A Study Of Air Cleaners And The Effect Of Air Cleaner Design On Horsepower, Roger D. Mcculley

Graduate Research Papers

It is the purpose of this study to investigate air cleaners and the effect of air cleaner housing design, intake snorkel tube design and filter media on engine horsepower. In doing the investigation, the writer will determine how horsepower is affected by: (1) the size and shape of the intake snorkel, (2) the placement of the intake snorkel in the engine compartment, (3) the size (volume) of the air cleaner housing, (4) the type of filtering media used, (5) the size of the filter element, (6) breather holes drilled in the filter housing, and (7) a partially clogged filter element.

Open Letter To Science Teachers: Before You Lock The Door, Delma E. Harding Jan 1970

Open Letter To Science Teachers: Before You Lock The Door, Delma E. Harding

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Before closing textbooks and locking classroom doors for the summer, check on several things to help make your teaching more coordinated and meaningful when fall comes. Make out a tentative schedule for next year's classes. Decide what units to teach and approximately what length each is to be. Include a list of materials you plan to use for each unit. This means chemicals, slides, demonstrations, experiments, models, audiovisual aids, tape recordings, glassware, and anything else you expect to use. Have everything ordered or available for use, so there are no disappointments or holdups when you start teaching again.

Science And Social Change, Milton O. Pella Jan 1970

Science And Social Change, Milton O. Pella

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The meager period of time we call "ours" in the vast continuum from creation to dissolution has but one constant and that constant is change; our time is one of unprecedented change.

If Cyclamate Is Banned, Should Hundreds Of Other Products Be Removed From Market?

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

If cyclamate is banned on the basis of the few tests performed so far, then hundreds of other products should also be removed from the daily market. This is the opinion of Drs. Stanley L. Inhorn, director of the Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene, and Lorraine F. Meisner, instructor of preventive medicine at the University of Wisconsin.

Transitory Effects Of Dimethyl Sulfoxide On The Electrical Properties Of Isolated Frog Skin, David M. Baumann, Jewett Dunham Jan 1970

Transitory Effects Of Dimethyl Sulfoxide On The Electrical Properties Of Isolated Frog Skin, David M. Baumann, Jewett Dunham

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The experiments indicate that when DMSO-Ringer's solutions are applied to the outside of the frog skin, the electrical potential difference across the skin decreases while the short circuiting current increases slightly. Ringer's solutions containing DMSO applied to the inside of the skin caused both the short circuiting current and the potential difference across the skin to decrease. These observations appear to be directly related to the concentration of DMSO-Ringer's applied. The observed effects are discussed with respect to possible changes in the skin brought about by the DMSO and the relationships of these phenomena to active transport functions of the …

A Preliminary Faunal Study Of The Upper Little Sioux River, Richard V. Bovbjerg, Nancy L. Pearsall, Michael L. Brackin Jan 1970

A Preliminary Faunal Study Of The Upper Little Sioux River, Richard V. Bovbjerg, Nancy L. Pearsall, Michael L. Brackin

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Several stations of the Little Sioux River were sampled from the Minnesota headwaters to the confluence of Milford Creek. The river changes from intermittent, ponded headwaters to continuously flowing stretches with a concomitant shift in the fauna of increasing downstream diversity of species. While the study of only one summer is reported here, it is hoped that further studies on this and other rivers would be encouraged so that biologists will have a biotic baseline to follow future changes and hopefully to be the basis for suggested water quality control of the future.

Some Factors Affecting The Nest-Cleaning Behavior Of Honey Bees (Apis Mellifera), Harold A. Borchers Jan 1970

Some Factors Affecting The Nest-Cleaning Behavior Of Honey Bees (Apis Mellifera), Harold A. Borchers

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Glass-paned observation hives were used to study the behavior of nestcleaning in American Foulbrood-resistant honey bees. Transplanted-dead brood in comb inserts was used to determine the rate of removal of dead brood. Dead brood located within the brood nest was removed faster than dead brood located in other areas. Strong nectar flow appeared to exert a positive influence on the rate of removal of dead brood. Comparisons made between the responses of honey bees toward brood killed by American Foulbrood and brood killed by hydrogen cyanide showed inconsistencies that indicate the possibility of unknown environmental factors.

