A Study In Philosophy And Goals Of Science Education, Dale Bunsen Jan 1969

A Study In Philosophy And Goals Of Science Education, Dale Bunsen

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

An inquiry into the philosophical area of any human endeavor results in the framing of "why" questions. Why study science at all?, naturally becomes one of these questions which has great relevance to the field of science education. "How" and "what" questions generally use up most of the science educator's time and efforts. This is not an attempt to negate the importance of "how" and "what" questions (they are the stuff of science); rather, it is an attempt to determine what the case for science is in our educational process.

Conservation And The Biology Teacher, M. E. Stempel

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Conservation practices are based on a need to retain the best features of soils, plants, and animals. These are the raw materials of commerce. Commercialization has accelerated until most land areas are now exploited.

The Imbalance Of Nature, Chalmer J. Roy Jan 1969

The Imbalance Of Nature, Chalmer J. Roy

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

On this fantastically dynamic planet, what can be the meaning of the balance of nature? The dynamics of the atmosphere, of the oceans, and of the solid earth show no signs of reaching an equilibrium, a condition of no change. Nature does not obey laws. The so-called laws of nature are human constructs, designed to explain observed relationships and phenomena.

What Do I Do Now, Teacher?????, Milbert H. Krohn Jan 1969

What Do I Do Now, Teacher?????, Milbert H. Krohn

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Fifteen years of science fairs has brought me into contact with excitement, danger, success, failure, and freakishness such as never could be known if the spontaneity and creativity of youth had not been challenged. The writer is not sure whether science fairs are necessary or not. Sometimes, after they are over, the justification for another is like hitting yourself on the head with a hammer because it feels so good when you stop. Let's go back, readers, to some things in the past.

Nature Of The Antinatriuretic Action Of Growth Hormone, Ronald R. Bach Jan 1969

Nature Of The Antinatriuretic Action Of Growth Hormone, Ronald R. Bach

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Three interrelated experiments were initiated to study growth hormone's stimulation of urinary sodium retention. First a dose-response curve was determined by administration of known dosages of growth hormone or the vehicle to groups of rats. Urine was collected from four to six hours after administration. In a second experiment, the relationship between time and degree of response to growth hormone was determined. Urine was collected from 0-2, 2-4, 4-6, 6-8, 8-10, 12-14, 16-18, and 20-22 hours after administration. Sodium excretion was not altered in the 0-2 hour collection period. Significant retention took place in both the 2-4 and 4-6 hour …

Natural History Of The Two Crayfish Of Northwestern Iowa, Orconectes Virilis And Orconectes Immunis, Margaret J. Caldwell, Richard V. Bovbjerg Jan 1969

Natural History Of The Two Crayfish Of Northwestern Iowa, Orconectes Virilis And Orconectes Immunis, Margaret J. Caldwell, Richard V. Bovbjerg

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The only two crayfish inhabiting northwestern Iowa, O. immunis and O. virilis, are ecologically isolated to pond and stream habitats respectively. The former burrows deeply to escape summer drought and winter cold, while the latter does not burrow extensively and apparently overwinters buried in stream beds. The pattern of reproductive events is basically similar in the two species, but O. virilis generally lags several weeks behind O. immunis. The pond species often matures in one summer under good conditions and may lay eggs in either fall or spring; the stream species is less flexible, not maturing until the end …

Etymology: A Plea For Its Use In Early Education, Charles J. Ellis Jan 1969

Etymology: A Plea For Its Use In Early Education, Charles J. Ellis

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

My belief, based upon watching numerous students mature at Iowa State University, is, if etymology were stressed in primary and secondary schools, more older students would feel less burdened with so-called big, scientific names as well as nonscientific terms.

Growth Of The White-Mouse Gastrocnemius Muscle I. In Terrestrial Gravity, Charles C. Wunder, John W. C. Bird Jan 1969

Growth Of The White-Mouse Gastrocnemius Muscle I. In Terrestrial Gravity, Charles C. Wunder, John W. C. Bird

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The gastrocnemius muscle from white mice (Swiss Webster, female; NLW, male and female; varying in age from 6 to 13 weeks and in body mass from 8 to 36 gm) were analyzed by means of Huxley's Equation for Heterauxic Growth where double logarithmic plots were performed of muscle size as a function of body mass. These mice had been grown in normal gravity. Relative wet mass, relative dry mass, and percent dry mass did not display significant changes with body mass. Percent noncollagen nitrogen [NCN] in the dry muscle, however, did show an effect which was not significantly different from …

