An Annotated Bibliography Of High Interest - Low Vocabulary Multimedia Materials For Junior High Students, Nancy Grimes Jan 1975

An Annotated Bibliography Of High Interest - Low Vocabulary Multimedia Materials For Junior High Students, Nancy Grimes

Graduate Research Papers

Two major areas of concern to the adolescent are behavior and emotions. They are interested in learning about genuine emotions and how people feel when they behave in certain ways. They also are concerned about the real world and seek to understand their own emotions, behaviors and life. Materials that provide for these particular interests will be appealing to the adolescent reader. Again, media specialists should be aware of any existing materials that deal with these concerns for possible purchase.

A Selected Bibliography Of Methods And Materials For Teaching Creative Writing, Linda R. Groen Jan 1975

A Selected Bibliography Of Methods And Materials For Teaching Creative Writing, Linda R. Groen

Graduate Research Papers

Creative writing can be seen, then, as an integral part of the curriculum, and the need to investigate it is readily apparent. The nature of the material available on creative writing necessitated that the investigation be handled in a somewhat different manner from that of the usual research project. Although a great deal has been written about creative writing, the emphasis has been on techniques, rationalities, and ideas. Few research studies have been conducted on the need for or design of creative writing programs. For this reason, and from comments made by authors such as Ms. Mueller, the author has …

The Vertebrate Fauna Of The Cayler Prairie Preserve, Dickinson County, Iowa, William J. Platt Jan 1975

The Vertebrate Fauna Of The Cayler Prairie Preserve, Dickinson County, Iowa, William J. Platt

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The vertebrate fauna of the Cayler Prairie Preserve, Dickinson County, Iowa, has been compiled from field observations and study between 1971 and 1974. Seventy-two species, including four amphibians, seven reptiles, 35 birds, and 26 mammals, were recorded. The diverse fauna results from the variety of habitats contained in the preserve, as well as the size of the preserve. One key member of the fauna is the badger (Taxidea taxus), which creates microhabitats favorable for small vertebrates while digging for ground squirrels. Few adventive vertebrates have successfully invaded the prairie, and the fauna represents a sizable fragment (larger vertebrates are absent) …

Assessing Laboratory Instruction In Biology, Melton E. Golmon Jan 1975

Assessing Laboratory Instruction In Biology, Melton E. Golmon

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Biology curriculum developments of the last decade have emphasized the importance of laboratory instruction in the learning environment. Not only do most students enjoy laboratory work but it provides them with an opportunity to make first hand observations, manipulate equipment, collect data, organize data, and draw their own conclusions concerning this information. One teaching strategy for laboratory instruction developed by the Biological Sciences Curriculum Study (BSCS) creates a setting in which a question can be formulated that may be answered as a result of laboratory work. Special instruction is given for specific laboratory techniques and skills when necessary but major …

Algae And Energy, James J. Hungerford Jan 1975

Algae And Energy, James J. Hungerford

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The extent to which algae contribute to human welfare is often forgotten, ignored or unappreciated. Many types of algae serve as bases in commercially prepared foods and condiments. Algal products are used in cosmetics, textiles, pharmaceuticals and paints. In Asia, algae are often mixed and served with rice and fish to supplement the human diet. In coastal areas of the world, kelps are often chopped as food for livestock. The alga Poryphyra is cultivated in Japan to supply a 65 million pound annual market.

Specifically, the researcher attempted to answer the question: What subjects, ideas, treatments of subject matter, or isolated incidents portrayed in children's picture books and fiction have raised objections from school faculty members, parents, or any other individuals or organized groups in a community within the last ten years?

A Survey Of Classical Rhetoric From Hermogenes To Bernard, Matthew C. Morrison Jan 1975

A Survey Of Classical Rhetoric From Hermogenes To Bernard, Matthew C. Morrison

Iowa Journal of Communication

At the time of Quintilian's death in c. 97 the Graeco-Latin culture of the Roman Empire still thirsted for the intellectual and artistic traditions of its great past, "but the stream was running low, and its current was becoming progressively more feeble." A century of stagnation came close on the heels of Quintilian's passing, and following it a sharp decline. Literature suffered at the hands of showy ''Asianism," and of the arts only architecture produced anything of timeless quality. Science and philosophy lingered a little longer, but, before the accession of Diocletian in 284 A.D., they too had wilted before …

