The Embryonic Teacher: A Beginning Science Teacher In A Self-Paced Classroom, Kenneth W. Thompson

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Most beginning science teachers enter schools in the fall with fervor and dedication. Those entering a self-paced classroom typically will find it to be a center of bustling activity with students working on a number of diverse activities. The first year of science teaching is a time of confrontation, of shock, and of conflict. The beginning science teacher must act. Out of this need to act comes a great amount of activity, some effective and some ineffective. The beginning science teacher in a self-paced classroom encounters problems because he is a first year science teacher and because there are problems …

The Potential Of Wild Plants As Food Resources, J. R. K. Robson

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The modern world is so full of scientific wonders that we often forget to look back in history and recognize landmarks that were just as significant as the discovery of the transistor, penicillin, or the laser beam. The history of our present day food is a prime example of a phenomenon that is considered to be too mundane to be taken seriously. Yet, thousands of years ago man made a scientific discovery concerning food that made possible the growth of settlements that became our cities.

Some High School Biology Electives, James H. Meyer, Robert Nelson

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Cedar Falls High School, for many years, offered a science curriculum composed of traditional biology, chemistry, and physics courses. The percentage of students taking science courses began declining in the late 1960's, reaching a low of 573 students (out of approximately 1,500 students) in the 1972-73 school year. Since all science courses offered at the school were elective.it was concluded that some adjustment in course offerings was in order if a greater percentage of the student body was to be reached. As a result of the efforts of the science staff, five new biology courses were developed and subsequently introduced …

Have we, as educators, reached a point in our society where "Truth in Learning" has become as important as "Truth in Lending'? We have seen government agencies mandate controls over banks, as well as auto-mechanics, to become more accountable for their services. Now, it seems that these same controls are to be levied on those in the educational systems of this nation as well.

Investigating Iowa's Weeds, Paul G. Jantzen Jan 1977

Investigating Iowa's Weeds, Paul G. Jantzen

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The term "weed" is often defined as a plant out of place. A. C. Martin has complained that this definition reflects human bias and that pest plants are out of place only with respect to man's immediate purpose. In nature's scheme, they often serve useful functions such as providing food for wildlife throughout the growing season and covering barren soil, thus preventing soil erosion. Judging from their competitive success with many so-called desirable species, they are anything but out of place.

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The embankments of many Austrian highways today show on both sides of the road a new installation: game-warning reflectors which are designed to divert beams from car headlamps into the adjoining countryside. The basic idea for the installation of the reflectors has been derived from the studies of the Institute of Comparative Behavior Research in the Austrian Academy of Sciences, which concentrated on the effect on animals of "eyes" and "eye dummies."

Stereotyped Portrayal Of The Elderly In Picture Books, Deborah J. Jackson Jan 1977

Stereotyped Portrayal Of The Elderly In Picture Books, Deborah J. Jackson

Graduate Research Papers

Studies have found that minorities have been portrayed in a stereotyped image in children's picture books. Since the elderly have been considered a minority group, this study examined the portrayal of the elderly in picture books to determine if a stereotyped image is present. Content analysis was performed on thirty-three books. A worksheet was devised which contained the four main categories main character, function or role, physical appearance, and personality descriptors. Sub-categories for each main category were also provided on the worksheet. Frequency of occurrence for each category or sub-category was then recorded on the worksheet. After the analysis was …

Past and present studies of the Cedar-Iowa River Basin indicate that 82 species of Odonata inhabit the basin. Of the 82 species reported since the tum of the century, 60 species were collected from 1971 -1975; the remaining species were recorded prior to 1920. Two species, Aeshna canadensis Walker and Aeshna interrupta lineata Walker, collected in 1975, represent new records for the state of Iowa. Distribution maps of the 82 species reported within the basin are included.

Accuracy Of Criteria Used To Determine Age Of Fox Squirrels, Richard J. Mccloskey Jan 1977

Accuracy Of Criteria Used To Determine Age Of Fox Squirrels, Richard J. Mccloskey

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This study was undertaken to determine the relative accuracy of fox squirrel (Sciurus niger rufiventer (Geoffroy) age indicators commonly used in the field and laboratory. Previous reports indicated that determination of age of squirrels by external morphological characteristics was inaccurate. Estimation of the ages of 211 squirrels indicated that the most accurate field methods were coloration and appearance of nipples of females and tail pelage and scrotal pigmentation of males. Estimating age by X-ray determination of the presence or absence of an epiphyseal line was the most accurate technique for dead specimens while change in tail …

Seasonal Variation In Weight-Length Relationships Of Largemouth Bass In A 3-Hectare Reservoir, Michael J. Vandenavyle, Kenneth D. Carlander Jan 1977

Seasonal Variation In Weight-Length Relationships Of Largemouth Bass In A 3-Hectare Reservoir, Michael J. Vandenavyle, Kenneth D. Carlander

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Lengths and weights of age 0, I, and II largemouth bass were collected during two growing seasons to evaluate seasonal trends in weight-length relationships. Average K(TL) declined significantly between August 1971 and April 1972, but significant growth in length occurred during the interval. In 1972, K(TL) increased from April to July and remained high into November. Condition was better in 1972 than in 1971 when the population density was greater. Monthly estimates of the coefficient of condition, K(TL), and weight-length regressions were both required to interpret seasonal changes. Weight-length regressions calculated over longer collection periods in which K(TL …

A Pattern Of Eolian Deposition In Northeastern Iowa, Lyle L. Davis Jan 1977

A Pattern Of Eolian Deposition In Northeastern Iowa, Lyle L. Davis

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The geomorphology of the Iowan surface in northeastern Iowa has been very controversial from the earliest efforts to explain it. For about seventy-five years it was considered to be the product of a separate and unique glaciation and later as a substage of late Illinoian or early Wisconsin age. It was universally known as the Iowan Drift Area (Kay and Graham, 1941) until about twelve years ago.

William Dean Howells: Realist With A Purpose, Mary O'Brien Apple Jan 1977

William Dean Howells: Realist With A Purpose, Mary O'Brien Apple

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

William Dean Howells {1837-1920), the designer, defender, and promoter of American Realistic literature, developed his theory of realism from his experiences with literature and life. When Howells was a young man, his view of life was fashioned from his reading of romantic literature. As he matured, he became convinced that literature which idealized life left its readers with illusions about life which distorted their perceptions of life and themselves. He came to believe that the function of literature must be societal in nature and must serve the moral and social purpose of providing its readers with an insight into their …

Classroom And Private Environmental Behavior Of Iowa Vocational Home Economics Teachers, Ella S. Jedlicka Jan 1977

Classroom And Private Environmental Behavior Of Iowa Vocational Home Economics Teachers, Ella S. Jedlicka

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study, which combines aspects of both descriptive and correlational research, has four purposes. The purposes were to 1) discover which of a selected group of environmental concepts are being regularly included in the Iowa Vocational Home Economics curriculum, 2) describe possible differences in personal and classroom environmental attitudes and behavior and 3) describe possible differences between home economics teachers who include environmental concepts in their curricula and those who do not. From the fourth purpose four null hypotheses were developed concerning the relationship between number of concepts included in the curricula and 1) personal variables , 2) self-rating on …
