Immobilization Of Adult Bull Bison With Etorphine, Arnold O. Haugen, Melvin J. Swenson, Milo J. Shult, Stephen J. Petersburg Jan 1976

Immobilization Of Adult Bull Bison With Etorphine, Arnold O. Haugen, Melvin J. Swenson, Milo J. Shult, Stephen J. Petersburg

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Between 1967 and 1972, 66 bison (Bison bison) (Linnaeus) bulls, 1 cow and 1 calf were dosed with the narcotic etorphine (M-99) on open range at Fort Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge, Valentine, Nebraska and at Wind Cave National Park, Hot Springs, South Dakota. Etorphine administered at levels of 5 to 6.3 mcg/lb of body weight brought the animals to sternal recumbency. Underdosing was associated with long, difficult pursuit and considerable chance of not apprehending the drugged animal. Adding of methotrimeprazine (Levoprome) up to 74.88 mcg/lb of body weight to the etorphine dosages for some old bulls seemed to have no …

The Contribution Of A Media Specialist To The Teaching And Learning Program In An Elementary School, Erma Johnson Jan 1976

The Contribution Of A Media Specialist To The Teaching And Learning Program In An Elementary School, Erma Johnson

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this study is to identify factors which can be used to persuade the Oskaloosa Community School District to hire a media specialist to serve Grant Elementary School. The question is: Does a professional media specialist make a significant contribution to the teaching and learning program in an elementary school?

The hypothesis to be tested is: Previous research results and opinions of knowledgeable experts and practitioners in the field will show that students in schools which have centralized collections staffed by a trained media specialist make greater educational gains than students in schools without access to a centralized …

Science Foundations: A Science Program For The Non-Science Major, James A. Shymansky Jan 1976

Science Foundations: A Science Program For The Non-Science Major, James A. Shymansky

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The Science Foundations program at the University of Iowa consists of a sequence of general science courses designed specifically for the non-science student. The program is unique both in course content and instructional strategy. Recognizing that student backgrounds and needs differ greatly between the science and non-science major, the Foundations program is offered as an alternative to the traditional lecture-based science courses. Whereas the lecture-based courses emphasize the recall and application of factual material, Science Foundations stresses problem- solving strategies based on laboratory experience. Consequently, practically all of a student's time is devoted to "hands-on" activity with problems in the …

Observations Of Invertebrate Drift In The Skunk River, Iowa, David W. Zimmer Jan 1976

Observations Of Invertebrate Drift In The Skunk River, Iowa, David W. Zimmer

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Invertebrate drift was collected weekly from four sites on the Skunk River in the summer of 1971. Drift was composed primarily of lotic insects. The composition and abundance of drift was related to predominant substrate types and water quality. There was a significant (P =.05) negative correlation between drift density and discharge at sites with sand bottom sediments, but drift density was not related to discharge at sampling areas with gravel and rubble substrates.

A Survey Of Factors That Influence Third Grade Children’S Leisure Reading Habits, Irene Anna Nissen Jan 1976

A Survey Of Factors That Influence Third Grade Children’S Leisure Reading Habits, Irene Anna Nissen

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors that influence elementary children's leisure reading habits.

The two hypotheses tested are:

1. Children with above average intelligence do more leisure reading.

2. Children will read more if more school time is given for leisure or voluntary reading.

An Examination Of Myth And Archetype In The Earthsea Trilogy By Ursula Kroeber Le Guin, Susan Oster Robinson

Graduate Research Papers

This study was an attempt to apply the principles and methods of one type of criticism, archetypal, to certain science fiction/fantasy writings. The study used these methods to answer the question: How do archetypes function in the Earthsea Trilogy by Ursula Kroeber Le Guin? The trilogy comprised A Wizard of Earthsea, The Tombs of Atuan, and The Farthest Shore.