Notes On Iowa Tardigrades, Ronald G. Kimmel, Paul A. Meglitsch Jan 1969

Notes On Iowa Tardigrades, Ronald G. Kimmel, Paul A. Meglitsch

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Five species of tardigrades, Macrobiotus areolatus, M. islandicus M. hufelandii, Milnesium tardigradum, and Hypsibius tuberculata are reported from lichens growing on Iowa trees. Factors influencing tardigrade distribution are discussed, especially with reference to the lichen species represented in the samples, and the tree substrate. Hypsibius tuberculata was found to be most abundant about 2 meters above ground level, and to become less abundant below, while the other four species were found to be most abundant near the ground and decline steadily with increasing height. No clear evidence of preference of northern, southern, eastern, or western exposures was found.

The Field Of Speech, Douglas Ehninger Jan 1969

The Field Of Speech, Douglas Ehninger

Iowa Journal of Communication

Teachers of speech, even more perhaps than teachers in other field, occasionally need to stop and take stock. What, after all, is this subject or discipline that we profess? On what basis does its claim to independence rest? What is the proper business of a department of speech? What, ideally, should the study of speech entail? What areas of investigation and research are our special property? In what ways does training in speech contribute to a liberal education?

Some Ultrastructural Aspects Of Spermatogenesis And Sperm Morphology In The Brine Shrimp Artemia Salina Leach (Crustacea: Branchiopoda), George Gordon Brown Jan 1969

Some Ultrastructural Aspects Of Spermatogenesis And Sperm Morphology In The Brine Shrimp Artemia Salina Leach (Crustacea: Branchiopoda), George Gordon Brown

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Although crustacean diversity has stimulated research enormously, sperm morphology and functional aspects have received little attention recently as compared to earlier times (e.g., Gilson, 1886; Retzius, 1909; Wilson, 1928). The exceptions include primarily the malacostracan spermatozoa (e.g., isopods, Reger, 1964; decapods, Moses, 1961; Brown, 1966a; Anderson and Ellis, 1967; Chevaillier, 1966, 1967; Vaughn, 1968), although other representatives have also been studied (e.g., Branchiopods, Fautrez-Firlefyn, 1951; Fautrez-Firlefyn and Fautrez, 1954, 1955; Ostracods, Lowndes, 1935). In recent studies, the author (Brown, 1966a, 1966b; Brown and Metz, 1967) has examined spermatozoa of representative species of seven crustacean subclasses (Ostracoda excepted). These studies involved …

Effects Of Hypothermia On Absorption Of P-32 In Mice, Bruce C. Luecke Jan 1969

Effects Of Hypothermia On Absorption Of P-32 In Mice, Bruce C. Luecke

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Twenty male white mice were intraperitoneally injected with 210 microcuries of P-32 each. Ten were returned to a 25 degree C. environment and ten others to a 5 degree C. environment with similar food, light, and water provisions. Half of each temperature group was killed and frozen 24 hours following injection while the remaining ten were killed and frozen three weeks following injection. Relative absorptive functions of six organs were studied showing that hypothermia resulted in lower P-32 uptake and longer retention.

Growth Of The White-Mouse Gastrocnemius Muscle Ii. In Non-Terrestrial Gravity, Charles C. Wunder, John W. C. Bird Jan 1969

Growth Of The White-Mouse Gastrocnemius Muscle Ii. In Non-Terrestrial Gravity, Charles C. Wunder, John W. C. Bird

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Exposure of white mice (Swiss Webster, female; NLW, male and female) to 1.5 to 7.0 G's of chronic centrifugation from the age of 5 weeks for durations of 1 to 8 weeks is known to cause some reduction in body growth. However, the retardation of muscular development was not as drastic. When corrections were made for differences between experimental and control body mass by means of Huxley's Equation for Heterauxic Growth, the muscles of experimental mice were seen to be larger than those of control animals of the same size. The measurements of muscle size, in order of increasing high-G …

Fauna Of Testate Amoebae From The Rhytidome Of Juglans Nigra, Ronald E. Goddard, Paul A. Meglitsch Jan 1969

Fauna Of Testate Amoebae From The Rhytidome Of Juglans Nigra, Ronald E. Goddard, Paul A. Meglitsch