The History Of Plant Ecology In Iowa As Reflected In The Proceedings Of The Iowa Academy Of Science, A. G. Van Der Valk Jan 1975

The History Of Plant Ecology In Iowa As Reflected In The Proceedings Of The Iowa Academy Of Science, A. G. Van Der Valk

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

All plant ecology papers published in the Proceedings from 1887 to 1973 were identified. On the average only 1.4 papers were published per year. An examination of the number of papers published in successive five-year intervals indicates that there were three distinct periods in the history of plant ecology in Iowa with three individuals dominating each period: 1887-1931 - L. H. Pammel, B. Shimek, and Ada Hayden; 1932-1951 - H. S. Conard, J. M. Aikman, and Ada Hayden; 1952-1971 - J. M. Aikman, R. F. Thorne, and R. Q. Landers. There have been very few active plant ecologists in Iowa, …

Portrayals Of Blacks By Authors And Illustrators Of Children's Literature And How Their Literature Affects Children's Attitudes, Diane Amdahl Jan 1975

Portrayals Of Blacks By Authors And Illustrators Of Children's Literature And How Their Literature Affects Children's Attitudes, Diane Amdahl

Graduate Research Papers

Children associate with each other every day. They work, play, and have fun together in school church, organizations, recreation, etc. For many children much of this association is limited to others of their own race. How, then, do they learn to accept others of different races? How do they learn to work, play, and have fun with these children? Integration has forced the association of white children with black children, but this does not always bring acceptance, and acceptance is the beginning of a total relationship.

It is the intent of this paper to show how children's literature can promote …

History Of The Zoology Section Of The Iowa Academy Of Science, Paul Meglitsch Jan 1975

History Of The Zoology Section Of The Iowa Academy Of Science, Paul Meglitsch

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

During the early years, all papers presented at the annual meetings of the Iowa Academy of Science were delivered at general session. Evidently a number of members felt that they would be better able to discuss and appreciate the papers if they were given at sectional meetings. This had the further advantage of permitting the inclusion of more papers in the program. Professor L. S. Ross, then secretary of the Academy, suggested in 1914 that papers be given at sectional meetings. In 1916 this was done for the first time.

As one of the original sections, the Zoology Section has …

Blood Parasites From Birds Of The Lake Okoboji Region, Iowa, John N. Farmer, David H. Vesole

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Hematozoa are reported from 171 birds, representing 7 orders of 20 families and 33 species, all collected in Dickinson County, northwest Iowa, with the majority of animals being collected at the Iowa Lakeside Laboratory, Milford, Iowa. Blood parasites were observed in 67 birds (39.2%), with an incidence as follows: Haemoproteus sp., 45 (26.3%); Leucocytozoon sp., 19 (11.1%); Plasmodium sp., 4 (2.3%); Trypanosoma 3 (1.7%); and microfilariae, 29 (16.9%). An evaluation of these results indicates a dramatic decrease in the incidence of blood parasites later in the summer. The presence of parasites early in the spring is considered to be a …

Seeing Sound, Sondra Waltz Jan 1975

Seeing Sound, Sondra Waltz

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Making sound visible is a useful activity in teaching students the concepts that sound is caused by vibrating objects and that different sounds are caused by different types of vibration. This particular activity makes it possible to see the sounds produced by observing a vibrating, metal plate. As the plate produces sound it vibrates violently in some areas and not at all in other regions. If a small amount of very fine sand or poppy seed is sprinkled on the plate as it vibrates, the seeds will move to areas where vibration is minimal and form distinct distributional patterns on …

Food From Newspaper

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Cellulose is the most abundant organic material which can be used as a source of food, fuel and chemicals. The net world-wide production of cellulose is estimated at one hundred billion tons per year. This is approximately 150 lbs. of cellulose per day for each and every one of the earth's 3.9 billion people. The energy to produce this vast quantity of cellulose comes from the sun and is fixed by photosynthesis.

