Implications Of Teacher In-Service Training On Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Identification, Glenn Evan Haupt

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study examined the impact of teacher in-service training on the ability of teachers to identify children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in their classrooms. The subjects were 16 teachers from two small rural midwestern schools. All but one of the teachers were females, with a range in years of teaching experience from five through 30 years.

The intent of the study was to investigate if an ADHD in-service training program would have a beneficial effect on the ability of teachers to identify students in their classrooms with behaviors characteristic of ADHD. The subjects were split into two groups, …

Mechanistic Studies On The Preparation Of The Hantzsch’S Base From Ethyl Acetoacetate And Chloromethylmethyl Ether, Huo-Jin Hsieh Jan 1993

Mechanistic Studies On The Preparation Of The Hantzsch’S Base From Ethyl Acetoacetate And Chloromethylmethyl Ether, Huo-Jin Hsieh

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Dihydropyridines, which were first studied by Hantzsch in 1882, now bear his name. A new synthesis of Hantzsch 's base, 2,6-dimethyl-3,5-dicarboethoxy-l ,4- dihydropyridine (lb), was discovered. The preparation of Hantzsch's base (lb) from new starting materials, ethyl acetoacetate (3) and chloromethylmethyl ether (4), was described. Ethyl acetoacetate was reacted with sodium amide in liquid ammonia followed by chloromethylmethyl ether to form the 2,6-dimethyl-3,5-dicarboethoxy1,4-dihydropyridine (lb) in 84% overall yield. Compound (lb) was further identified by its oxidation to the corresponding pyridine, 2,6-dimethyl-3,5-dicarboethoxypyridine ( 11 b) by glacial acetic acid. A mechanism for the formation of the compound ( 1 b) was …

Connexin Expression During Heart Development In The Chick Embryo, Lisa Jo Jensen Jan 1993

Connexin Expression During Heart Development In The Chick Embryo, Lisa Jo Jensen

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Gap junctions are thought to be important during development because they interconnect cells for communication via signaling molecules. In the developmental process, the heart is coupled via gap junctions. The heart has many migratory, proliferative, and differentiation events in which gap junctions may serve a central role in development. The goal of this study was to measure the connexin levels throughout selected stages of cardiac development and to ascertain the normal connexin levels to use as comparisons in experimental systems such as microgravity. This study measured the amount of connexin protein in the embryonic heart at 1.5-, 2-, 3-, 4-, …

Graduate Recital In Voice, Nicolle Foland

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This recital was performed on March 30, 1993 and consisted of two arias and three sets of music. The following is an abstract of the music in the order of the program. 1 "Piangero la sorte mia" is a da capo aria which occurs in the third act of Giulio Cesare by Handel. With her troops defeated, herself captured and thrown into chains by her gloating enemy Tolomeo, and her lover reported dead, Cleopatra sings a lament. There is no one to help her and she bewails her fate, adding that her ghost will haunt Tolomeo. Handel chooses a major …

Graduate Recital, Svetlana Gabruk Jan 1993

Graduate Recital, Svetlana Gabruk

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The first group of pieces on the recital is a pair of sonatas, K.148 and K.149 by Domenico Scarlatti. Domenico Scarlatti wrote approximately 555 sonatas and composed 328 of them are in pairs. The sonatas in these pairs were intended to be performed together. He also composed groupings of 3 sonatas. Scarlatti used Italian terms such as "allegro," "presto," etc., for his sonatas, but they do not tell us much about tempo. The words are more indicative of the rhythmic character and mood of the pieces. Although D. Scarlatti was a great virtuoso, consideration in performing his music must include …

Verbal Rehearsal Methods And Their Effects On Expressive Music Performance: A Comparison Of Verbal Explanation And Transformational Verbal Imagery, Leonard M. Upham Jan 1993

Verbal Rehearsal Methods And Their Effects On Expressive Music Performance: A Comparison Of Verbal Explanation And Transformational Verbal Imagery, Leonard M. Upham

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study was to determine if use of transformational verbal imagery rehearsal methods, when compared to use of methods based on verbal explanation, resulted in (a) higher levels of expressive performance by wind quintets and (b) greater appreciation of the composition by quintet members.

