Necklace Radio Transmitter Attachment For Pheasants, Terry Z. Riley, Bruce A. Fistler
Necklace Radio Transmitter Attachment For Pheasants, Terry Z. Riley, Bruce A. Fistler
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
We tested a pre-assembled, necklace-radio-transmitter-attachment design on female ring-necked pheasants (Phasianus colchicus) in northern Iowa. Birds were captured by nightlighting and bait trapping between September 1989 and March 1990. Radio transmitters were attached to 128 using a wire necklace. Two birds had problems adapting to the necklace, and 3 birds removed them. Twenty-three birds were still alive and wearing necklaces at the end of the study, for an average of 318 (SD= ± 52) days. Ease of attachment, long durability, light weight, and minimal bulk make the necklace an effective alternative to harness and poncho mounts.

Natural History In Iowa: The Early Phases, David C. Glenn-Lewin, Thomas R. Rosburg
Natural History In Iowa: The Early Phases, David C. Glenn-Lewin, Thomas R. Rosburg
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
Natural history in Iowa prior to the 20th Century can be conveniently arranged into 4 phases: Native American, before the Louisiana Purchase, between the Louisiana Purchase and about 1850, and after 1850. Native American natural history was extensive and had a distinctly spiritual character. Natural history was a component of European exploration up to the time of the Louisiana Purchase, but was not treated as a separate endeavor; the evidence from this period comes from the journals and diaries of early exploreres, fur traders and the like. Between the Louisiana Purchase and about 1850, natural history changed from its status …
History Of Mammal Study In Iowa, John B. Bowles
History Of Mammal Study In Iowa, John B. Bowles
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
The first records of mammals in Iowa were from explorers, survey parties heading westward and early seeders. Generation of checklists of state mammals began in 1840 and culminated with the annotated list by Scott (1937) and biogeographic analysis by Bowles (1975). Recent focus has been on rare species status and mammalian ecology, e.g., Loess Hills, riparian habitat, agricultural practices, and reestablished grasslands.
Aspects Of Air Pollution, And Its Effect On The Respiratory System, Jennifer Randall
Aspects Of Air Pollution, And Its Effect On The Respiratory System, Jennifer Randall
Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)
This report centers around one of today's most prominent environmental issues-- air pollution. First, the major pollutants are defined and explained. Chloroflourocarbons, ozone, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, methane, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and suspended particulate matter all receive attention.
Next, air pollution's effect on the Earth is explained. The "greenhouse effect", global warming, acid rain, and ozone depletion all have an enormous impact on Earth's climate and atmosphere.
The report proceeds on to discuss options for controlling and so lving the air pollution problem. Se+ective catalytic reduction, noncatalytic reduction, tradeable permits-- these three processes are examples of large scale attempts …

Story Retelling With At-Risk Children, Evelyn R. Jante
Story Retelling With At-Risk Children, Evelyn R. Jante
Graduate Research Papers
Story retelling is a powerful learning experience for children in the classroom. It provides opportunities for them to engage in the thinking-language processes thus extending their abilities. When retelling a story, children create their own construct from a story they have listened to or read. Retellings are also useful as a source of information for teachers. When used for assessment, teachers can observe children while engaged in the process of retelling to understand their sense of story.
Religious And Spiritual Elements In Young Adult Literature: A Content Analysis, Patricia C. Rosenberg
Religious And Spiritual Elements In Young Adult Literature: A Content Analysis, Patricia C. Rosenberg
Graduate Research Papers
The purpose of this study was to use content analysis to focus on the nature of traditional religious and spiritual elements in young adult fiction books.
Thirty-two books from ALA/s "Best of the Best Books 1966-1986" were read, and eight religious contexfs were checked. The findings revealed over one half of the books included moderate traditional religious contexts. About three fourths of the religious contexts were positive, but over one half of them were also negative. Most of the negatives were applied to religious workers and participants in religion. The one book which had strong religious context was totally negative. …

Extending The Literature Base Of A Language Arts Classroom Using The Theme Of Survival, Mary A. Rosburg
Extending The Literature Base Of A Language Arts Classroom Using The Theme Of Survival, Mary A. Rosburg
Graduate Research Papers
The general public in the United States recently has expressed much concern about low literacy levels. Many Americans have not developed language abilities that afford successful functioning as adults. Current data support this concern : Approximately one out of ten adults cannot read well enough to fill out tax forms, read a menu, or heed warning labels on medicine bottles. Surveys suggest that at least 50 percent of the unemployed lack basic reading and writing skills to secure a job (Cornett, Blankenship, 1990).