Techniques For Elk Immobilization With Succinylcholine Chloride, Kenneth L. Varland Jan 1976

Techniques For Elk Immobilization With Succinylcholine Chloride, Kenneth L. Varland

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Marking individual elk was necessary to enable a study of their movements at Wind Cave National Park. Elk were immobilized with succinylcholine chloride (20 mg/cc) by using syringe darts. Twenty adult bulls were immobilized in a modified bison corral trap baited with salt; four adult cows and a six-month-old female calf were immobilized from a helicopter; and a single free-ranging adult cow was immobilized from the ground. The mean drug dosage used for successful immobilization was 27.0 mg for adult bulls and 24.4 mg for adult cows. Dosages necessary to immobilize bulls and cows differed significantly (P < 0.05). Bulls became immobilized an average of 8.8 minutes after injection and cows after 11.8 minutes; these times were not significantly different (P > 0.05). There was …

Aerosols And The Atmosphere, Darrel Hoff Jan 1976

Aerosols And The Atmosphere, Darrel Hoff

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

In recent months concern has been expressed about the effect of certain aerosol sprays on the protective ozone layer of the atmosphere. This is a current environmental issue and it seems an appropriate topic for discussion in the high school science classroom. Like many environmental issues, the aerosol issue is not as clearly defined as is sometimes presented in the general media, and it should therefore be approached with an open mind by both teachers and students.

Man And His Technology, Clifford G. Mccollum Jan 1976

Man And His Technology, Clifford G. Mccollum

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

(Presented as a part of the Symposium on Man at the Centennial Program of the Iowa Academy of Science, Ames, Iowa April 18, 1975.)

Alexis Carrel, a Nobel laureate of 1912, published a book in 1935 that he titled Man the Unknown. This might have been an appropriate theme for this paper. As Carrel pointed out 40 years ago, although there is much that is known about man, there is need of a much more profound knowledge of ourselves. And not only a knowledge of man as an isolated fragment in the cosmos, but, perhaps even more importantly, …

The 'Visual World' Program At The University Of Northern Iowa, U.S.A., Roy R. Behrens, Kenneth Lash Jan 1976

The 'Visual World' Program At The University Of Northern Iowa, U.S.A., Roy R. Behrens, Kenneth Lash

Faculty Work

Since the 1950's several psychologists have studied the subject of human selective attention [1, 2]. It has been called the 'cocktail party problem' because a good example of the exercise of selective attention occurs when a large convivial group of people come together and it is still possible for an individual to isolate from the high noise level of conversation what a particular speaker says. Thus, the psychological question is: How do humans select what they consider significant information from the vast amount of information provided to the senses by the external environment? It is known that the amount of …

The Effigy Mound Manifestation In Iowa, R. Clark Mallam Jan 1976

The Effigy Mound Manifestation In Iowa, R. Clark Mallam

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The Effigy Mound manifestation ranks as one of the most poorly documented and understood prehistoric cultural phenomena in Iowa. As employed in this paper, the term Effigy Mound refers to the animal-shaped earthen mounds and the cultural activities of the prehistoric societies who constructed them. Although three major archaeological surveys have been conducted in northeastern Iowa, none has specifically emphasized the Effigy Mound manifestation. Consequently, there is a definite lack of mound data necessary for the construction of distribution patterns and cultural models relating to this manifestation. The Luther College Effigy Mound Survey of 1973 was undertaken for the purpose …

The Nature Of Man As Identified From The Study Of The History Of Heart And Circulation, Leland P. Johnson Jan 1976

The Nature Of Man As Identified From The Study Of The History Of Heart And Circulation, Leland P. Johnson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Generic man has evidenced curiosity concerning self and the external world since the beginning of recorded history. How is the external world related to man and how does it affect man's nature? Possible answers to these understandings involve both objective and subjective experiences. The objective world can be perceived by others and verified. Similar interpretations are often functions of common environments and educational dogma. Subjective experience is a private matter which may deny communication, or if communicated, may deny common interpretation. It is hoped that primarily through focusing upon objective experiences as recorded in the history of the development of …

Zonation, Competitive Displacement And Standing Crop Of Northwest Iowa Fen Communities, A. G. Van Der Valk Jan 1976

Zonation, Competitive Displacement And Standing Crop Of Northwest Iowa Fen Communities, A. G. Van Der Valk

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Well developed Iowa fens contain three distinct vegetation zones (border zone, sedge mat zone and discharge zone). On the average, the above ground standing crop of these zones is 425, 197 and 528 g/m2 respectively. Species growing on these fens show three basic distributional patterns: (1) they grow in the border and discharge zones; (2) they grow primarily in the sedge mat zone or (3) they grow in all three zones. Individual plants of species growing in the border and/or discharge zone are on the average 1.6 to 2.7 times taller and weigh 1.8 to 5.4 times more than …

Archaeological Research In The Glenwood Locality: Changing Perspectives, Larry J. Zimmerman Jan 1976

Archaeological Research In The Glenwood Locality: Changing Perspectives, Larry J. Zimmerman

