Crop Residue And Its Use To Control Soil And Water Loss, John K. Maddy Jan 1969

Crop Residue And Its Use To Control Soil And Water Loss, John K. Maddy

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Although Iowa farmers have made good progress in applying soil conservation practices, much soil and water is still lost from farm land. Increased acres of row crops with a corresponding decrease in meadow and pasture land has caused concern due to increased erosion by wind and water. The leaving of crop residues on the surface of the soil instead of covering them by plowing can provide good soil protection. Mulch tillage techniques on continuous row cropped land can equal crop rotations with meadow in controlling soil loss. Crop residues left on the soil surface over winter also helps to provide …

Exploratory Studies Of Collemholan Populations In Lowa, William L. O'Neill, Larry P. Pedigo Jan 1969

Exploratory Studies Of Collemholan Populations In Lowa, William L. O'Neill, Larry P. Pedigo

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Collembola, primitive insects of the subclass Apterygota, were studied in Iowa during the summer of 1968 as part of the National Science Foundation Undergraduate Research Participation Program at Iowa State University. Soil cores were taken from woodlands, grasslands, cultivated fields, pastures, fencerows, marshlands, and caves, and animals were extracted with a modified Tullgren apparatus. Sixty-five collembolan species were collected, three of which were believed to be new. The results of systematic sampling at Ledges State Park, Boone County, Iowa, indicated that strong qualitative and quantitative differences existed among several woodland sites and a prairie-like site.

An Evaluation Of The Futures Market In Live Beef Cattle As A Means Of Shifting The Risk Inherent In Cattle Feeding, Philip Paul Hufferd Jan 1969

An Evaluation Of The Futures Market In Live Beef Cattle As A Means Of Shifting The Risk Inherent In Cattle Feeding, Philip Paul Hufferd

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

There has been extensive research and study in the area of hedging price risk of agricultural products on commodity futures markets. This work, however, has been limited almost entirely to the hedging of grain. The first attempt to conduct futures trading in a live commodity began on November 30, 1964, with the advent of futures trading in live beef cattle. In the absence of research and experience with trading of this kind there has been a tendency to transfer conventional futures market logic, with respect to hedging, almost unaltered to the futures market for live cattle. Some researchers have felt, …

Generation Ebb: A Novella, Charlene M. Eblen Jan 1969

Generation Ebb: A Novella, Charlene M. Eblen

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Two things essential for the development of experimental science are the cooperation of many workers and the keeping of careful records of their work. A major problem for the experimental scientists of the seventeenth century was the lack of both cooperative effort and systematic records. The scientific work early in this century was scattered, intermittent, and recorded, if at all, haphazardly. The purpose of this paper is to show how Henry Oldenburg, during his first five years as secretary to the Royal Society of London for Improving Natural Knowledge, developed patterns of communication which brought the experimental philosophers together to …

Rationale For Sequence Of High School Science Courses: Argument For Change, James M. Moulton Jan 1968

Rationale For Sequence Of High School Science Courses: Argument For Change, James M. Moulton

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

In this time of rapidly evolving curricula, it is, I fear, redundant and presumptuous for a professor of biology to comment upon secondary school education. This is particularly so if he lacks experience in the problems of secondary school administration and teaching as does the present author. The problems of adequate preparation and appealing to student interests that one encounters at the college and university levels among relatively highly selected students are magnified many, many times at the high school level.

A Naturalist At Large: Skin-In, Skin-Out, Marston Bates

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Each semester I arrange a seminar of a dozen or so students who meet one evening a week in the living room of the house. I try to select students with different interests, from different departments of the university, with the idea of getting to know a small but varied sample of the student body. We decide on some topic for discussion during the semester, but whatever the official topic, two subjects - education and sex - always come up, and always generate heated arguments.

Raising Japanese Quail In The Laboratory, Kashmiri L. Arora

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Within a few years, the use of Coturniz coturnix japonica, popularly known as Japanese quail, as a laboratory research animal has increased tremendously in the United States and also abroad. Currently, a variety of laboratories conducting investigations on different aspects of biological and related areas are using this bird as an experimental animal. We have learned from its use in both individual and class experiments that it is also a very useful animal for classroom experimentation.

Acceptance Of Tobacco Mosaic Virus By Established Tomato Root Cultures, Valerie Halverson Jan 1968

Acceptance Of Tobacco Mosaic Virus By Established Tomato Root Cultures, Valerie Halverson

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

With Haberlandt's idea of cultivating individual cells in vitro, cell tissue culture began in 1902. Sporadic work was done in this area through the ensuing years. However, it was not until White's cultivation of tomato roots for an indefinite time span in 1934 that culture study became significant. Most work has been oriented toward the study of the growth and function of the cell. The research has included various nutritional and environmental studies. The proposition of this research is to use established technique for culturing tomato roots in order to go a step further, and use these cultures to study …

Iieal Glucose Absorption After Jejunectomy In The Rat, William M. Kelly, Gordon W. Searle Jan 1968

