. Doran (1953) reported Eimeria grobbeni from Taricha torosa. The author, on several occasions, has noted the presence of coccidian oocysts in the rectal contents of salamanders. Four species of Eimeria have been recognized in material from Ambystoma tigrinum (Green) and will be described …

Critical Analyses Of Selected Works Of American Historical Fiction, 1746-1865, For Teaching Purposes In The Seventh Grade, Lois Allene Bergman Jan 1955

Critical Analyses Of Selected Works Of American Historical Fiction, 1746-1865, For Teaching Purposes In The Seventh Grade, Lois Allene Bergman

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Critical analyses of historical fiction for teaching purposes of the type projected in this study have not been available. Some brief bibliographies of historical fiction were available. However they were inadequate for the purpose underlying this study. There has been a need for more extensive analyses of historical fiction. Many teachers have not had training in selecting books of this type. Consequently, they have had to rely upon descriptions too brief to be adequate tor their needs. Hannah Logasa,1 listed Barney's Barges as a story about the American Navy in the War of 1812. Many things happened to that Navy …

Bismarck And The Triumph Of Kleindeutsch Over Grossdeutsch In The Making Of Germany, Charles J. Hahn Jan 1955

Bismarck And The Triumph Of Kleindeutsch Over Grossdeutsch In The Making Of Germany, Charles J. Hahn

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

It is the purpose of this investigation to determine the reasons why the German state organized on a kleindeutsch basis and the forces which affected this decision. The word kleindeutsch, as it will be used in this investigation, means the territory which comprised Germany in the year 1871 plus the spirit behind the movement to make Germany a state for "pure" Germans. The term grossdeutsch, as it will be used in this investigation, means the territory which comprised Germany in 1871 plus Austria and the spirit behind the movement for one large federal government which might include some non-German people.

The Nature Of The So-Called Electric Organs In Ostracoderms, George M. Robertson Jan 1954

The Nature Of The So-Called Electric Organs In Ostracoderms, George M. Robertson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

There seems to be something about working with fossils which loosens the imagination, and one of the ways in which the emancipated imagination goes to work is in trying to determine the functions of problematic structures. In general we believe we are justified in assuming that the structures we identify as orbits in the skulls of fossil fishes housed eyes. Most of us would also agree to accept and use identification of structures closely resembling what we find in modern forms, such as otic capsules, nasal organs, lateral line systems, portions of the brain-case, etc. Other structural features are not …

A Review Of The Interstate Park, Wisconsin Bison Find, Harris A. Palmer Jan 1954

A Review Of The Interstate Park, Wisconsin Bison Find, Harris A. Palmer

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In the fall of 1936, members of a C.C.C. Company engaged in excavating a ditch, uncovered the partial remains of several extinct bison in Interstate Park in Northwestern Wisconsin, about 40 miles northeast of St. Paul. The site, located in Polk County and known locally as Mountain Meadow, was a former peat bog situated in an area of drift deposited by the Grantsburg sublobe of the Keewatin ice sheet. The drift has been mapped as Mankato. The find was reported immediately to Dr. Alonzo Pond, an archeologist formerly of Beloit College, who at the time was connected with the National …

The 1953 Crown And Stem Rust Epidemic Of Oats In Iowa, Arden F. Sherf Jan 1954

The 1953 Crown And Stem Rust Epidemic Of Oats In Iowa, Arden F. Sherf

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Rather than to rely on the efforts of historians of the future, this paper will record the devastating oat rust epidemic that occurred in Iowa in 1953. Pertinent facts regarding the initiation, development, geographic distribution, and final loss estimates due to oat crown rust and stem rust will be presented. Attempts will be made to correlate rust spread and development with available meteorological data. · Rusts have attacked cereals for all of recorded history. Some of the oldest rust records are to be found in the Bible where Hebrew writers frequently mention rusts, smuts, and blights on their grain crops. …

Public High Schools Offering Chemistry In Iowa, James W. Kercheval Jan 1954

Public High Schools Offering Chemistry In Iowa, James W. Kercheval

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In a Report on a Survey of Science Instruction in the High Schools of Iowa1, the author presented data based upon reports from 390 or 46% of the 852 senior high schools in Iowa in 1951- 52. Since that time further effort has brought additional data from all but 38 of the present 849 high schools. This leaves but 4.5% unreported at this time. The following report covers data collected over the years 1951 through 1954. The information at hand shows that one semester m more of chemistry is offered either on alternate years or is offered each …

Development And Preliminary Evaluation Of A Test Of Mechanical Ingenuity, Harold Martinek Jan 1954

Development And Preliminary Evaluation Of A Test Of Mechanical Ingenuity, Harold Martinek

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

There are many phases of industry that need the maximal use of high level personnel. Perhaps the most important of these is engineering, particularly machine design engineering. Although there are many machine designers, only a small percentage can be described as truly creative; these few individuals, however, are among the most important men in industry whether the nation is at war or at peace. Some men may have been "born creative", but they probably did not reach their maximum usefulness until they had received experience or training or both. If industry could predict who is potentially creative without waiting some …

The Changing Status Of The Country Superintendent Of Schools In Iowa, Dwight Gene Bode Jan 1954

The Changing Status Of The Country Superintendent Of Schools In Iowa, Dwight Gene Bode

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The county superintendent has long been recognized as part of the of the educational organization in the United States. The mixed ancestry of the office of county superintendent has resulted in a position whose functions and responsibilities differ widely from state to state.

The forty-eight states may be grouped into three general categories with reference to the county as a school unit: states having no county school organization, county-unit states, and states in which the county is the intermediate agency. There are nine states having no county school superintendent. Six of the states having no county superintendent are organized in …