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The three period scheme used by Anderson (1975) to analyze the development of Iowa archaeology is used in this paper to examine Central Plains tradition research in the Glenwood locality, Mills County, Iowa. Pioneer Investigations were primarily descriptive and indicated that the locality had been the locus of considerable aboriginal activity. The focal point of research in the Keyes-Orr Period was taxonomic and conclusively linked the Glenwood materials to cultures in Nebraska. Contemporary Period research focused on detailed analyses of artifacts and internal temporal relationships of locality sites. A greatly expanded data base provided foundations for reconstructions of lifeways and …

Historical notes are included on the principal collectors, along with a summary of the accumulation of floristic records. Taxonomic notes are presented on seven taxa new to the state and on six excluded taxa. A flora of 57 species and 3 hybrids is recognized. Floristic notes are presented on the status of the state flora and county floras. The addition of 402 new county records increases the total of county occurrences by 47%. Statements of habitat and distribution are presented with dot maps for the …

The Case Of The Mysterious Lizard, Patrick D. Murphy Jan 1976

The Case Of The Mysterious Lizard, Patrick D. Murphy

Graduate Research Papers

The Council Bluffs Community Schools does not have media specialists in most of its elementary buildings. This means that there is not a qualified professional available to teach library skills to a majority of the students. The prospects of an improvement in this situation in the near future are not good because of budgetary pressures, Because of this, responsibility for instruction in library skills must be assumed by district level personnel. As there are only two professionals on the district level, some means of reaching many students in a limited amount of time must be used, A television production meets …

Counseling From The Use Of Existential Principles, Otelia Kay Kraft Stensrud Jan 1976

Counseling From The Use Of Existential Principles, Otelia Kay Kraft Stensrud

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Existentialism offers principles which establish a basis for formulating an understanding of man. This philosophy presents perceptions of man which, if considered by counselors, could expand and enrich the counselors' understanding of human existence. The intent of this study was to show that as a result of insight into existential principles and the implementation of these principles in counseling practice, counselors could be better able to facilitate client growth.

The first chapter of this study discussed principles of existential philosophy which established a basis for understanding human existence. Significant principles included the importance of each individual and his experienced world, …

History Of The University Of Northern Iowa Museum, 1890-1975, Pauline L. Sauer

Library Documents & Reports (entire collection)

The museum at the University of Northern Iowa has been an important adjunct of the institution since the last decade of the nineteenth century. The first 65 or so years of its existence are reviewed by the late Mr. Fred Cram, then archivist at the Iowa State Teachers College, in a 15-page paper, “The Museum at the Iowa State Normal School,” prepared in 1955 at the request of Dr. Emmett J. Cable, curator of the museum. The information on this era, summarized below, is gleaned from this paper unless otherwise noted.

Science, Schooling, And Society: Toward An Integrated Curriculum, Peter B. Dow Jan 1975

Science, Schooling, And Society: Toward An Integrated Curriculum, Peter B. Dow

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Those of us who have participated in the curriculum movement over the past decade have seen a profound change in the orientation of curriculum makers during this period. In the wave of science-based curriculum projects that followed the launching of Sputnik in 1957 there was little explicit attention given to the social purposes of instruction. The emphasis in those years was on the transmission of knowledge in the most economical form through the identification of central ideas, and on the invention of pedagogical techniques that supported and reinforced the child's natural curiosity and desire to learn. One of the most …

Do We Misuse Animals In School Science Projects?, John A. Hoyt Jan 1975

Do We Misuse Animals In School Science Projects?, John A. Hoyt

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

A 17-year-old Iowa girl won a trip to the 1974 International Science and Engineering Fair by grafting skin onto 12 mice in the basement of her home after only talking with a veterinarian. One mouse died, one sloughed off the graft, and the others were killed by the student with an overdose of ether. A 15-year-old Kentucky boy won a trip to the same fair by trapping three squirrels in a park, confining them to cages in his basement, and giving them electric shocks over a period of several months to learn if they would respond to visual tests. This …

Becoming Acquainted With India Through Children’S Books (An Annotated Bibliography), Wilma M. Tyler

Graduate Research Papers

This bibliography is an attempt to list some of the best books written for boys and girls on the subject of India.. Basic recommended book lists, bibliographies, and the collection at the Youth Library, University of Northern Iowa, have been consulted to compile it. This is by no means a complete list and it will need periodic revision. So that a major portion of it will remain relevant, the emphasis has been on imaginative literature. The folk tales of India are strongly stressed because they are so closely associated with this country's religions, customs and manners.