The Iowa Academy Of Science As A Directing Influence In Science Education, Robert W. Hanson Jan 1970

The Iowa Academy Of Science As A Directing Influence In Science Education, Robert W. Hanson

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The last decade was marked by drastic changes in the studied approach to teaching science and most school subjects. A whole new vocabulary of science education terminology appeared-the process approach, conceptual schemes, Hanson integrated science, audio-tutorial techniques, the multi-media approach, computer-assisted instruction. These and many other phrases can be summed up in the one word innovation, and many educators of the more traditional bent feel a bit uneasy and perhaps defensive about the extent to which innovation is lacking in their teaching.

Splenocytes And Lymphocytes: A Study In The Rat Using The Fluorochrome Acridine Orange, N. F. Metcalf, S. P. Youngberg, W. K. Metcalf Jan 1970

Splenocytes And Lymphocytes: A Study In The Rat Using The Fluorochrome Acridine Orange, N. F. Metcalf, S. P. Youngberg, W. K. Metcalf

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Single cell suspensions of lymphocytes derived from the spleen and thoracic duct of rats were labelled with the fluorochrome acridine orange, proved to be viable by tissue culture, and injected into the left ventricle of isogenic rats. No evidence for recirculation of lymphocytes from blood to thoracic duct lymph within a three hour cycle was obtained. The injected cells whether derived from the spleen or thoracic duct homed only to the tissues of the lymphomyeloid complex.

Book Selection Policies In Small Iowa High Schools, Phyllis R. Cook Jan 1970

Book Selection Policies In Small Iowa High Schools, Phyllis R. Cook

Graduate Research Papers

The central problem of this study was to attempt to determine what factors influence book selection in small Iowa high schools. The procedure followed used a systematic sampling technique and a questionnaire was mailed to librarians in schools of not more than three hundred students enrolled in the high school. Schools were selected from the Iowa Educational Directory, l 1969-1970, listing of school districts, officials, and student populations. It was hoped that at the conclusion of this study, the findings would show the sources school librarians found most valuable in filling orders: and to try and establish a pattern adopted …

Digestion Rate Of The Clear Lake Black Bullhead, Richard J. Baur Jan 1970

Digestion Rate Of The Clear Lake Black Bullhead, Richard J. Baur

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

During the summers of 1967 and 1968, digestion rate and daily food consumption of yearling black bullheads (Ictalurus melas) fed chironomid larvae in the laboratory were compared with similar data for bullheads feeding in Clear Lake. Fish were starved for 3 days and force-fed 0.20 g or 0.30 g of chironomid larvae (Chironomus riparius). Stomachs were mostly empty of food 12 hours after force-feeding. Analysis of covariance showed that the amount of food digested depended on the weight of food fed and time allowed for digestion. Tripling the size of the force-fed meal increased digestion rate 2.4 times. The …

Metabolic Evaluation Of Preserved And Reinserted Canine Kidneys, John L. Depasquale, Alfred M. Hunt Jr., Edwin A. Mirand, Gerald P. Murphy Jan 1970

Metabolic Evaluation Of Preserved And Reinserted Canine Kidneys, John L. Depasquale, Alfred M. Hunt Jr., Edwin A. Mirand, Gerald P. Murphy

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Twenty-four hour preservation of kidneys has been achieved without perfusion, and in some instances without oxygen in a hypothermic hyperbaric environment (Groenewald et al., 1969). These experiments were designed to evaluate the survival of the preserved kidneys and the success of the preservation techniques.

Children's Judgments Of Age, William R. Looft, James E. Patton, Don C. Charles, Barbara Gundelach, Kathryn Magnuson Jan 1970

Children's Judgments Of Age, William R. Looft, James E. Patton, Don C. Charles, Barbara Gundelach, Kathryn Magnuson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Age judgments of human figures by children, ranging in age from 3 through 9 years, were investigated. The stimuli consisted of 4 different male figures drawn according to typical physical characteristics of the middle-aged adult, adolescent child, and infant. The figures were reproduced in 2 sizes and were matched in all possible pairings. Ss' accuracy in age judgments increased steadily over the 7 age levels. The errors of young Ss were primarily due to a figural-size response set. Older Ss made increasing use of other physical features in making their judgments. Implications of these findings were discussed with references …

High School Biology Training And Introductory College Biology Success, Stanley Whelchel, David Pettus Jan 1970

High School Biology Training And Introductory College Biology Success, Stanley Whelchel, David Pettus

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

High School biology teachers are occasionally concerned with curriculum problems such as: 1. Should BSCS biology be introduced in the curriculum, and if it is, will the students do well in the introductory biology courses in college? 2. Should two biology courses be offered at the high school level, and will the second course really prepare a student better for college biology?