The study used a posttest-only control-group design. Thirty high school brass and/or woodwind quintets were randomly assigned to experimental groups (n = 15) or control groups (n = 15). A composition rich in expressive aspects of music was used. Each quintet had three rehearsals. The first rehearsal dealt with the technical aspects of …

A Meeting Of Cultures: Faculty And Part-Time Doctoral Students In An Edd Program, Paul R. Smith

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study was to examine the cultural perspectives of the part-time doctoral students in educational administration and of selected faculty in the college of education at a medium sized middle western university. More specifically, the intent was to determine what types of cultures existed within these groups, the factors contributing to the development of these cultures, and what affect these factors had on the Ed.D. degree itself. A qualitative research approach was taken and included individual interviews, classroom observations, and university documents. Non-participant observations included five doctoral classes and related formal and informal conversations. The data gathering …

Lakeside Laboratory: A Unique Learning Opportunity For Science Teachers, John Stiles

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

In northwest Iowa, tucked away along the shores of West Lake Okoboji, is a unique biological research and teaching facility managed by the Iowa State Board of Regents. On a typical summer day, 60 or so researchers and students spend hours collecting data at a dozen sites in at least seven areas of research. Much of this activity goes unnoticed by the steady stream of vacationers driving or floating by who learn of this quiet place only by virtue of a wrong tum or an overheard conversation.

The Psychology Of Occultism & Ritual Abuse, Cindy D. Whitmer Jan 1992

The Psychology Of Occultism & Ritual Abuse, Cindy D. Whitmer

Graduate Research Papers

For years psychological literature has included cases and treatment implications for individuals affected by emotional, physical, and sexual abuse. Most recently, ritual abuse, a rather new topic in the mental health arena, has emerged, but unfortunately seems to be a problem that has been in existence a very long time. Some have said ritual abuse started with satanic worship dated as far back as 610 A.D. in Southeastern Europe (Daniels, 1989). Others disagreed, saying this form of worship did not appear until the Christian church was established (Kahaner, 1988), and that in the 19th century a new spiritualistic movement began …

A Preferred Vision For Administering Secondary Schools: A Reflective Essay, Besmellah Alekozai Jan 1992

A Preferred Vision For Administering Secondary Schools: A Reflective Essay, Besmellah Alekozai

Graduate Research Papers

With increasing concerns in education, attention has been focused on the roles and duties of the educational administrator, both in the operation of the schools and in the provision of that leadership. This is essential for maintaining the viability of public education in a dynamically changing society. The training of educational administrators has drastically changed, indicating a major shift in emphasis among those who assist to set the patterns of administration. Whereas the training of administrators previously emphasized the technological problems of school management, the new "movement" has stressed the values of administrative theory. The applications of the behavioral sciences …

Recent Trends In Hazing And Alternatives For Student Affairs Professionals, Joyce S. Morrow Jan 1992

Recent Trends In Hazing And Alternatives For Student Affairs Professionals, Joyce S. Morrow

Graduate Research Papers

The growth of fraternity and sorority membership on many campuses and the increase in the number of reported hazing-related deaths and accidents has brought hazing under public and university scrutiny. What was once considered a harmless rite of passage is seen increasingly as causing psychological and physical harm to our young adults.

Dance As A Cultural Element In Spain And Spanish America, Amy Lynn Wall Jan 1992

Dance As A Cultural Element In Spain And Spanish America, Amy Lynn Wall

Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)

Two years ago I had the opportunity to live and travel in Spain. Because I participate in and enjoy international dance, I sought to identify the Spanish culture through dance. Throughout my literature review I continued this identification process by looking at the history of Spain, the functions of dance in the society, the regional variations in dance and traditional costume, the dance of the Roman Catholic Church of Spain, and finally the influence Spain has had on dance in Spanish America.

The University Of Iowa Museum Of Natural History: An Historical Perspective, George D. Shrimper Jan 1992

The University Of Iowa Museum Of Natural History: An Historical Perspective, George D. Shrimper

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

The 132-year record of UIMNH essentially mirrors historical and on-going trends in related institutions. As scholarship grew in the natural sciences during the 19th century, natural history museums became centers for scientific research. A "Golden Age" of museum-based expeditionary work and taxonomic research was marked at UI by the careers of curator/naturalists Calvin, Nutting, Macbride, and Shimek. Systematic biology and paleontology thrived with the accumulation of extensive collections. De-emphasis of "natural history" studies followed after 1920-30 with a concomitant growth in cellular and molecular biology. In seeking new directions and financial support, many museums, including UIMNH, shifted emphasis to public …