The Development Of Archeology In Iowa: An Overview, Duane C. Anderson Jan 1975

The Development Of Archeology In Iowa: An Overview, Duane C. Anderson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This paper traces the development of archeology in Iowa through three distinct periods. Workers during the period of Pioneer Investigations, 1870-1920, were preoccupied with the problem of the identity of the "Mound Builders." Through their activities they stimulated public awareness and interest and fostered the growth of scientific investigations. During the Keyes-Orr Period, 1921- 1950, Charles R. Keyes and his associates, working through the Iowa Archeological Survey, amassed a sizable amount of data and named various archeological cultures across the state. By the close of the Keyes-Orr Period, archeology emerged as a respected, disciplined and important pursuit in Iowa. The …

Introduction To A New Series Of Studies Of Ordovician Echinoderms, H. L. Strimple

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A massive collection of Ordovician echinoderms has been accumulated primarily from northeastern Iowa and southeastern Minnesota but including material from other states; it is in process of being studied. A brief history of the inception of the study and the process of bringing the material together is presented. Individuals are named but only brief details are given. Primarily this is a report of a concentrated effort to produce a significant study of echinoderms from Middle and Upper Ordovician strata, the people involved and the methods of obtaining material.

Recurrent Community Patterns In Epeiric Seas: The Lower Silurian Of Eastern Iowa, Markes E. Johnson Jan 1975

Recurrent Community Patterns In Epeiric Seas: The Lower Silurian Of Eastern Iowa, Markes E. Johnson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In eastern Iowa, the Llandovery Series (Lower Silurian) consists of the Edgewood and Kankakee formations as well as much of the Hopkinton Dolomite. Outcrops of these rocks provide fossil assemblages of marine benthic invertebrates well suited for reconstructing epeiric sea communities. Results of preliminary field studies in Dubuque, Jackson. Jones, and Delaware counties indicate that an initial Lingula Community at the base of the section is succeeded by recurrent patterns of Coral, Pentamerid, and Stricklandid communities. The patterns are interpreted as community response to fluctuations in sea level, estimated to vary between a few and 60 m. At least two …

An Abstract Of A Creative Film Project (Words Tell A Story), Adele Harms Jan 1975

An Abstract Of A Creative Film Project (Words Tell A Story), Adele Harms

Graduate Research Papers

When an author creates his medium is words, when a composer creates his medium is music, when a sculptor works he employs clay or stone. Film, used as a creative medium is one of the least limiting tools available to express originality of ideas. It can actually encompass all other forms of creativity by projecting them on a screen. By adding sound to the film words can be used in an effective form. For these reasons, film can be an exciting creative format.

Perhaps the biggest advantage of film is that it shows motion. It does not have to "suggest" …

The Effects Of A Performance-Based Training Program On Subsequent Teacher Effectiveness As Rated By School Principals, Joel Christian Ortéga

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Introduction. The Performance-Based Teacher Education movement is attracting an increasing number of followers. Although there are many concerns yet to be revised, the potential advantages render this one of the most promising educational movements of recent times. Since the movement is somewhat in its beginning stages, the major impact of this type of program is yet to be determined.

Problem. Many teacher education institutions, recognizing the problems that are in the traditional approaches to teacher education, have already begun to study and change their programs and courses toward a Performance-Based Teacher Education program. This being a relatively new approach to …

Na Tse Ke: A Re-Evaluation Of Some Major Trends In United States Apache Policy, 1847-1887, D. C. Cole

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The relationship of the United States Government and the Apache Indians of Arizona and New Mexico was marred by thirty years of war. The thesis, of which this is an abstract, is an investigation into the appropriateness of selected aspects of United States policy toward the Apache in the years 1847-1887. The essential questions in this analysis and re-evaluation of policy are not why and how? did the United States prevail, but rather: Did the authorities understand the nature of the Apache? Did the policies in the area fit that nature? And if not, could the cost have been less …

Technology Transfer: The Adoption Of Gobar Gas Generators By Subsistence Farmers In Puebla, Mexico, Robert E. Meyer Jan 1975

Technology Transfer: The Adoption Of Gobar Gas Generators By Subsistence Farmers In Puebla, Mexico, Robert E. Meyer

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

One of the significant characteristics of modern American agriculture is its rapidly changing technology. New practices and techniques are constantly being developed by research agencies. Society benefits from these research findings only to the extent that they are diffused to and used by farmers.

One of the important problems inherent in a rapidly changing economy is that of effectively communicating scientific information to the potential user of that information. Much research has been done in recent years to determine the nature of the process by which new ideas and practices are diffused from their source of origin and ultimately implemented. …