Iieal Glucose Absorption After Jejunectomy In The Rat, William M. Kelly, Gordon W. Searle

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Eleven male rats were subjected to jejunectomy under ether anesthesia with end-to-end intestinal anastomosis. After recovery they were allowed to eat ad libitum and growth was little impaired. An in vivo test of absorptive capacity for glucose was applied to the surviving ileum of the jejunectomized animals and to the corresponding segment of ileum in eleven untreated rats. The correlation coefficient for the body weight and the amount of glucose absorbed from a Krebs-Ringer-bicarbonate solution containing 16 to 17 μmol/ml (300 mg. percent) glucose in all animals was 0.45. Accordingly, absorption of glucose and of fluid volume was expressed as …

The Overhead Projector As An Aid To Laboratory Instruction, Larry L. Schenken

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

In many cases the science teacher overlooks the possibility of using the overhead projector during laboratory sessions. Projectors often are covered with dust jackets and shoved into a comer like some unwanted piece of old furniture as soon as a lab activity is started. With a bit of planning these machines may become an integral part of almost any laboratory experience.

Movements And Daily Activities Of Fox As Determined By Visual Observations And Radio Tracking, Roger A. Allan Jan 1968

Movements And Daily Activities Of Fox As Determined By Visual Observations And Radio Tracking, Roger A. Allan

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Movements and daily activities of the red fox (Vulpes fulva) were studied by visual observation and radio tracking in Buena Vista County, Iowa. Five fox were trapped with steel jump traps. Before release, three of the trapped fox were immobilized with a commercial tranquilizer to enable attachment of an ear tag and a collar-type transmitter on each fox. Range of the radio equipment when field tested showed an effective range of just under one fourth mile. The diameter of the loop antenna on the receiver was critical, and probably indirectly contributed to the death of one fox. Two juvenile fox, …

Effects Of Megestrol Acetate, A Progestin, On Female Rats, Lenore Southam Jan 1968

Effects Of Megestrol Acetate, A Progestin, On Female Rats, Lenore Southam

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Silastic (dimethylpolysiloxane) capsules containing megestrol acetate (6- methyl-17-∝-acetoxypregna-4, 6- diene-3, 20-dione) were implanted subcutaneously in mature female rats. The effects of megestrol on the ovary, on fertility, on body weight, on adrenal weight, and on physical activity were observed. Megestrol acetate did not inhibit ovulation or fertility, and did not reduce ovarian weight; thus it did not have an anti-gonadotrophic effect at the dosages used. It affected vaginal cytology in a typical progestational fashion producing a constant diestrus or mixed cell smear. Body weight increased during treatment and remained fairly constant after treatment stopped. Adrenal weight decreased during treatment and …

Visual Information Coding By Nerve Impulse Patterns, D R. T. Walker, N. R. Carlson, S. S. Fox Jan 1968

Visual Information Coding By Nerve Impulse Patterns, D R. T. Walker, N. R. Carlson, S. S. Fox

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Microelectrode recordings of single cells were obtained from the visual cortices of twenty acutely prepared curarized cats. A 500 msec light stimulus was presented for 150 trials at inter-flash intervals of 1.3, 2.0, 2.5, 3.2 and 4.0 seconds. The post stimulus time histograms of cells responding with an accelerated firing to stimulus onset encoded the inter-stimulus interval by an increased firing during the second of three 166 msec periods during the stimulus. The firing at light offset and after did not encode inter-stimulus intervals.

Application Of Cost And Value Comparisons To Iowa Wildlife, Harlan D. Cook Jan 1968

Application Of Cost And Value Comparisons To Iowa Wildlife, Harlan D. Cook

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

There is an increasing demand for methods to determine wildlife values and costs in order to allow comparisons with marketed goods which compete with wildlife for funds and resources. For relatively small changes in the total wildlife supply, estimation of the value of this increment in supply should be compared with the associated costs for the increment in supply. Statewide average values and costs are usually meaningless in this type of comparison. It is advocated that better estimates of changes in wildlife abundance caused by government and private activities will provide much useful information even with the limited economic information …

Distribution And Habitat Of The Red Squirrel, Tamiasciurus Hudsonicus, In The North Central States, G. Robert Lynch, G. Edgar Folk Jr. Jan 1968

Distribution And Habitat Of The Red Squirrel, Tamiasciurus Hudsonicus, In The North Central States, G. Robert Lynch, G. Edgar Folk Jr.

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A survey of the distribution and habitat of the red squirrel (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus) was conducted in northern Iowa, southern Minnesota, and Wisconsin. The results indicate that the present range of the red squirrel in Iowa covers the north central counties of the state, and is considerably smaller than that given in earlier surveys. The Iowa red squirrel lives in immature hardwood forests near rivers and lakes. If mature trees arc present, they are used for nesting and caching food. The preferred foods of the Iowa red squirrel are the black walnut (Juglans nigra) and the butternut (Juglans cinerea). In Wisconsin …
