How We Raise Paramecium, Easily, In Large Numbers, Eugene C. Bovee, Sandra C. Thompson, Mercedes L. Acuña

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

We use more Paramecium spp. in our Physiological Protozoology course at the University of Kansas than any other cells, and use them in great numbers each week, so that we wish to avoid the cost of buying them commercially. Therefore, we raise our own cultures. For over twenty years the senior author has used the easy method described here to raise large numbers of Paramecium aurelia, P. cauclatum, or P. multimicronucleatum, with consistent success.

Comparison Of Forward, Backward, And Conventional Training In The Learning Of A List Of Cvc Trigrams, Robert A. Embree, Murray Senn, Glenna Doering

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Ss were instructed to learn a list of 10 CVC trigrams by either the conventional serial anticipation method, backward conditioning or forward conditioning. The F ratio failed to show a significant difference between the three experimental groups. The results contradict previous results which shown that forward training is more efficient than the other two methods.

Vertebrate Comparative Anatomy In Undergraduate Curricula 1969-70, Karl E. Goellner Jan 1971

Vertebrate Comparative Anatomy In Undergraduate Curricula 1969-70, Karl E. Goellner

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

In 1966 I presented a short paper describing some impressions of the status of vertebrate comparative anatomy (and embryology) in European universities (Goellner, 1968). Discussions which followed seemed to suggest that the status of these courses in the United States may be changing, and that a survey might elicit information on this matter. A basic assumption was implied, namely, that comparative anatomy had, indeed, been a traditional course in college offerings, particularly for zoology majors and for pre-medical and pre-dental students. This paper presents results of a modest survey conducted during the winter of 1969-70.

A Library Course Of Study - Investigation Outline, Mary Hantelman

Graduate Research Papers

I examined several course of study guides, textbooks, periodicals, and books on library curriculum as part of an investigation to determine what library skills were taught at each level. For each area I included the type or information found and then added my own conclusions for that section.

Following this, in outline form, is the library instructional program, 1 - 9, for the Oelwein Community Schools. The high school program is given in greater detail because I felt the outline form would not explain to the reader the rationale behind it. A.s a part. of the library program on the …

Environmental Education In The Environment, Michael J. Naylon Jan 1971

Environmental Education In The Environment, Michael J. Naylon

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Man, the thinking animal, is an observer of events in the universe. He has conceded the obvious truth of his uniqueness on this planet and his religions charge him with its stewardship. However, the very quality which distinguishes him from other life forms has also proven to be his greatest weakness. Perception is a personal experience; its very nature mandates that it be point-centered in the universe. That point is the individual. Collective man is guilty of assuming that the universe "happens" around him. He has not effectively perceived that he is a happening in the universe. He has compounded …

The Acs-Nsta Cooperative High School Chemistry Examinations, Albert J. Judge, Charles W. Hendrickson

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Teachers of chemistry have available an evaluative tool used extensively throughout the nation to measure the end-of-year achievement of high school chemistry students. This instrument is the ACS-NSTA Cooperative High School Chemistry Examination. The National High School Testing Program under the direction of Professor Theodore A. Ashford has made available to high school teachers a series of widely used ACS-NSTA Cooperative Chemistry Examinations. It is estimated that over a million and a half high school students have been tested since the first ACS-NSTA High School Chemistry Examination appeared in the late 1950s.

To advance the science of anatomy-the structural basis of function. 3. To train graduate students for a future role as anatomy faculty.

Chronology Of Reproduction Of The Fox Squirrel In Iowa, Richard J. Mccloskey, Paul A. Vohs Jr. Jan 1971

Chronology Of Reproduction Of The Fox Squirrel In Iowa, Richard J. Mccloskey, Paul A. Vohs Jr.

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This study was undertaken to increase the information available concerning the chronology of production in the fox squirrel (Sciurus niger rufiventer Geoffroy) and the contribution of spring and fall litters to the fall population. Previous reports indicated that two major periods of reproductive activity occurred annually. Our information indicates that only one major period of reproductive activity per year occurred in Iowa during 1966 and 1967. The onset of reproduction occurred in October when females in a state of oestrus were first handled. Parturition began in late December and early January. Young were born in all months from January …

The Realistic Approach To Tradition And Change In The Novels Of Rabindranath Tagore, Robert C. Granner Jan 1971

The Realistic Approach To Tradition And Change In The Novels Of Rabindranath Tagore, Robert C. Granner

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Rabindranath Tagore was born in 1861 and died in 1941. Both his life and thought span the epoch of renascent India, and his novels realistically reflect the problems and struggles of the Indian people during the past century. In this thesis Tagore 's development, not so much as a great novelist but as a social commentator and reformer, is discussed. His role as a liberal mediator between the violent reactionary and the vehement traditionalist is a predominant factor in all of his prose writings, and it is from this point of view that each of his novels is examined.

Two Program Processors For The Preparation Of Instructional Materials In Chemistry, Lloyd V. Gayman Jan 1971

Two Program Processors For The Preparation Of Instructional Materials In Chemistry, Lloyd V. Gayman

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The use of inductive or inquiry techniques in the teaching of science has been emphasized. A possible technological aid to the inquiry process is the electronic computer. A review of the literature in this area led to the development of two program processors, one to produce simulated experiments, the other to generate problems for student use.

The first processor, SIM/G, can be used to produce tables or charts. Five sample programs were prepared to illustrate the use of the SIM/G processor. Directions for use of the processor have been given. Documentation has included both a complete verbal explanation and a …

The Philosophy Of Love In Selected Dramas By Paddy Chayefsky, Bettie Lou Hoos Jan 1971

The Philosophy Of Love In Selected Dramas By Paddy Chayefsky, Bettie Lou Hoos

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

A study of the dramas developing the theme of love by contemporary dramatist, Paddy Chayefsky, discloses his philosophy of love to be the essence of meaningful life. His nine plays depicting this concept may be divided into three categories according to the type of love they portray: philotheistic, romantic, and conjugal love. The Tenth Man, Gideon, and The Passion of Josef D., representing philotheistic love, reject man's ability to love God. The highest love he ls capable of is that for his fellowman. In his romances, Middle of the Night, Marty, and the secondary plot of Holiday Song, a a …

Recital Notes On Works By Bach, Haydn, Martin, And Ibert, Janice Dockendorff Boland Jan 1971

Recital Notes On Works By Bach, Haydn, Martin, And Ibert, Janice Dockendorff Boland

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The 18th century was a golden age for flute music. The greater as well as the lesser composers wrote abundantly for the instrument. Perhaps the greatest composer of this century was Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750), who made important contributions to the flute literature of that era. Bach's works can be divided chronologically into three stages: the early or "organ music" stage, the middle or "instrumental music" stage, and the final "church music" stage. We shall be concerned with his instrumental music stage and, more specifically, the chamber music which it incorporated.