Rallying Cry For Truly Logical Animal Lover, Michael O'Donnell Jan 1970

Rallying Cry For Truly Logical Animal Lover, Michael O'Donnell

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

On attending a recent animal-protection rally, I noticed that a great deal was said about outrages against the nobler and cuddlier animals but nothing at all about the daily slaughter of many millions of microorganisms. I have therefore composed an anthem which I hope will prove a rallying cry for the truly logical animal lover.

Some Blood Parasite And Disease Antibody Findings In Wild Rio Grande Turkeys Stocked In Iowa, David J. Roslien, Arnold O. Haugen Jan 1970

Some Blood Parasite And Disease Antibody Findings In Wild Rio Grande Turkeys Stocked In Iowa, David J. Roslien, Arnold O. Haugen

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Thirty-nine wild Rio Grande turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo intermedia), live-trapped near Sonora, Texas, were tested for various blood parasites and disease antibodies before being released in the Yellow River State Forest in Allamakee County, Iowa, in the fall and winter of 1960-61. Haemoproteus meleagridis was found in 79% of the 39 turkeys· Salmonella pullorum in 15%; and chicken embryo lethal orphan virus (CELO) antibodies in 1 of 9 birds tested for evidence of that disease. Ornithosis was found in one pooled sample of serum that involved 4 birds but it was absent in 15 birds. No evidence was detected for Salmonella …

Some Aspects Of Conservation Practices And Agricultural Related Pollutants, Dewey T. Bondurant Jan 1970

Some Aspects Of Conservation Practices And Agricultural Related Pollutants, Dewey T. Bondurant

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Sediment is the principal pollutant resulting from soil erosion on agricultural lands. Soil erosion also contributes to the delivery of other agricultural related pollutants to surface waters. Application of practices which control erosion on agricultural lands can be effective in reducing sediment and related pollutants in surface waters. Intensive application of terraces and other practices at critical locations will have the greatest effect on sediment reduction.

Is Cold Acclimatization Necessary For Mammalian Hibernation, G. Edgar Folk Jr., Mary A. Folk, Ferdinand Kreuzer Jan 1970

Is Cold Acclimatization Necessary For Mammalian Hibernation, G. Edgar Folk Jr., Mary A. Folk, Ferdinand Kreuzer

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

(1) In this study hibernator rodents were exposed to a warm environment and then a cold environment to determine whether cold acclimatization is necessary to permit a hibernator to go into dormancy. Four species were tested in September: hedgehogs, woodchucks, Glis dormice, and Eliomys dormice. With three species, (hedgehog, woodchuck, Eliomys dormice) if the rodents went into hibernation at all, they were capable of doing this within 24 to 48 hours after being removed from a warm environment. (2) Those individuals which hibernated directly after being placed in a cold environment, had not shown thermal ability in the warm environment. …

The Reproductive Strategy Of The American Goldfinch, Spinus Tristis Tristis, In Iowa, Carol B. Lynch Jan 1970

The Reproductive Strategy Of The American Goldfinch, Spinus Tristis Tristis, In Iowa, Carol B. Lynch

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The American Goldfinch, Spinus tristis tristis, begins breeding later than any other bird in the north temperate zone. The breeding season in Iowa extends approximately from early July to late September. Data from observations on 30 nestings (124 eggs) indicate that if the breeding season is divided in half, the percent of eggs hatching is seen to decrease from 87% to 57%, and the percent of young fledging from 95% to 62% in the latter half. There is considerable evidence that breeding is cued by the blooming of thistle (Circium spp.), a plant upon which goldfinches depend for nest-lining …