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Samples of bark without visible lichen or moss cover were taken from a Juglans nigra located in a city lot in Des Moines, Iowa, remote from water. Euglypha ciliata, E. cuspidata, Microchlamys patella, Centropyxis aerophilus, and two unidentified species of Difflugia were found, ranging from ground level to heights of 35 feet. An estimate of population density, based on a modification of the most probable number count, showed evidence of zonation on the tree surface, with C. aerophilus restricted to near ground level, M. patella occurring approximately evenly up to 35 feet, and E. cuspidata most abundant at moderate heights. …

Upstream Watershed Activities In Iowa And Our Environment, Wilson T. Moon Jan 1969

Upstream Watershed Activities In Iowa And Our Environment, Wilson T. Moon

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Watershed activities in Iowa have had considerable impact on the welfare and environment of our people. Reductions in floodwater, sediment, and erosion damages to lands have been the principal benefits. Preservation and enhancement of the environment is recognized as a by-product for better living for both rural and urban residents. The Flood Control Act of June 22, 1936, a Congressional appropriation in 1953 of 5 million dollars for Pilot Watershed Projects, and the Watershed Protection and Flood Prevention Act of 1954 (Public Law 566) have been the principal means of initiating watershed projects in Iowa during the past 25 years. …

Anatomic And Physiologic Effects Of The Antithyroid Drug, Propylthiouracil, On Rats, A. James Shold Jan 1969

Anatomic And Physiologic Effects Of The Antithyroid Drug, Propylthiouracil, On Rats, A. James Shold

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Administration of the antithyroid drug, propylthiouracil (PTU), to albino male rats at the dietary level of 0.1 % PTU is accompanied by a decrease in growth rate and a decrease in the oxygen consumption rate. After the initial administration of PTU, prolonged treatment with the drug did not further lower the oxygen consumption rate. The ratios of organ weight to body weight for the testes, stomach, thyroid, eyes, pituitary, and brain were found to be larger in the treated rats than in the untreated controls. The organ weight to body weight ratios of the spleen, liver, kidneys, and heart were …

A Summary Of A Survey Of Science Taught In Hampton Elementary Schools, Kenneth E. Moeller Jan 1969

A Summary Of A Survey Of Science Taught In Hampton Elementary Schools, Kenneth E. Moeller

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

In 1957 the Russians put an artificial satellite into orbit. Since that time science education in the United States has been experiencing a steady change. This change has not only been in course name and content but also in new methods of science teaching. The role of the science teacher is most important in the teaching of the new science materials. The instructor must be able to guide and direct the activities of the students, not just spew forth information. Often in the past, the instructor has taught as he had been taught. Most courses now are developed along these …

A Bilateral Color Anomaly In The Crayfish, Orconectes Immunis (Hagen), Virgil E. Dowell, Leonard P. Winier Jan 1969

A Bilateral Color Anomaly In The Crayfish, Orconectes Immunis (Hagen), Virgil E. Dowell, Leonard P. Winier

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A live female crayfish; Orconectes immunis (Hagen) exhibiting unusual body coloration was given to the biology laboratories at the University of Northern Iowa for study. Its right half, including antennae and other appendages, was colored an azure blue; the left half was colored normally. This bilateral coloration mosaicism persisted following molting. Gynandromorphism as a corollary factor is eliminated on the basis that no apparent external sexual intergradation of sexual dimorphism was noticeable. Somatic mutation in early embryonic development is the most likely explanation. A mutation in a gene affecting some aspect of the biochemical synthesis pathway in pigmentation seems to …

Ethanol Precipitates Of Cephalobus Sp. (Nematoda: Cephalobidae) Inhibiting The Growth Of Staphylococcus Pyogenes Var. Aureus, Rollin H. Heinzerling, Robert C. Goss Jan 1969

Ethanol Precipitates Of Cephalobus Sp. (Nematoda: Cephalobidae) Inhibiting The Growth Of Staphylococcus Pyogenes Var. Aureus, Rollin H. Heinzerling, Robert C. Goss

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Dried ethanol precipitates prepared from nematodes incubated for 7, 8, 15, 21 and 22 days produced significant inhibition of Staphylococcus aureus. The 7 and 15 day precipitates showed a linear increase in inhibition. Microscopic observation indicated that plates incubated for 8, 15, and 20 days had the greatest fraction of molting nematodes. Molting was correlated with inhibition.