A Chaotic Approach To Free Will And Determinism, Gregory J. Till
A Chaotic Approach To Free Will And Determinism, Gregory J. Till
Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)
This paper approaches this ancient problem by incorporating the new science of chaos. Chaos is the name given to the discovery that even "simple deterministic systems with only a few elements can generate random behavior" {Crutchfield et al., 46). Chaos shows that deterministic systems can act in ways which are not predictable while at the same time showing that many seemingly random phenomena are more explainable than once thought. By doing so, chaos alters the laws of causation upon which much of this debate rests and indicates that perhaps not all theory is against freedom of the will, despite Dr. …

Time Of Day Effects On Achievement, Peggy Rick
Time Of Day Effects On Achievement, Peggy Rick
Graduate Research Papers
The path of the educational process more closely resembles the flight of a butterfly than the flight of a bullet (Jackson, 1968). In the specific context of classroom teaching, this has been due in part to the differing conceptions of definitions of "good" teaching. In the earlier part of this century it was generally felt that teaching was an art, the belief being that "a little learning and a way with children sufficed for the teacher" (Bennett, 1917). Later this conception was strongly contested by proponents of the view that teaching was a science, the belief being that a development …
Methods For The Teaching Of Science In Grades K-8: A Case For The Constructivist Model And The Science Technology Society (Sts) Approach, Gary Sitter
Graduate Research Papers
Considerable research information on science education and/or science methodology cited by the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA), the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and other researchers (Harms and Yager, 1981; Hurd, 1986; Malecki, 1990; Mitchener and Anderson, 1989) emphasizes a crisis in science education. A majority of those with a special interest in improving science learning feel something must be done to improve the quality of science instruction that students receive. Furthermore, many offer suggestions as to what that something should be (Aldridge, 1991; Blunck and Yager, 1990; Malecki, 1990; Penick, 1986; Stefanich, 1991; Stronck, 1986; Yager, …

Multimedia And Its Effects On Different Cognitive Styles In The Mathematics Classroom, Richard G. Strike
Graduate Research Papers
Technology has provided the education world with 3 many tools to present information. Multimedia is the latest tool. Multimedia in itself is not a new concept. In the past, teachers and students have used multiple forms of media to create projects such as filmstrips, tape recordings and videos. "Today, the computer has become the conductor of the multimedia orchestra" (Epstein, 1990, p. 40).

With the advent of the printing press, and later the radio and television, the public relies heavily on the words of others to give them information. Each day people receive news, whether it is read in the newspaper, heard on radio, or seen on television. The companies that run the newspapers, radio and television stations, and magazines hire individuals that are deemed to have good written and verbal skills. These individuals are trained to communicate articles that are clear, concise, and informative so that the readers, listeners, and viewers get all the important news in the shortest time possible.
Developmental Fears Of Elementary Children: A Review Of The Literature, Melinda K. Smoldt
Developmental Fears Of Elementary Children: A Review Of The Literature, Melinda K. Smoldt
Graduate Research Papers
It has been estimated that clinical treatment for fear-related disorders has been sought for between 4 and 8% of the children in the United States. It is hypothesized that twice as many children who are potential patients remain untreated (Morris & Kratochwill, 1983). Further, the effects of fear may carry over into school and affect academic work (Robinson, Rotter, Fey, & Robinson, 1991; Robinson, Robinson, & Whetsell, 1988). Fear may range from that which serves to enhance positive self preservation to that which has an inhibiting or debilitating affect on children (Robinson et al., 1988).

Promoting Children's Oral Language Development Through Story Retelling, Kathy M. Meyer
Promoting Children's Oral Language Development Through Story Retelling, Kathy M. Meyer
Graduate Research Papers
Meaningful language experiences offered to children at a young age nurture their emerging literacy. These experiences encourage children to be active participants in the language processes (Bredekamp, 1987). Their involvement in the language processes can be greatly enhanced through a quality literature base (Strickland & Morrow, 1989b). One type of literature-based experience that facilitates children 1 s emerging language abilities is the oral retelling of stories that they have heard or read (Magee & Sutton-Smith, 1983). Retellings resemble a long-established form of behavior called 11 telling about 11 (Brown & Cambourne, 1987). Telling about something that has happened is a …
Educating Baby: Preparing Children For Future School Success, Jill R. Bergman
Educating Baby: Preparing Children For Future School Success, Jill R. Bergman
Graduate Research Papers
Parents generally are their children's first teachers. Children learn more in their first five years than at any other five year time period in their life. Ninety percent of all requisite intellectual skills are learned by children before they enter school (Disibio, 1984). "Some researchers suggest that maternal socialization, and teaching patterns in particular, are strong predictors of later intellectual and cognitive performances" (Moreno, 1991, p. 395). Therefore, parents play extremely important parts in the education of their children.
Distance Education: The Re-Emergence Of The Telecourse, Sarah Hanuske
Distance Education: The Re-Emergence Of The Telecourse, Sarah Hanuske
Graduate Research Papers
The year 2000 is expected to have a fifty percent increase in total world population over 1970 (Clarke, 1974). Most of the growth is occurring in developing nations. Even though the rate of growth is less dramatic in developed countries, the social implications are just as important. The expanding numbers of school children, university and vocational-technical students, and others seeking additional training and education are straining the resources of existing traditional educational structures everywhere.

A Comparison Of The Performance Of African American Preschool Children On The Wppsi And Wppsi-R, Cynthia A. Vandervelde
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence (WPPSI) (Wechsler, 1967) has long been one of the most widely used instruments for the assessment of preschool children's intelligence. The recently published Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence Revised (WPPSI-R) (Wechsler, 1989) was designed to replace the WPPSI as the instrument of choice for the purposes of making classification, placement, and program evaluation decisions. Thus, data concerning the comparability of the two instruments is of particular importance to educators. This study investigated the relationship between the WPPSI and the WPPSI-R among a sample of predominantly lower socioeconomic status African American …
